I know that Guppy and others have posted about the Life images at Google before. However, it looks like they have added many more US Navy aircraft color images that I thought some of you might be interested in.
Here's a few examples,
The first is an FJ-1 (very rare only 33 were built), the USN's first pure-jet fighter.
Most are WW2 era photo's and they are much larger images at the site.

This one is my absolute favorite... SBDs patrolling over Midway, only a few days after the battle.

When I went to Iwo Jima, the biggest impression I was left with was one of confusion from the colors. There are obviously very recognizable landmarks still there, but I had always seen them in black and white photos, so to see the different colors made it almost seem like I wasn't in the right place. For example, when you look into Suribachi's crater, its a very colorful scene, with bright rusty red splotches and almost neon yellow from the sulfur venting. I almost feel the same way when I see these color photos of the WWII aircraft. You're so used to seeing them in black and white that you never seem to get a feel for the way they should look in color. That photo from Midway epitomizes that sensation, since you not only get a very vivid picture of the aircraft and their color, but also that of the lagoon surrounding the atoll.
Regardless, very nice images gentlemen--thanks for taking the time to post them.

That is a great shot Widewing. I thought you were talking about this one (I forgot you mentioned the formation);

Nice view of the bomb sling there.

Thanks for posting this link... I'm a professional photographer by trade, and these WW2 shots are truly fantastic images. Even more impressive, is that these photographs were produced in an age before Photo Shop. Modern photographers are spoiled and lazy, to be honest.

The F7F looks so damn good in the two pics you get if you search for "F7F"...

Gorgeous photos. Thank you.

That is a Martin PBM-1
This is something a little different, of course it's pretty easy if you read the tail.

And this is the TBD that we should have for Midway.

That is a Martin PBM-1 Mariner, circa 1940.

I tried Googling for Spitfires and hurricanes with the "source: LIFE" and didn't get anything but the guys practicing tactics on bicycles

LIFE is an American publication. There were a few when I looked last night, but there will NOT be many Spitfire/Hurry photos from LIFE.
