My gaming computer was built about a year ago. Since leaving the game about 2 months ago I have used it very little. Every so often I fire it up to check it out and to check on an email account I have on it. Today when I fired it up I got a message saying Windows Genuine Advantage wanted to check my software to protect me from illegal copies. This surprised me since I have updated Windows XP often and have Automatic updates turned on.
So what is this about?

its microsoft being microsoft..

In your email?

In your email?
No. I check an e-mail account on that computer that I rarely use. This happened upon boot.

Ah, OK. I thought it was very strange that MS would contact you through Email :)

It's done it when I go to update. No biggie, they are just trying to quell the pirates.

microsoft is just making sure you didn't steal their OS.
-
No big deal. If your OS is legit just do it so it quits bugging you.
-
funny thing is i seen legit window installs fail the WGA
-
WGA can be removed. Google it. Of course when you next go to update the OS Win updates will attempt to reinstall it. Whatever, I don't regard it as any big deal as long as your installed copy of XP is legit.
-
WGA is needed when you want to download updates or patches from MS. For example directx download is now behind wga check.

Yeah, mine did. competely new WinXP bought from the store and 5 months later it says mine is not valid. A quick call to Micro$haft closed the deal and I got a new CD key.

Installed it. I'm good.
