Title: Mac laptop help.
Post by: Obie303 on March 18, 2009, 05:47:23 PM
I purchased a Mac (OS X) laptop for my wife and she's asking me for help constantly.  I have no idea since all of my experience has been with Windows XP.  I'm looking for a helpful book (and please.....not "Mac for Dummies".) that can walk us through some of the basic operating issues.  Any suggestions?????

Thanks,
Obie

Well, Mac for dummies DOES work.

I have small experience on Macs from when we used them in school, but this was the old ones from 4-5 years ago.

What does she need to know?  I know a few things about Mac, but I'm more experienced with Windows like yourself

We're starting from scratch here.  This is our first Mac.  So far she loves it.  I'm just looking for basic help, i.e. how to watch a movie (is there a program similar to Windows Media Player).  I did purchase iWord for her.  That is the program for things like excel, powerpoint, etc. etc.

I really do need something tonight (in the next hour or so before Barnes & Nobel closes).  She's asking too many questions and it's frustrating that I can't help.

Thanks again,
Obie

Thanks.  This will help (I hope.)

Off to the book store now.  Any other Mac users out there, I could use some advice.  This was what we purchased;
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook?mco=NzUzNDUy (http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook?mco=NzUzNDUy)

It's the 2.0GHz with the aluminum body.  The rest is pretty much the standard basics.

Thanks again,
Obie

Well take the mac and throw it out the window.  Then buy a windows based laptop.  Mac users support COMMUINISM.  :rofl  Wish I could help you but i avoid macs like the plague.

I generally do, too.  But all the schools around here use nothing BUT macs, so I have to learn to use them.  Actually, I find some of their features easier to use than Windows.

Which features?

I think it's just me but all the appleworks stuff, but I guess that's because all my typing for papers and whatnot is on the Macs at school.  Been a while since I actually used them since I don't have English this semester, meaning no large papers that I can't do at home.

Ah okay.

I rarely use Macs.  I've heard many features from Macs eventually end up in the next generation of Windows.

When I was in school for Graphic Design, of course the main labs used iMacs.  They had just gotten some C2D iMacs to replace their old G4 setup.  I've give Apple the credit for having nice displays with excellent color.  Other than that, please lord give me a Windows Machine.  The iMacs had the stock keyboard and mouse (which for home users could be replaced) but that mouse was a horror.

Much hate for single buttons (I'll take my highly customizable Logitech G5 or any of the older series I had).  That trackball wheel was poor.  Not only did it feel like I had a wart on my finger when using it, but it was very inaccurate.  Zooming on a document was sometimes a pain.  I'd barely touch it and I was maxed zoomed in.  Try to zoom out with a good amount of touch and I'd go back 3 clicks.

And wow they had printer problems, though, I believed it was the printer/network themselves.  That's a whole nother story.

Anyways, I was not in favor of the networking scheme they had setup for school.  Granted, some files were large and you shouldn't save to your network drive directly.  But occassionally when u did save directly to the network drive, the application would crash and you'd lose a save.  So saving was always crucial..

Thankfull my profs where very kind and would let you go home during work time or sneak off to the video production lab that had Windows machines.  Though they were slower and had CRT's, much nicer.

Years past, the benefits of the GD on Macs was there.  But when I was in school, those benefits had all become myth and where still touted by some ill-informed souls and profs.

Why would I want to fork over Apple premium for hardware when I can build (or buy) my Windows machine for much less.  And security?  Please.  Educate yourself in online safety.  Don't be a moron.  As the Apple 'fad' continues, you'll see more security issues pop up as they are targeted more.

Now for the interface, that's user preference I've found.  But for what I do and for what apps are available, I'll stay with Windows thanks.

I just got my first Mac last fall ( MacBook Pro ), mainly because my XP laptop died and I simply refuse to do Vista.

Plus, a little inquisitive piece of me has really wondered what a Mac environment would be like... so I took the plunge.

Having 25 years of PC background, it was a little daunting at first.. but as I've gotten more familiar with it, I've become quite fond of it.  To the point that as my wife and daughter's computers expire, they will be replaced with Macs.

Here's a message forum that has a pretty good selection of help that you can search through:

Another thing amazes me is how cool the MacBook runs.  Almost no heat whatsoever.. not like the knee-scorcher my Gateway was.. sheesh.

Good luck!

I use both mac and windows.

What do you want to know obie?

For playing videos a good place to start is VLC. Its as good on macs as it is on winboxes.
For word, excel etc then go with either ms office for mac or do what i do.. openoffice for mac.
