Title: AH won't boot
Post by: Rollins on March 20, 2009, 09:05:53 PM
OK, nothing's changed since I last logged on a few days back. But I just attempted to bring up AH several times and got a white screen with a small error box displaying:

Initialization failure at -4
Joystick not recognized -2

This is with or without the stick plugged in.

Any ideas? I'm lost.

Try installing AH in a new folder, without any mods, and see if it runs?

Dump your cashe folder

I'm sorry, what do you mean? I'm not trying to be obtuse, but I really do not understand that.

In the AH folder there is a folder called "cache" folder. Delete that folder and then try to start the game. It will automatically rebuild that fold and may solve your problem.

Have you had any trouble with your sound card? If your sound card crapped out you will get an error much like that, the game MUST have a sound card to load up.

Well, thanks for the advice, but none of this has worked. I get the same error.  No problems with the sound card as far as I can tell.  Hopefully I can get through on Monday and figure it out.

Run DXDIAG and chack the Display and Sound tabs to make sure the native drivers for those devices are actually loaded.  If there is no "Sound" tab, then the sound card is missing.  If there is a Sound tab but it has a generic name for the device, the native sound card drivers are not loaded.

Email the DXDIAG output to me if you are having trouble understanding it.

Will try that, thank you.
