Title: The thread does not break rule 14.
Post by: Swoop on April 03, 2009, 12:41:20 PM
Really.

I just wanna know people's opinions on Obama's gift giving.  First he gives his British counterpart a set of DVDs and Churchill's statue back but now......now he gives the Queen an ipod and guitar hero.

Um......why?

I mean even if Her Magesty wasn't 500 years old and wondering what one does with one's ipod........ok, personally I'd happily accept gaming age gifts from the President of America but I'm kinda wondering what on earth he was thinking.  Actually, no I'm wondering if he was thinking.

I give the the people of America a babe every week and in return Obama gives my Monarch an ipod?!

It's like giving your rich grandmother a present....she has everything already.  So you give her something maybe she never thought she wanted...old people don't know how much fun those items are without trying them.  They themselves would never buy them to find out...so it's up to the younger people to help broden their horizons.....or I have no idea.

What do you want him to give as a gift....the 13 colonies back...lol.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if the DVD collection he gave the British PM turned out to be a bunch of Chinese bootlegs?

 :lol

I think he probably relies on some of his staff to handle that and doesn't micromanage them much.  He's probably the most busy man in the world right now, and some things just have to be delegated.  I don't know that but I think it's a reasonable assumption based on what I've seen and heard in the news about how the office operates.

I also kind of think that the focus on what gifts were given back and forth by heads of state and such is really superficial.  There is real stuff happening in the world and the news spends entirely too much time on this kind of non-issue.

With that being said, the gifts were embarrasingly out of touch and inappropriate for the office of the giver and the reciever in each case.

But so what, really.  It doesn't amount to anything at all, in either the long run or the short.  I'd much rather he be working on the important things than spending time agonizing over the perfect gift to get Gordon Brown and his family.  I'd also rather Brown focus on real problems that need work for that matter.  The whole thing is silly.

My .02 fwiw.

This has to be a belated april fools, how can anyone possibly be that stupid. :lol  An i-pod and guitar hero for the queen?  :lol  Delegated or not, little thought went into these gifts.  I thought the whitehouse was going to "get it right" after the DVD gaffe with the PM.  Who did he delegate it to?  One of his daughters?

The Queen bought an ipod mini in 2004, so maybe he is just keeping her up to date?

I think the folks saying "What do you give the woman who has/can afford anything?" are right.  Gifts should be just that, a gift of something you hope they don't already have.

It might be nice for her to use when spending family time with some of the younger royal family.  How cool would it be if you sat with your queen and had fun with modern technology?

If it were me...a small (14" to 18") bronze statue honoring her father would be nice.

:salute Her Majesty and all her subjects.

Ya know.....I've half a mind to withhold further Wednesday Babes until the British people get an official apology from the White House (as a point of interest, you know why it's white don't you?  Cos some of my ancestors set fire to the damn place and some of yours hadda repaint it).

Write to your congressman people, the future of Wednesdays depend on it!

ok, ok, I'm not trolling, just a joke.  Here's hoping that the current administrations lack of respect for the long standing alliance and friendship between our two countries never spreads to the real world.  Or here.

P.S.  karaya, say "Scotch" and I'll send you my address.

Well, I'm not saying that the gifts were not thoughtless and seemed very off the cuff.  I'm just saying that it's not as big a deal as the media (on both sides of the pond) make it seem.  Remember that we're colonials, crass cowboys, with no reguard for protocol or the manners of the court.

Don't hold it against us man, many of us (myself included) love the Brits.

My favorite tv show right now is British, and I'm not talking about TopGear.

Things will improve as he grows into the job, I'm sure of it.  The dvds and models of AirForce2 and iPods will eventually be redressed, doubtless.

Over here 'they' are saying how thoughtful and considerate the gift was and how 'accepted' the Obamas here everywhere they go. If it makes you feel better I think he put more thought into that gift than he has anything he has done in the last two years but probably one of his yuppy aides came up with the idea for that!
