I am getting a rock ford fosgate enclosure for free next week. Is there a way to see if they work?
These are for a vehicle.

Hook it up to a home stereo is the easy redneck answer.....place a 9V battery on the leads...if it moves without any scratching sounds it works....but there is a difference between an enclosure and a subwoofer...just an encolsure and you won't be hearing anything because that's the box that the sub goes in to make things go boom.

It is one of them pre loaded enclosures....... it already has two 12" subs in it.
-
Rockford only sells prefab boxes with enclosures btw....
EDIT:That was ment to be posted before you did :D
****Tell me the voice coil independence****
If these are going to be in your car you will need as follows.
1. A plate amplifier. (i can help you find a good one that matches the subs needs if needed)
2. A good amount of trunk space.
3. A capacitor for the amplifier. (it delivers extra burst of power win the bass hits.)
4. A new head unit/radio for you car (or buy an adapter you will be better off with the new head unit.)
5. PATIENCE!
PM me for help! I just finished a box for a single 12 inch Kicker CVR.

Is impedance the word you were looking for?
If you don't have an amp to hook them up to for testing you can push the cones in gently, and with even pressure. If they move freely they are most likely OK, if you can feel or hear internal friction then the voice coils are bad. Rockford doesn't make the best stuff SQ wise but their subs are pretty durable.

Thats it :D
Once you want to upgrade (if you ever do) look into the Fi, Re, and Sundown Audio companies. They are not huge in the retail but they are by far the highest end subs for daily driving and SPL competitions.

There's nothing worse than a jump box driving down the road with the subs blasting and the trunk and body panels rattling.

Sure there is.... An old dude who thinks its too loud. :P

Arrggggg. That and these idiots that spend hundreds to put an exhaust system on that sounds like a 60's VW with a broken muffler. Every time I see one of those I wanna step up on the muffler and snap it off. Havnt yet but who knows :D

You would hate Elizabeth City, NC then. We have about 40% of drivers with those mufflers, and 30% with boombox cars. :)

Like Tec says, you can push the cones in and feel for rubbing, scratching. That will tell you if there is any mechanical damage to the voice coil(s). You would also need to check continuity. A fancy word meaning current can pass from the input to the output.
But really, why don't you call your local car stereo store and ask if they will test it for you. We ( that's what I do) do it for free where I work. They can advise you on how to install it and what you will need. However I strongly advise you let a professional shop do it.
