A little bird, with yellow bill.......
-
Around her neck, she wore a yellow ribbon.
She wore it in the springtime, in the merry month of May.
And if you asked her why the hell she wore it,
she wore it for her lover in the US Cavalry!
Cavalry!
Cavalry!
She wore it for her lover in the US Cavalry.
Around her leg, she wore a yellow garter.
She wore it in the springtime, in the merry month of May.
And if you asked her why the hell she wore it,
she wore it for her lover in the US Cavalry!
Cavalry!
Cavalry!
She wore it for her lover in the US Cavalry.
Around the block, she pushed a baby carriage.
She pushed it in the springtime, in the merry month of May.
And if you asked her why the hell she pushed it,
she pushed it for her lover in the US Cavalry!
Cavalry!
Cavalry!
She pushed it for her lover in the US Cavalry.
Behind the door, her daddy kept a shotgun.
He kept it in the springtime, in the merry month of May.
And if you asked him why the hell he kept it,
he kept it for her lover in the US Cavalry!
Cavalry!
Cavalry!
he kept it for her lover in the US Cavalry.
The way we usually do this one is that the formation leader (NCO or Officer) sings the verses, and when it gets to the chorus the unit repeats the "Cavalry!" calls (so it gose "Cavalry! Cavalry!, Cavalry! Cavalry!") and all sing the last line. It can also be done as a cadence with the unit repeating each line back and the chorus done in the same way. We usually do it the first way when mounted and the second when marching.

Not a cadence, but-
1. Let Bacchus' sons be not dismayed
But join with me, each jovial blade
Come, drink and sing and lend your aid
To help me with the chorus:
Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.
2. We are the boys who take delight
In smashing Limerick lamps at night,
And through the street like sportsters fight,
Tearing all before us
Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.
3. We'll break the windows, we'll break down doors,
The watch knock down by threes and fours,
And let the doctors work their cures,
And tinker up our bruised
Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.
4. We'll beat the bailiffs out of fun,
We'll make the mayor and sheriffs run
We are the boys no man dares dun
If he regards a whole skin.
Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.
5. Our hearts so stout have got us fame
For soon 'tis known from whence we came
Where'er we go they fear the name
Of Garryowen in glory.
Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.
And the tune is http://www.contemplator.com/midimusic/garryown.mid
When its used as a marching song, like cadence, the leader (senior NCO or Officer) sings the verses, and the unit sings back the chorus.
Nearly everyone has heard the song, but most don't realize what it is. For example, its the one tune most people recall from the John Wayne movie The Quiet Man

A Tanker and an Engineer where drinking from a can
to the tanker said the engineer outdrink me if you can
the tanker took a sip and then he started turning green
the engineer kept drinking it was only gasolene.

then one day a drunken engineer saw to her discourse
now she's a broken hunk of concrete and she should be reinforced!
"chorus"

they new the spanish rum fleet would be headed there that day
when they arrived all they found was kegs afloating in the bay
the engineers had beat em by nine and half a day
"chorus"
There are about 7 diff verses to this one, and there have been various additions (infantry, airborne, couple others)
Thats all I can remember of it though.

Beer! Beer! Beer! Said the Privates.

but none so fair that we can compare to the US Cavalry!
Old King Cole was a merry old soul,

I need a three day pass said the Corporal

(chorus)
-
Riding tall we go to battle,
Used to go to war on a horse and a saddle.
Quiet as wind behind enemy lines,
Working our way through bush and vines.
Knowing one day we will face death,
And there we will breathe our final breath.
So hear me Scouts and hear me well,
Drive on Cavalry and give 'em hell.

I'd love to share "Yogi was a big brown bear", but that one gets really bad after the first few verses.
-
The 1st Armor captured this one in the 40s. The army sings it a lot.
Ob's stürmt oder schneit,
(Whether it storms or snows)
Ob die Sonne uns lacht
(Whether the sun shines upon us)
Der Tag glühend heiß
(The day burning hot)
Oder eiskalt die Nacht
(Or the night freezing cold)
Bestaubt sind die Gesichter
(Dusty are our faces)
Doch froh ist unser Sinn
(But happy we are at heart)
Ist unser Sinn
(We're at heart)
Es braust unser Panzer
(Our tank roars ahead)
Im Sturmwind dahin
(Along with the storm wind!)
John Ringos version...
Regards,
Kevin

I've always heard this played in movies about Custer and the 7th Calvary - usually when they are riding off to whatever the PC crowd calls the Custer's Last Stand battle nowadays. Never knew the actual words to the song though - thanks!
-
Theres a more modern version (written in 1905) that the current 7th Cavalry sings to pays homage to their history, but since I'm about as anti-Custer as a guy can get, I refuse to learn the lyrics. I'll find it and share if you want though.
