So today one of my squad leaders had a talk with my platoon, he told us about the things going on in North Korea and that hes actually worried(really not expecting him to be worried about anything seeing hes a Ranger hard guy) and it made me alil nervous. I watch the news so I understand whats going on but Im really not sure whats going to happen and thats kinda the nerve-racking part. I know NK says they are going to launch a satellite and Japan says they will shoot it down. I just don't see NK doing this with the economic crisis they are having, they have no resources to run a war but they definitely got strong allies. This could really explode very soon, what are your thoughts about this situation?
-
Hopefully it stayes calm and you wont have to do any shooting. Imo NK is just huffing and puffing abit but should anything happen they will lose to you guys. Most of their gear is outdated but i guess you already know that.
What i do find rather scary is that from what i have heard the NK has a huge ammount of heavy artillery that can hit major populated areas (Seoul) really bad.
-
This combined with the fact that the North has two American citizens in custody makes me a little nervous. But like Nilsen said, they seem to like to do a lot of huffing and puffing so who knows.

What worries me is whether America and the rest of the world are really ready to fight a war if it should come to that. NK is not the insurgency we are fighting now. This may turn into a large, conventional war, and do the humanitarians of the world have the stones to watch bombing and artillery on the necessary scale unfold? This is no longer Asymmetric Warfare. That MOAB may come in real handy...

If anything happens it will be over in a few days or maybe weeks followed by another 50 years or so of cease fire. By the time anyone else got to the area it will be over anyway. Neither the north or the south has what it takes to finally win the war and settle things for good.

Junky here is my take on it . Kim Il Jomg is not all there never has been and never will be . PRK is scary as hell because there is so much we don't know about them , how they work , or what they will do . I don't know exactly when you were last on the Malone ranges but I suspect your memories of Sand Hill and Victory drive are fairly fresh . I aint saying what you are doing is safe or easy. In alot of ways you are a hostage there , I Corps is fairly weak formation these days . However there are some things going your way . The biggest difference is the ROK Armed Forces . What was there in 1950's was weak ill equipped , untrained forces drawn from peasants . That ain't so today . The ROK's are tough well equipped , well led , motivated little SOB's .They aren't going to want to see what their gradfathers , fathers and themselves built get pissed away , and turned into the workers paradise , with the bountiful life they are living up north , heh . They will fight like demons you can count on that . Second is the state of the PRK Army . It is crewed by men whose family's go hungry alot . Sure they got alot of gear but how well trained you think they are ? If you aint got fuel to drive that tank , and the blammo to take it to the range , you aint gonna be a real tough army , I don't give a crap about how much of it you got . I remember a lil party I went to called desert shield , Desert Storm . The bad guys there had a ton of stuff but they could not shoot move and communicate worth a damn , never could do all three at the same time , I bet you can . As one of your brothers of the BLUE CORD you better still be able to hero ! Bro its like this when you train train hard , when you maintain treat yer stuff like your life depends on it being serviceable . When it time to play go drink some soju ( I called it GODU cuz I would go do anything after a liter of it ) and do some of the crap young grunts don't ever tell their Moms about . And don't worry too much cuz that wont do a thing for you but make you old too soon . One last thing if you look at our history we do ok in conventional conflict , not so hot in whats called low intensity or insurgent warfare . If someone wants to go toe to toe with you right on its what we do best . When they are willing to lose battles longer than we are willing to win them we got trouble. Anyone tries to tell you its all about who has the most tanks and arty pieces we will go over some stuff about 1940 Europe and its Order of Battle for them . BTW the last born again hard grunts came from harmony church and the temp WW2 barracks that we were using in 1983 ;) <S> my brother , and I got a couple questions for you . Is there really such a thing as a Stress card you can pull out when yer Drill Sergeant is being to mean ? When you turned Blue did you get to drink that nectar called Infantry Punch ? I cant imagine the Ft. Benning bogey with the card , or with out the drink .

People in Korea are worried because we use things called indicators that help us judge what NK is planning. Well, it's springtime which is the time of year where they'd come south if they ever decided to do that, and so if people start noticing and documenting other indicators (no I won't say what they are) then they might get worried. Everyone notices what's important for their own job, so if they start noticing things in their area of responsibility, it might be part of a larger picture or it might just be activity in that one area, but the average guy over there can't tell because they don't see the whole picture.
I don't know if they're doing anything other than putting a rocket on a launch pad and making noise about restarting their nuke programs, so I don't know enough to be "worried". But I'm also not actually in Korea now either.

