13. Shelby Metcalf, basketball coach at Texas A&M, recounting what he told a player who received four F's and one D: "Son, looks to me like you're spending too much time on one subject."

Well, Yogi is a smart man, he just says things in an unusual way. Many of the rediculous things attributed to him didn't come from him at all. His long time friend and co-hall of famer Joe Garagiola said that if you read a quote attributed to Yogi and it's just dumb, he probably didn't say it, but if you have to think about it for a few seconds, it most likely was. He didn't say dumb things he just says things in an unusual manner.
I grew up near Houston and Yogi was a coach with the Astros for some of that time. I always really loved seeing interviews with him, he was great and funny.
I know I'm not really adding anything to the discussion here, I just felt like I needed to clarify the Yogisims a little bit.

Yogi didn't "flaunt" Ebonics. I cringe when I hear Ebonics from "High Profile" people. There is no excuse for it.

Aside from their poor grammar... I do love one thing tremendously about pro athletes (and entertainers of every sort as well).
You don't "make it" if you suck. You don't make it if you're good, but there's someone else in line who's great. There's true competition; losers go home to practice more. It's just about one of the finest examples of practice, practice, practice until you're the best.
So even though those guys sounded like dorks when they were speaking ~ I respect very much that they worked hard enough to get to the top of their own game... beating out lesser athletes (even if the lesser athletes had better grammar).

"I want to thank the league because if it wasn't for football, I wouldn't be playing football, today".
