Title: Martin Baker MB.5
Post by: Jimdandy on August 16, 2001, 11:27:00 AM
We need an MB.5 perk plane.  :D I know there was only one made and it never was in combat but I want it.  :D I'll buy it for 100 perk points.  :D

Yeah, MB3 or MB5 will do nicely!   :)  6 x 20mm hispanos... that'll get 'em crying   :)

Yes, please!! a MB5!!! I vote for it to be modelled just as the work on the Go229 has been finished!

I like this plane very much! However it has nothing to do with the actual WW2 and only one was ever built, so it's not appropriate for AH.

I agree with RAM and GRUNHERTZ.  The MB.5 is a neat plane, but it has no place in AH.

You'd probably have better luck getting a Spiteful or Dh Hornet in than the MB, but I'd hope neither gets added. A Spit XIV would likely be as close as it will come, or perhaps a Low Alt XII LF or an XVIII.

Just to think about it though...

P-51H
F7F
F8F
Fury
Spitfire F.21/22
Spiteful
M.B.5
CA-15
F4U-3/4/5
P-47J
Do 335
Ta 152C
Me 109K-14
P-82

etc...

In such an uber-arena(props only) - which plane(s) would come out on top?

Juzz,

You left out the Japanese contribution to the "Super Props":

Its hard to say Juzz.

The P51H and P47J would be fastest at really high alts and would be flown like the current P51D.

The Do335 would be as fast and faster under than both of them up to around 25k. Im not sure what its manuverabilty is like but it does have pretty big and broad wing.  So it could be the "Dora" to the P51H/P47J. A little faster under a certain alt but maybe less manuverable.

The Spit21/22 would be much like the SpitIX in here. Somewhat slower than the top speeders but much more manuverable and easier to kill in.

The Spiteful never weorked right.

The Fury and TempestII, and MB5 would be like the Chog, big tough, generally manuverable, and reasonably fast with good dive and lots of hispano ammo.

The F8F would be the Yak of the bunch. A lttle slower than the monster top speeders and not exactly a dedicated turner, an experts plane.

The Me109K14 would be very much optdated and hard to fly well in this setup. It would probably do around 470mph or more at alt and climb much better at all alts owing to the DB605L engine and the 4 bladed prop. It would have 3 30mm cannon, but I cant imagine how its handling would be with all that weight and extra speed. Though it was to have numerous aerodynamic improvements so maybe they fixed this. BTW the K series had improved ailerons which really helped high speed roll.

The Ta152C would be the FW190A8 of this group. Its speed isnt that remarkable at about 450mph or so, its climb isnt that great and its very heavy so its turn is poor but rolls well. However it could mount up to SEVEN 20mm and or 30mm cannon, with some of those likely being MG213 20mm high velocity 1000rpm rotary cannon.

P82 would really be a faster P38, a big target as well.

Im not sure who would win but I suppose the Spit21/22 followed by Tempest/Fury/MB5, then P51H group would be on the top for use in a "1946 Arena".

You could add the P-38 K modifications, perhaps to an L series base airframe and get a surprisingly good plane for this mix I imagine.

The MB.5 really doesn't have a place in the MA. It might be kind of fun to have an events arena that these planes could be flown in. Set up "what if" snap shots. Something for much later though. Just a fun thought.

I read the A&AEE evaluation of the M.B.5 today. They said it was L337!

I'd much rather see some thing that achieved operational status, such as the Westland Whirlwind. Small, twin engined and cannon armed it's make a sweet early/mid war ride.

Max speed: 360mph at 15,000 ft

Max climb: 1,300 ft/min

Time to 20,000: 8,6 min

service ceiling: 30,000

Endurance: 1,25 hrs

2 x 250 or 2 x 500 lb bombs

four centre mounted Mk.1 Hispanos

For those that don't know it it looked a bit like a small single boom P38.

Aircraft and Armament Experimental Establishment. Based at Boscombe Down, tested British and foreign aircraft for the RAF.
L337 or L33T. Leet, short for elite amongst kids who spend too much time in chat rooms.
