Title: Osty on Discovery Channel....... question
Post by: Sparks on October 23, 2000, 09:32:00 AM
Just saw "Tanks" program on Discovery - reviewed the usage of Panzer chassis and dealt with AA versions. It said there were 3 variants - first one I forget name of but it had drop down armour plate sides so was no use. Second one was .... well it meant Whirlwind and had 4 cannon I think - was much better and many produced. Last was Ostwind which with big gun was much better but only 43 built. IS THAT RIGHT ?? there were only 43 built ?????
If so - why do we have it here ??  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/confused.gif) - just my thoughts......

Because a Mobelwagen would have been harder to model and with no defense.  The Ostwind in AH has to cover that whole class of vehicles.  Be glad we didn't model an M19. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Sparks, based on which reference you use the total production of Ostwind vehicles is between 40 and 52. I'd prefer something with better numbers made, since numbers often reflect the combat effectiveness of a given item.

Are you going to change the damage model though?

Just a thought, but if your in a OSTI and gunning, .50 cals and .20mm’s  should dismember you rather quick and grotesquely,  no? Kinda like those poor saps on the tank in Saving Private Ryan that the .20mm gun opened up on.

So why not model if your inside a OSTI  driving, the bullets bounce off like they do now. But if your in the open turret gunning away, you die quickly, and horribly when I pour a whole load of cannons into that open turret.

It would be funny watching the score hounds hammering away at a spawn point, then having to scramble for the hatch cover when planes showed up.

Think about the new strategy options as well. One plane could bait the gunner out at say 2K, and as he’s blasting away at him, yer partner could dive in and blind side him. Or if you’re a single fighter,  as you dove in, instead of him taking 200 rounds and staying in the turret hitting you once immediately killing you, he would have to make a long shot, risk it, or  button down giving you a clear target for your 1000ers.

Creamo thats pretty much the way it is now, its very easy to shoot out the gunner in the Ostie.

That is if you get into guns range alive.

That may be, just not on my FE. Got lotsa film too.

I'll go try it again though and see if maybe I need to get closer.

Try it from the Ostwind side.

It usually comes down to who shoots the straightest and scores first. If the Ostie hits you, your dead.

When I have driven the Ostwind I notice that alot of people start to fire from way far out like 1.6k or more, and expect to hit you, and claim "The Armor was too tough". Nope usually they just miss. You should start firing at a ground vehicle at the same distance you fire at an airplane. Which for me equals 500 yards or less.

Another thing I have noticed in Ostwinds is that in the "Gunfighters duel" (HO duel) lag can play a big part. On my FE I will shoot his wing off as he is making his strafing run, and I will see him start too cartwheel away, and then I will still hear a hailstorm of pings and my turret will be disable (ie gunner dead). On his FE he probably saw himself strafe me solidly to just die as he passed over me, and he thinks I am unharmed.

But he can't know that I have no gun/gunner,  because I am still in a turretless Ostie, while he sits in the tower.

M-19 should be the first perk tank.

Btw Pyro...any chance for the quad .50 AAA turrent on a trailer? That would effectively double the M-16's power and help the M3 out some  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Personally I'd like to see a SPW-250 or 251.

That way, the Germans would have their halftrack, it could be made into an 20mm AAA platform, and, like the American halftracks, turned into an assault gun.

Did I mention that btw? from .50 to 105mm (the short french cannons are cool, but the 75mm AT gun would be a nice change!)

You think that's scary?

Just wait till you hear how fast it is.

The "Duster" was an evil think. Indeed.

What tank chassis was it built on? And how fast was it?

Thats one vehicle I'm not familiar with in the least.

It's the closest to the M24's chassis. That particular M-19 has small sand skirts (some had them removed)

It runs at around 45 mph max.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/eek.gif)
