Title: enemy icon.

so i've read,
when the distance icon displays 400 and closing you are 599 approching 400.
and
when the distance icon displays 400 and closing you are 500 approching 400.

which one is true?

IIRC

using your example an icon saying you are 400 out you should be between 350-450.

as i remember it your actual distance should be what ever it is half way between the next number that displays above and below the icon number.

hope this helps to clear it up and i hope i have it right.

sorry i forgot that the numbers were 600/400/200

your distance should be between 500 and 300

Yup, Dave's got it right now.

D200 is 101-300yds, D400 is 301-500yds, and D600 is 501-700yds.
