i been looking at the reviews and cost to get into a DDR3 system .. what do you think?
intel side CPU/MEMORY/BOARD ~600.00 (i7 920, X58 chipset, triple channel) <- its a i7 blows anything away..speaks for itself
amd side CPU/MEMORY/BOARD ~350.00 (AM3 720 BE, 790GX chipset, triple channel) <- blows away most of the mid-range C2D's .. better then E8400, OC's too 3.5 on air, ACC unlocks 4th core if you can get the right chip. cost is 1/2 of what intel would run.

Just a little off topic here... It would be nice if AMD got their act together when it comes to multiple core processors. I certainly don't want to have to dish out an extra $200 for a new motherboard just to get the latest Intel processor(s).
I obviously would-obviously-prefer the i7, as Intel has been much better in the processor creation game recently. Plus the X-58 supports CrossFire and SLI making it ideal for gamers who don't know if they will stick to either NVIDIA or ATI. Overall, it's fast, so who doesn't want it if they can afford it?

Sort of on topic. Personally I always have a hard time scraping one computer to build another. So to just buy a board, memory, and cpu is rarely the case for me. If I did then I would have an extra mb, ram, and cpu lying around that are perfectly good. Which is almost another computer.

Whether a particular design 'blows away' another design is not always the thing to look at. If your goal is to buy a system you will not have to replace for awhile and you also have enough cash to go around then fine. Otherwise you may want to buy something that is 'adequate' for whatever tasks you have in mind (AH doesnt require the latest/greatest). You may be able to step down your 'kid in the candy shop' view and buy something that makes more sense and have cash left over for things like CH controls or what have you.
