Title: Stories behind the names.
Post by: rkanjl on April 27, 2009, 11:17:22 AM
I've been with Aces High for about 2 months now and I find the forums can be almost as much fun as the game.  You can really see just how much of a community and even family players have become.  A lot of you have some very interesting and different screen names and I just have to believe there are some great stories to go with those nicknames.  I thought it would be interesting if any of you cared to share the stories behind the names, or why you decided on your name.  I'll lead off but unfortunately mine is as boring as it gets so I'm hoping for you wilder types to take off and run with this!   I was named Michael after Michael the Archangel and just decided to spell it "rkanjl" if nothing other than it's shorter to type.  Let's hear your stories and the rest of you can maybe vote who's is the most interesting!  So, who's next?

Actually having a new thread like this every few months allows all the new people to explain theirs without reviving a 2 year old thread.

Betty, it doesn't have to be original and you know that.  We still love ya. :D

Used to have the in game handle 'Halcyon'. It references a mythical bird and also means happiness in something, so I combined the two to mean "being happy while flying" (I fly real planes in real life).
Took a break from AH2, came back recently and took 'Phoenix' as my in game name this time around (no one could EVER pronounce Halcyon right anyway hehe). Chose 'Phoenix' because I have a tattoo of one on my back, and it also has some personal meaning to my real life with the whole 'rise up out of the ashes' thing.

Phoenix fits you in the game as well since you have come back to rise up here again!

In c/b terms i was a "smokey" however when i started playing this game years ago i loved my bombers and on the return of every mission i was usually smokeing from some portion of my plane so the name seemed appropriate. :salute

In Game - Karaya.    "Karaya-One" was Hartmann's call sign.

BBS name is a little bit more complicated.

Masherbrum - Masherbrum is a mountain that lies within the "Masherbrum Mountains", which is a subgroup of the Karakoram (K2). My buddy Erich (since 7th grade) and I were planning on going into Alpine Ascents International in the Summer of 98. This mountain was picked a few years prior. In Dec of 1997, he was in a car accident and was in a coma for a month. I flew out to Portland (Tigard) in Jan of 98. He already knew he was the best man at my wedding. The wife and I decided he wouldn't be replaced and the rings would be given to the Pastor, had he been not able to attend. But, he re-learned to walk, and move again by the time our wedding rolled around. I shelved climbing altogether in 1998, because it wasn't "fun anymore" because of this.   He's fine now, except a fused right ankle with a very slight limp.   I know what Morpheus's family is going through right now and it brought this back up.

Original Name was PopPop as that was what my Grandson called me and loved to shoot the Tank guns at buildings. Changed it when I got disconnected when my Credit card info changed. Wanted a good name (Not number) that was simple and easily said. I have trouble clearing the 6 on some when I can't read thier name or have to say: "uh 700021331 watch that spit".   :huh

Slate should be hard as rock to destroy but I found it chips easily.  :D

When ever a game I was playing asked for a "name" I always typed in Maddog Joe. When I started in Air Warrior that was too many letters, and Maddog was taken so I became MDJOE. From 1996 when I started in AW through when EA killed it and I moved here to Aces High I had that name and was in pretty much only one squad, the 444th Air Mafia. In late 2004 I left the Mafia and took a break. When I came back in 2005 I came back as "The Fugitive", because we all know there is no "leaving the Mafia"  :D

It is my job to protect my people from they're karma, thus forcing them to live long and healthy lives.

You can kill someone, and then karma try's to lay you that blow in retaliation for your actions, but i will be there to stop it, again..and again..and again.

my brother was a sniper in most games, i had the duty of defending his position, long story short i would take bullet rounds to make sure he would survive to the end of the match round. (Action quake2) All while he was slinging his own death out, for almost 3 years we were close to unstopable.
Good times great memory's, the names always stuck, and anyone who's ever been in my area in aces high knows im like a freggin' flying awacs when it comes to tending over my countrymen.

SA first, wings second, guns third.

Im here to keep you alive, but i cant do my job if your dead.

The kitchen is never closed.

Started out as SPKmes because my nickname from naval time was spic due to my last name. Spic/k was taken so SPK the three initials used when top scores could only take three letters and mes start of my surname. Got offered a position in the kitchen and change tag accordingly. Wanted to choose something sharp and lethal but at the time my ability was very Blunt to say the least.

Started out with the same name as here on the BBS.  Kinda ironic as i was never shooting anyone down.

Changed to "Timber43" after i joined The Few.   Thought that since I was part of a squad that respects those "few" who flew during the BoB, that I should have a name that did the same.researched some Canadian pilots and found this chap who fit the bill for me....http://www.acesofww2.com/Canada/aces/woods.htm.   Timber from his call sign, and the 43 in rememberance of the year he went MIA.

The BBS nickname is obvious. It's been a standard since before Air Warrior.

