I will be going to MEPS next thursday. I am trying to enlist in the national guard. My hearing is not so great, are there any tips/tricks that you gents have for passing the hearing test?

Just ask them to turn up the volume a bit so you can hear the test over the voices in your head. Worked for me!
-
Breath Gently,,,, your breathing will be so loud you will barely hear it... oh by the way, the timing it thing wont work..... :lol

lol don't do that! Just relax like dadsguns said, if your all up tight it will be hard to concentrate. What MOS did you sign for? I am going to meps in May for Active army as a infantrymen. good luck!
-
Oh and let's not forget "Drop your drawers, bend over and spread em."
-
Yep try to relax and breath easy during the test. I myself was wound so tight that they had to take my BP 4 times and avg. it.
-
The trick to calming yourself down is Lamaze. Seriously! if it works for millions of women in childbirth it will do wonders for you. Just get that breathing right. They will understand, its even taught in training!

I remember having to go through the rest of the physical in the little room with the old doc. I mean seriously the guy looked like he was 90. :rofl Not the best thing you want to hear that early in the morning though.

:rofl :rofl :rofl
Many years ago when I had to do that at the MEPS, I bent over, spread em, and looked through my legs back at the doc looking at my arse...... :rofl :rofl :rofl
Crack a smile when you look back at em, it might make his day.... :rofl
Wait till you get your physical from a hot female Doc,,,, now thats control.... :lol

Yup, Don't go with any extras like TP chunks or dingleberrys. If you really want to throw them off balance, let one rip just as you spread em! When you do just exclaim "I didn't know it was loaded!"

They didn't do that for my hearing test, maybe that is only for Ranger candidates, otherwise that guy really liked you! :D Thanks for your service guys.

Woohoo! Excellent choice of MOS. :salute Good luck and be prepared to sit and do nothing for very long periods of time at MEPS.

Yes. If you can go for a few days or more the better.
Keep in mind, this will only help with any temporary damage and not permanent damage you may have incurred.
On another note: Did any of you guys have to "straddle the water pipe" once you got to boot camp?
During the P-Days, they had us get naked, form a line, and walked/straddled a horizontal pipe that sprayed water through some holes upwards, I figured it may have been for de lousing and such or part of the break you down build you up phase.... ?
-
Wow just wow. :rofl Don't know if that served a purpose or if they were just sick and twisted. :devil

Don't remember that part but it sure sounds like fun! Did they make you put your hands on the shoulders of the guy in front of you? Like a conga line?
-
No, I don't recall it being THAT kind of fun... :lol you sure not dare laugh watching the guy in front of you duck running naked in front of you.... :lol
This was in Feb 1990 when I attended boot camp at Great Lakes, even after the usual "walk the line of shots" in both arms, a few days later they took us to another huge room, had everyone line the walls, they had everyone face the wall and drop your draws, hands on the wall looking away from the corpman and the cart full of injection syringes that looked like they were from a time long ago, they had the loops for your two fingers and thumb and were made of stainless steel, needle was Long and LARGE, they gave us 1 HUGE stainless syringes full of Amoxicillin I believe, I would have to find my shot record to confirm that, once you got that shot in your cheek you had to roll around on the golf ball size knot in your arse for 15 minutes working it into your tissue, and then we began a 4 hour march,,,,, the next morning guys that were on the top bunks that jumped down to the deck would collapse when they tried to put weight on that leg from being so sore.... maybe someone in the class had something that they didn't want everyone else to catch ? :uhoh

Ah the penicillin butt shot. Was bicillin at Benning, damn lying medics. Rub it so it doesn't knot up on you. My cheek was sore for 3 frickin' days.
-
Go to a pharmacists and get a good ear cleaning kit and use it a couple days before you go to MEPS. Also stay away from loud noises and loud music for a couple days also. Will help a lot.
-
I wouldn't try to game the tests. The tests are in place for a good reason. If your hearing doesn't make the grade, then c'est la vie.
Good luck!

lol penicillin aint nothing compared to the anthrax shot, that sucker hurts and you to get it 1 a year after the first year and like 4 times during the first year

its a 6 series shot, the once a year is the booster.
You should make sure you they enter that shot information or you will get them again. I ended up getting 2 more than I needed since they failed to enter the shot data.

Best was the lady giving the TB skin test. She was real nice, "if you squirt this back out at me. I will do it again and make it hurt this time." Hell she wasn't that gentle the first time.

Will there be an additional hearing test at basic? Just wondering, that is if I pass this one.

Just get really drunk the night before, take a handful of crunchy peanut butter and swipe between the cheeks of yer arse, when the Dr.'s ask you anything say "Huh?"
You'll look like chit, smell like watermelon and they won't care.....yer our boy!

You may or may not get a follow on exam while in basic, the one that you will take at the MEPS will be your baseline and used for comparison through your next few exams over the years ahead.
-
thanks dadsgun, I am really hoping to pass this first hearing test. with at least 2- barely 3 for the phules in hearing
-
If your under 21,- dont go to the local liquer store to have a cat buy ya some booze before ya ship out..........He got my 20.00 back in 1980.....july 6th...6:36 PM.......USMC next day. "Welcome to the big city country boy" were my thoughts......but I was 17 and knew most evrything.....i thought.
-
They give you a breathalyzer before you start on anything. Also hope you don't mind peeing while someone watches you.
-
I think that I will bomb out in the 5khz range, dont know if that is going to help me any. It probably will get me Disqualified.
-
I have to get a copy of a docters report from when i was ten. freakin mole. After i get a hold of that i will swear in.

Good luck, keep it quiet for the few days prior and wear some plugs. You should do fine. Let me know how you did.
I can remember when I flew into Chicago, got on that bus to Great Lakes, pulled up to the Processing building and the driver just had to say it with a chuckle, "Last chance boys, your life changes after you get off this bus, stay on the bus if you change your mind", about that time the door opened and the DI boarded the bus, stood straight and proper and said "Welcome to RTC Great Lakes, I am DI so and so, You will only respond with No Sir, or Yes Sir, when I say, you will step off this bus and you will stand on the corresponding markings, Do you understand!,,, yes sir,,, I cant hear you,,, YES SIR! NOW GET OFF THIS ^%^&*ING BUS, MOVE MOVE MOVE..... and it was on, your life was now being dictated by your someone else.
Dont be discouraged, you will learn many lessons from your experience. Enjoy it for what it is, and learn the lessons to be learned, your life and your buddies life will depend on it.

My recruiter bumped my meps dat up to monday and tuesday of next week. He told me that another guy wanted to go, but could not get today and tomorrow off.
-
Good, that gives you plenty of time to be ready.
-
This sucks, I was all set to go today, but when I called my recruiter up to find out what documents that I needed to take. He told me that I could not go, because MEPS in AL had to send something to the MEPS in pittsburgh. This really sucks, because I took the day off from work and tomorrow off too so I will be losing money on my paycheck.

Get used to it, the military if full of the "Hurry up and wait" mentality. Call up your work and see if you can go in.
