Title: Doolittle anyone?
Post by: Haplo81 on April 06, 2009, 12:50:09 PM
Since we can't choose them while on a CV, has anyone landed and then taken off from a CV in a b25?  I did a while back but forgot what happened.  I'll have to try again tonight.

What were your results?

BTDT

Landing and taking off is not to big a deal.

You can even reload and refuel while there.

I take advantage of CVs in the area when I am in my 38J too.

With no arresting hook, how do you stop close enough to the stern to have sufficient deck length in front of you for takeoff?

I suppose it helps that our CVs are steaming faster than a historical carrier group and our planes are usually lighter by several hundred pounds of fuel.

I remember about a year ago there was a glitch that allowed B-25Cs to up off CVs. It was quite easy to do with just 2 or 3 notches of flaps. I was even able to up and keep my drones. It was a good time  :)

once you have landed on the CV and come to a complete stop.....give it just a "hair" of throttle ...the idea is to go slower then the Carrier is moving ...if you do it correctly your plane will appear to be moving slowly backwards ....I think what is really happening is the CV is running out from underneath you since you are moving slower then the CV .....I use the rudder to line myself up ....roll back as far as you need to ...then close throttle and apply brakes and your plane will stop ...If you are in the correct possition you will get the "reloading in 30 seconds message" ....if not roll back further ...and try again ....once your plane is reloaded you may take off as normal ...this technique is the only way to rearm on a Carrier without ending mission ......

also when you first start a mission on a carrier you are deployed roughly 1/3 from the back of the Carrier ....if you are carrying alot of fuel Ord. etc ...you may not have enuff deck space to get aloft ....you can use this "rollback" technique to give you some more deck to take off with as well

a word of caution ....it is possible to roll right off the back of the Carrier ...so be careful when doing this ...I hope you find these tips useful

Helm ...out

Landing on Cv's is no big deal because they are always pushing max speed, and we have NO wind pushing you in different directions, AND the bow of the ship is not going up and down and rolling side to side.

Right now our CV fleets are about as "easy mode" as you can get. (No joke no lie, no BS)

I didnt even land f4us or f6f's with hook, after the hook and gear were separated, for almost 6 months.
That's sad, not that a 03' player like me doesnt know the hook command, but the fact i did not NEED IT.

I wonder if HT could enable the B25C off carriers on April 18th to mark the anniversary of the raid.

One day I was flying near tank town island on the map that is currently running in one of the late war arenas (forget which one), and saw an enemy CV.  When I was done with that sortie I took off in a set of AR-234s to kill the CV.

As I prepared to make my drop I noticed a whole gaggle of B-25s sitting on the flight deck.  Wow.  Anyhow, I dropped my bombload, and it ended up hitting the front end of the flight deck and only killed one or two of the B-25s, and failed to kill the CV.

As it turned out, some guys had decided to reenact the Doolittle raid, so they'd all landed B-25s on that CV, backed up to the rear of the ship so they could take off again, and were all waiting for the CV to get closer to their end target before taking off, when I happened along.  There must have been at least a half a dozen of them.

I don't think it'd get that much activity but I'm sure you would get some NOE missions with them (turn drones off!) for people that want to do small reenactments.

I think that was us (DHBG), we re-enact the Dolittle Raid every year, we used to use the B26, but of course we have the 25 now, last year we were lucky enough to be allowed use of the SEA, B25's were carrier enabled (although in the 4 years i've participated in it, landing, backing up and refuelling were part of the fun!)
