Title: What am I doing wrong with the Hi-Res pack?
Post by: Saurdaukar on April 21, 2009, 12:20:36 PM
Downloaded the pack.

Installed the pack.

Textures set to 1024 or whatever it is.

Playing on 1400x900.

First off, it is clear that the picture I have seen posted of the Hi-Res airplanes dont even come close to what I see in game.  Its like the standard resolution textures are still there.

Also, since installing the Hi-Res pack, I get get occasional screen freezes and strange, random, graphical "glitches" like a block or a rectangle showing up for a split second and then disappearing.

Thoughts?  Is there some sort of 1, 2, 3 order that I wont know to follow to get this to work correctly?

EDIT:  Oh, and Ive started to encounter the "White Screen of Death" CTD after the install, too.

Must be something Im doing wrong.

Is, "Widescreen" mode checked?

Could be you have overloaded the video card's capabilty.

Remember, when you go from 512 textures to 1024, it is quadrupling the resource requirements for the texture handling.

Stutters and pauses are normally due to the video card not being able to get the textures processed fast enough.  Or it could be due to a very slow hard drive, like a laptop hard drive (5400 RPM typically).

Bottomline, usually if you get pauses and stutters when switching to the high res texture pack, then you should not be running the hiogh res texture pack on that computer.

Computer can hack it.  3.0 DC w/ 512MB 8800GT.

Frame rates show a solid 60, regardless of activity.

Mazz, it might help if you post a directx diagnostic dump.  Start menu > Run... > "dxdiag" > "Save all information".

What's the core temperature of your GPU when you start noticing the strange graphical-glitches?

do you have your anti-alising turned up on your card?
Title: Re: What am I doing wrong with the Hi-Res pack?

Frame rates do not matter.  If the computer cannot get the textures loaded to the video card fast enough, for whatever reason, you will have stutters and pauses.

Everything in the computer can have an impact on this.

the 4x AA is a big leap over none.  Saur you need to apply this on desktop, outside of game in your video card settings.

To be sure that you're actually running at 1024 textures, you can go to the hangar and save one of the default plane skins and check if the textures are actually 1024x1024 pixels.

Turn the sound hardware acceleration down a notch from Full.  That Realtek chip is probably contributing to the problem.

If you are running any file security software or anti-virus software, it will also impact it.

If you are running the Saitek device manager, it could also have an impact.

To give you an idea, I run a core-duo E6300 (1.86GHZ slightly overclocked to 2.03GHZ), 2Gigs of DDR2-533 Ram, 7900GS 256MB PCI-e video (in a 4X only PCI slot) and I NEVER see any framerates under 45FPS with 1680X1050, 2XAA, and high res pack (running 1024 textures).

This is with my Turtle Beach Audio software (for my USB headset), Saitek Device manager, TrackIR, and Norton Corporate AV (albeit disabled) software running in the background.  I also manually shut down a bunch of processes beforehand.. I usually see 25-26 processes when I load AH.

Given your hardware is superior to mine and you're having these issues, I would have to think that either something is running in the background eating up resources, something is overheating (possible video, CPU, memory, or Hard Drive), a driver incompatibility, or even possibly a flaky Power Supply.

When I first built this computer, about two weeks later I started seeing similar issues.  No graphical anomalies or CTD, but a bunch of screen freezes and pauses... to make a long story short, the Hard Drive was failing and was transferring data very slowly.  Luckily I was able to back it up and get it warrantied.  I also had it sandwiched in between a floppy and a zip drive, so I'm sure heat had a bit to do with that...

Do you use a USB headset?

No.  Normal analog headset.

Although all power-heavy USB peripherals are hooked up to a powered hub if that was to be your next question.

When the game is preloading, you should see the file names go by under the "tip of the day" message. They should have xxxx_1024.TCA if your loading the hires files. Maybe deleting the cashe folder will rebuild with the hires.

Are you on Vista? Your computer is about the same as mine, though I have more RAM and mine runs the hires no trouble.... I did turn the AA down tho.

how's your power supply?
maybe the video card is now pushing the 12v amp draw beyond its means.
Also, have you tried a complete new install of AH? Maybe somethings corrupt..

Have not tried a complete re-install.

HOWEVER!  After making some changes, I have an entirely new problem.  My sound stutters/hangs for 3-4 seconds at a time.

Maybe I should just reinstall the OS, start from scratch and be done with it.

Thanks guys.  :)

I would not go through the trouble of reinstalling your OS. Like the fellas said above, check your power supply. If I were you, go into your bios and/or video card settings and find out if your drivers are compatible and are up to date. If all is good, then double check your resolutions on your monitor. If thats good, then perhaps your video card is overheating, or some other peice of hardware is overheating.

If you tried just about everything, and nothing changes, I have an advice for you: Dont use the Hi Res texture pack! It would save you a lot of time and headaches.

I would not go through the trouble of reinstalling your OS.

I 2nd that!.....Mazz

do a re-install of Aces high II ( BACK UP YOUR SIGHTS & SETTINGS FOLDERS 1st !!!)

or at least completely dump/delete everything in the cache folder under HTC/AcesHighII/  and reinstall the high res pack.then let the cache rebuild upon start up like fugitive suggested......

and yes, checking for updated video drivers or a better driver might work as well....

your video driver is dated :  1/9/2008   and your audio driver is dated: 2/26/08

check to see if there is newer drivers available perhaps.......