The "SaVaGe" thing came about because I'm about 1/2 Cherokee and 1/2 German. Through several games, from Dungeons and Dragons in the seventies, through Air Warrior in the nineties, I always had some sort of variation or part of "Renegade Savage" (as in wild Indian) for a nickname of sorts. However, several people in AW and AH have often assumed the "SaVaGe" comes from the character "General Frank Savage", played by Gregory Peck, in the movie "Twelve O'Clock High". But it does not.

That was then.  Now I believe that I probably fit my name.

it was a long Drive home from my dad's work, Being 30 Miles from home and 2 hours stuck in traffic. My Brother, 8 at the time was pretty quiet, Unlike on the way there. Suddenly he burst out in a gruff, Southern Accent: "This Guy Named Barko!......Drove through a wall...." He kept making up stories that had my Dad in tears Laughing. It was nothing Unusual for my little brother to make up something funny but not funny enough to have my dad in tears. I asked him why he was laughing in tears. "He sounds like your uncle rob!" he said still laughing.

My Uncle rob, Who worked in the Navy for 28 Years, Soon Knew about the Barko Joke. Every time he Sends a Card or Email to me or my Dad he states "Barko Says Hi"

So No, My name is Not based on a Logging Company at Lake Superior, It's based on a Joke that had the Whole family Laughing their A** off.

Signed up to the other sim when it asked for a name I went with Stevex but felt like a bit of a knob when I saw others names.   When I moved here I thought I'd have me one of those hip names so went with Warlox...keeping the X and being trendy.  With a few short lived jobs my account was canceled so I came back with Lox....keeping the X again.  When I opened this account I wanted another name that ended with an X again.  Nothing to do with the X factor  :lol....so I'm sat there drinking a cold one mulling over what name to use ending in X.

Nothing to do with cats or helicopters....the name was in my hand as if by divine providence :aok

My normal online handle (imagitronics) was too long for AH. I was pretty sure I wouldn't even enjoy a game about WWII air combat, so I picked the first three-letter word that came out on the keyboard: "vic".

It wasn't until a few weeks later that I learned there was an actual relationship in air-to-air combat - The "vic formation."

info and pictures about vic formations:
http://www.duxford-wing.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=60&Itemid=86 and http://www.webshots.com/search?query=VIC-+Formation

Turned out to be a great name (IMO). It has relevance to air combat, it's short, it's easy to say, and easy to remember.

When I left flight school the callsign I was given was "Boots," because I was the only member of my class who was never hit on inspection for unshiny boots. I was Boots for most of my career.

During my first trip to Afghanistan, I flew a load of wounded Marines to a hospital ship. One of those Marines' mothers got her whole town together and wrote my CAG bunches of letters saying I was their unit's guardian angel. They made a little white flag with angel wings and a halo and hung it on the back of my chair in our squadron's ready room, and my name changed to "Angel Boots". After that, whenever a pilot on my boat flew critically wounded grunts to saftey the flag would get moved to their chair and they would become "Angel Whatever":

"Angel Hal"
"Angel Oak"
"Angel Ranger"
"Angel Sooner"
"Angel Mach"

etc. etc.

After the flag was on my chair a while, the "Boots" fell out of use and "Angel" stuck. We still passed the flag around, and they were still doing it when I left. When I got moved to a different boat for OIF-1 I went back to using just Boots.

Hunter is my middle name. I thought it sounded kind of badass. It didn't all fit in the game.

In warbirds 1997  , when I got some experience, I found out that hovering over own field helping out those who where chased back to own field was rather a lucruative way getting easy kills and also gave you a  reuptation saving those poor souls chased back :)

before 'save' (1996) I used the name 'kaka' (swedish for cookie).

Kilo short for kilogram the base unit of mass in the international system of units it equals 2.2046 pounds, and 2 because  I like 2.

I thought it was easy and I liked the the fact it was the base unit. :D

I used to race home from school to watch Rat Patrol, us kids would talk about the show the next day.  I saw it was in reruns on TVLand, got so exited, watched half an episode.  Some things are better left as memories.  I couldn't believe how bad it was!

Greebo is a character in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels which I was reading in 2000 when I signed up to AH. He's an evil tempered one eyed housecat who beats up the local wolves.

IIRC it was a 3rd or 4th choice as the other names I tried had already been taken. Still, it has become rather appropriate as the Hellcat is my ride of choice.:)

SZD-30 Pirat was the first single seater glider I've flown and to this time it's my favorite. PX painted on vert stablilizer and rudder are the competition markings of the one I used to fly most often, also used as its R/T callsign.

