Title: Need some help with my car
Post by: MjTalon on March 25, 2009, 11:21:02 AM
Alright. I have a 93 Chevy Cavalier Z24 3.1L. It was my old car and now I'm back to driving it as my daily one. I'm looking to kit it out with the following:

New Gauges
New Dash Panels ( headlight switch, gauge light switch, etc )
New Interior
Hood Symbol ( the Chevy hood symbol came off )

Anyone happen to have any good sources where i can purchase the following things for it? I have some pics of it below:

I think you should keep the termite infested arm rest as a souvenir.

The major problem on any mods will be that the cav was an entry level car.  With that being said, I would contact some of the local chop/rebuild shops in your area for suggestions on availability of mods to work with. :rock

What's wrong with the dash and gauges? What are you trying to do? Transform ur mom's car to be included in the next "Fast & Furious" movie? ... or just stock replacement?

Pssssst....why are the Windshield wipers upside down?? You do realize that just one misapplication of the Wiper Sw. will result in a really nice gouge in the glass.  If your trying to preserve the wiper blades, use some 5/8 foam tubular pipe insulation cut to the proper length, and slipped over the blades.

The wipers were upside down as i was washing it sir.  :o They are properly down now.  :D

Frenchy: Some of my gauges are faulty. My Fuel gauge jumps left and right when I mash the peddle or gently cruising. That being said when i turn the car on it reads a full tank, and when I'm drivin it reads less than 25%

Now i'm not trying to turn it into no Fast & Furious car although that would be good.  :lol I'm just trying to get her up to speed with some different appeal as this was my sisters old car.  :P Just would like to have everything either replaced, fixed, or updated.

Gas gauge is more than likely the sending unit in the tank and not the gauge.  I've had so many cars with bad sending units (and speedometers) that I've just gotten used to it over the years.

Hardly worth the $ or time to fix.  You just need to "know" when to fill up.

My first car was an '84 Cavalier hand-me-down...ugliest thing you've ever seen.  I drove it into the ground and it ended up in a scrap heap. :lol

Well since i haven't been driving long and this is my first car, i doubt I have the experience to "know" when to fill up.  :D

Is that the name of the part? Sending unit to the tank?

I would look into AutoMeter gauges.   They should have everything you'd need.

The sending unit is probably shot in your Cav.   Before you replace it, drive a lot of that gas out of the tank (if you choose to fix it).

DOn't forget to scroll Ebay, but be cautious. The fuel needle bouncing might be ur sending unit more than the gauge, as someone said. Also, local pick a part and junkyard. You pay $1 to get in, bring your tools. If u never did it, you'll enjoy it, go there on a saturday and see if they have ur bucket. You can even practice taking stuff off a similar car so you don't destroy yours, like pulling a dash out  :aok

be very careful when changing the sending unit, your gas tank will be open (explosive fumes) no smoking, no sparks, no incandescent drop lights, you break the bulb you and the car will be a ball of fire.

Fill up your tank.  Note the mileage on the odometer, or if you have a trip odometer, set it to zero.  Drive.  When you run out of gas note the odometer again.  Subtract reading #2 from reading #1.  That's how far you can go on one tank of gas.  In the future be sure to fill up before driving that far.

The sending unit is inside your gas tank.

It probably has a bad float causing it to sink more than it should and taking longer than it should to return to the proper position.
