A Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber was pulled from Lake Michigan this morning after crashing 63 years ago during a training exercise, you can read the full story here:

Agencies began recovering lost planes in the late 1980s, but the process was on hold for the last 12 years until Navy officials pushed for its resumption.
That's interesting because, like Bodhi said, I thought the Navy was the main obstacle to aircraft recovery in the Great Lakes.

Not only the Navy has aircraft at lake bottoms. I recall excellent pictures of a B-17. Much better condition than in seawater.

Its things like these that preserve our heritage . Would be cool to be on a recovery like that , the adventure of it all and its hard work too , but worth it .