Becinhu
I used to play a MMORPG called Dark Age of Camelot.  SInce I have no imagination I would create a character and hit the generate name key until I got one that looked decent and didn't have 10 consonants in a row.  It became ironic when the game creators included emotes in the game, on of which was "beckon".  SO...since this toon was an assasin and could become "invisible" I could taunt people and freak them out since they couldn't see me.  The name became "bec in hu" as in beckon you.  I started this game several years ago and since I have no imagination I just stuck with the same name.  People started pronouncing my name "be c in hu" as in Be seeing you.  Most of my ingame friends just call me B for short.  Besides "evilpinkfluffybunny" was too long....

I've had the handle "Slowhand" for many years, both riding Harleys and online, which was originally given to me in reference to the Pointer Sisters song.  However, it also fit as I was a musician and definitely into Eric Clapton.

When I came on AH, "Slowhand" was taken and I didn't want a number copy.  So having been a long time participant in the bar scene over the years, I remembered a drink made with "Sloe Gin".  Just took and used that to come up with "Sloehand".

Can't tell you how many times in my first two years I got PM'ed with... "are you the Slowhand, I remember from so-and-so?"  Never did meet the other Slowhand, but he sure was popular.

The first name I ever chose was ZXer. I hung around with a bunch of guys who liked to ride, most of which rode one version or another of the Kawasaki ZX models. Mine was a 10 but was definitely not my first bike. This thing was a monster. It was big and fast and I loved it. After a couple of years of that I went back to the much more nimble 750's. I ended up crashing the ZX around a corner at the woods wearing a brand new set of leathers I purchased just days before.

This was my 1st bike. It was the 2nd fastest production bike that year. A 1982 Honda V45 750 S Saber. Used to blow the side panels off it going so fast. It was supposed to go 140 mph but I could not get it going any faster than 136. Mine was all Black
(http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery/Honda%20VF750%20Sabre%2082.jpg)

My third and last bike was probably my favorite.

A 1992 Honda VFR 750F  ...I learned to do tricks on that one and only had one minor accident.

I was into Jap bikes for a long time and had a helluva good time scraping pegs with friends. By the time I was about through with it I had lost a couple of good friends to stupid mistakes.

I really miss it bad but have not rode since 1998. I'll probably end up riding again but not the way I used to. I'm to old for that now  :frown: (http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x279/dogwood_03/Bike.jpg)

Least that's what i tell myself.

Well, since it's raining, I guess I'll go online tonight and you'll meet me there. Don't count on me helping you out of trouble, I'm not capable.

Over a decade ago I needed a nick for a net auction service. I had been working as a business-to-business sales representant for a long time, so I chose a name describing my uber salesman skills. Since then I have sold items at the mentioned service about a dozen times, making a total of way below 100 euros... A couple of years after that I was introduced to AH, and since I'm lazy, I used the same nick for the same reasons. Funny enough, some people in our Finnish AH-community use the nick rather than my real name although we have become family friends. I've even heard one local fellow pilot referring to me by my nick for his business associates!

Hm how did HitM come about?  Well it was born out of frustration.  Those who have crossed my path know I'm not the most accurate with my Gunnery. It was even worse in AirWarrior I couldn't hit anything; unless I got lucky.  Still frustrated a bit with my aim but it's because I'm close enough to scare but it's still hitting air.  So to remind myself then and now I chose something that rhymed with Hit him; HitM (HitEm was already taking.)

Now dropping bombs I'm fairly good at.

When I was in middle school, I was one of the bigger kids in my class. The running joke was that it sounded "like thunder" as I walked by due to my huge feet(size 8 back then). Also, if anyone has been to south Louisiana, you know that our accent is rather unusual. People around here pronounce words that end w/ "-er" like its ends with "a".  IE "water" sounds like "wata".  add that to my initials JB  and you have ThundaJB.

Way back in AH1 I was Tern named after the Osprey bird of prey, but few folks understood that connection.  So a year into the game I changed to Spotter because I could tell what planes were around well before they were in icon range.

AHII came along about the time my eye sight changed and I went with Odee.  Just another mutt in the air.

After meeting a P-51 pilot at The Gathering of Eagles in 2007, I changed it to ESears in honor his name, Elmo Sears.  Seems we had a destiny of sorts since my preferred nose art is the flag draped damsel "Maiden America", and his WW2 pony was named "American Maid" done in flag colors.

And now you have.... the rest of the story.  Good day.

Twelve (TWELVE!?! OMG!) years ago when I started playing WarBirds 1.xx the game had just switched from 4 character call signs to 6 character ones, if you had less than six characters a dash was used as a place holder.  I tried choosing various player IDs but it seemed everything was taken.  It might have been indigestion but I suddenly thought of the greasy spoon truck stop I had eaten at that day (Jocko's Restaurant) and typed in 'jocko-' and it was accepted.  When AH1 started up I decided to check it out and logged in as 417jocko (417 RCAF was my squad in WB).  Ended up taking a hiatus from online flying for a few years but signed up with AH2 just over a year ago and here I still am.  <S>
