Title: Typhoon v Jug
Post by: ra on June 26, 2000, 11:44:00 AM
Can anyone think of an aerodynamic explanation for the huge difference in E-retention between these 2 planes?

tempest is a typhoon w p-51 type laminar flow wings
and it turned the typhoon into a great fighter

lift makes drag and drag is bad for e and the amount of drag created by lift (induced drag) affects this.

theres more to it than that but thats the general idea

P-47 wing is eliptical also. Which helps in the roll department.

I understand that lift creates drag, but the Typhoon doesn't handle in a way which exhibits a lot of lift.  It hauls about the same load as a F4U, but doesn't turn as tight OR retain energy as well.  It seems to  have the worst of both worlds, poor turn and poor E retention.  The P-47 and Hog at least have good E-retention, even without laminar flow.

I know that airfoils have a huge influence on an aircraft's performance, maybe Hawker picked an incredibly bad airfoil.

The Typhoon had a wing very similar in design to the Hurricane, ie thick., which is why it retains E very poorly.

Also i believe the jug and tempest's wings are somewhat eliptical which apparently helps e-retension (why is that?, put of curiosity)

In RL the wings of the Typhoon were STRONG. That's about all they had going for them  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

One thing that's not modelled is the buffeting the Typhoon suffered with 1000lb bombs at medium -> high speeds.. I'm not too bothered about that  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Mostly, it just comes down to the Jug being heavier.  A heavier plane doesn't slow down as quickly.  There's some 3000 lbs difference between those 2 planes in fighter configuration.

Typhoon has the biggest prop of any plane in the game.  I'm pretty sure this causes the need for a lot of trim at low speeds, and a lot of drag from high slip angles if you aren't trimming carefully.