LOL at stress card, 11b isnt coed :aok as far as the drink no we didnt they say the alcohol in it shouldnt be drank by minors(Im old enough to die for my country but not drink it :noid )
As for what you said, your right I work with the ROKs they are very disciplined and they dont complain about anything, they work weekends without questions. I actually heard a awful rumor about the ROKS last week, they now have a 5 star general and they follow about the same ranks as us for officers, I think they are planning for war. The only really thing is what Nilsen said about artillery pointed at major cities. Im in the Honor Guard company in Yongsan where all the high ranks are at, its sqaure in the middle of Seoul. Seoul is suppose to only be safe for about 30 minutes after they declare war, then last about 5 minutes to the amount of arti dumped on it....I hope the Air Force gets to them before they got a chance to shoot them at us. But it is true we would most definately win this, we will win atleast the next decade of wars without any military upgrades. I went to a range here and qualified expert on a M4 and M9. I got to see the changing of the guard of the ROKs on the DMZ, it was a convoy like one of the super convoys in Iraq. We got our metal here too, Abrams, Bradleys, MLRS,M129s, and our Apaches It makes me feel good, just typing this makes me just want to threaten them i got to go Im fired up im gunna PT at 10 at night :rock

You must not have seen the generals brief I saw, saw like 100 stars that day, and the size of the operation that had just happened, not battalion sized operation think a US post size operation

NK isn't going to do anything. This isn't 1950, Taiwan is still a powder keg, I see China doing something stupid before NK.

I think China is too dependant on trade with the outside world now to risk losing all they have gained over the last couple of decades to do anything to Taiwan.

If there is one thing I've learned in life. When you least expect it, someone will do something stupid and risk it.

Chinese failed as commies but are really making strides as dirty capatilists aint they ? No I am not worried about the chinese nothing makes you quit getting warlike than a healthy dose of prosperity . The PRK has too much power in one mans hands who is mentally unstable for me to feel safe about it .

You would be surprised what a dumb ole hlbly might know . My dad spent 27 years as an analyst for Air Force security service . Surveillance and warning center supervisor . Instructor at Goodefellow AFB tech school for 6 years . Man has loads of talent . He wont go into any details but he says from personal experience that when at the height of the cold war you have Russian and Chinese migs flying a BARCAP between US recon Aircraft and PRK migs . You have some people that to describe them as unpredictable is akin to describing gang rape as a mild form of social deviation , pretty much says it all . While I enlisted at a very rebellious stage in my life and went Infantry . How ever some of his talent trickled down . I managed to figure out what the AF installation at Shemya does . When I asked him he pretended I wasn't even there . I am no engineer but I know people . I know what junk does . I know where he is . Not from anything I have read either . No offense at all but I still stand by advice to junk .

Unsolicited programs like Silent Eagle are pretty common when aging platforms are looking at retirement, especially when the cost of the replacement (in this case the F-22), or the viability of the replacement (remember the A-12 program?) have congress concerned. Boeing saw an opening when real talk of canceling the F-22 began to surface, and they acted on it.

Your probably correct here, but this is kinda the explosion Im talking about China and NK being allies can help eachother get what they want in the orient seeing they probably are the strongest countries in the reason besides the Bear up north

Honestly I thought it was a hoax when I saw the first pics of it.
My second thought was, even if it was real, who'd buy it? Especially if it costs more than a "regular" F-15 variant currently in production?
-
I know I don't really have any bearing on this conversation, but I thought I would throw my $0.02 in anyway. I don't really know much, so take it for what it's worth.
Pertaining to Korea, I personally think that N. Korea wouldn't have the necessary resources or availability to conduct a full-scale war for very long. They may be able to launch a good initial campaign, but I think politics and questionable allegiance to the country might have an effect on how long they would actually be able to keep it up. I'm not dismissing them as a threat by any means, I just think they're blowing a bit of smoke and showing some muscle. "Hey, look at us. We're still a big enough country to launch our own rockets, tee-hee!" *BOOM, MISSILE DESTROYED* "Aw, shucks, guys...lemme show you just this once how tough I am?"
For that Silent Eagle, I have no idea how important stealth is to the modern Air Force, but I think having all these stealth fighters is pointless if they cost a ton of money and there are only a few of them. Depending on the type of warfare, a bunch of easier to produce, cheaper planes might be better than a few stealthy, expensive to maintain and produce planes.
Remember, I don't know a ton...go easy on me :lol

Its set to be cheaper than the F35 so i think they are targeting those who find the pricehike of the F35 to hard to swallow. We are gonna order the F35 but i actually find the Silent Eagle interesting for a couple of reasons. It has the speed to intercept the russians we usually have to go intercept and its got the safety of twin engines that i think we really need over the places we fly.
-
Don't get me wrong, I think the F-15E is a great airplane and an updated variant would remain a valuable asset for another couple of decades at least. I just don't realistically see any buyers. The USAF has stated multiple times that they're not buying any more non-stealth combat aircraft, even though there isn't a replacement for the F-15 or F-15E anywhere. The F-22 will not be purchased in great enough numbers to replace the F-15C, so it's not a viable replacement. The F-35 is a stealthed up viper with gucci electronics and revolutionary integrated systems, but it's still a viper replacement. So there is no F-15 replacement program anywhere in sight. IMHO that means we ought to buy a few hundred more F-15Es while we still can, and we should get the cheapest ones possible because we can upgrade them later. More to the point, buying an entirely different F-15 variant would I think be needlessly expensive to buy, operate, and maintain. If we really need a stealthy attack fighter, a re-designed stretch F-22 built with cost effectiveness in mind from the beginning would be my first choice.
But I'm not the CSAF and never will be, so what do I know eh?
