Title: Time Warner Cable in same boat as AT&T and Sprint?
Post by: Enduro on March 22, 2009, 10:30:28 AM
Skuzzy,

I noticed your latest thread to AT&T and Sprint customers.  A lot of those traces look like mine.  Do you think there is any relation to my issue as a Time Warner subscriber?

Looks like another Level3 nightmare to me.

Not really.  Comcast and Sprint have dropped Level3 for thier Internet provider and went with Savvis.  Level3 is just like that.  A very oversold network.  Packet loss is to be expected.  The reason they were used by any of the ISP's is they are cheap.

I'll do a traceback when I get to work and add it to your post.  You need to complain to your ISP's Tier 2 (or higher) support.

I'm curious as to how it's not them? No, I'm not disputing your unique ability to sniff the culprit, it's simply odd to hear you say it's not their fault. The PP output makes it too obvious that it's Level3's fault as the packet loss on his PP output occurred at gateways between the Level3 networks.

I did not see your post Denhholm.  I was answering the OP's original question.

Oops, sorry. I continually forget to analyze most of the possibilities in a response. :D

I emailed Skuzzy this info yesterday and shared it with my squad.  These 5 tweaks directly to my network card made a HUGE improvement for me.  I see about 5% of the warping that I used to see, and so far -- fortunately -- no one is reporting that I'm warping.  Before these tweaks, I was told that I was warping BIG TIME.

I hope it helps others...

Note that I'm using Vista Home Premium SP1 (64-bit); so, the settings might have a slightly different name on your PC.  These are from my notes:

---------------------------------------

Instructions to adjust NIC settings:

Key points:

>>Please try disabling the Checksum Offload option.

   1. I changed IPv4 Checksum Offload from "Rx & Tx Enabled" to "Disabled"
   2. I changed TCP Checksum Offload (IPv4) from "Rx & Tx Enabled" to "Disabled"
   3. I changed UDP Checksum Offload (IPv4) from "Rx & Tx Enabled" to "Disabled"

>>You may also have a Speed/Duplex option on the Advanced tab. If you do, please try changing this to Force Base 100 Full Duplex.

   1. I changed Speed & Duplex from "Auto Negotiation" to "100 Mbps Full Duplex"

>>If you have a Power Management tab in your network card properties, click it and unselect the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" if selected.

Good luck!
