Post by: betty on April 27, 2009, 11:43:11 AM
Question...what was it that they found? My mom called me the other day saying the found a WWII plane in the Pacific Ocean and were able to pull it out of the water in one piece. I have tried to find the news broadcast that she seen but was not able to find it so far. Any one know anything bout this?

In one of the last issues of Pacific Fishing there's an article about them finding a ww2 sub (uss grunian (sp?) off of Adak island. The son of someone on the sub chartered the F/V Aquilla to go looking, and after two years they found it.

Not a plane, but recent, ww2, and the pacific...  ;)

I think it is spelled Grunion. The sons of the skipper had been researching for years, and searching for a couple of years when they thought they figured out where it was. They eventually got sonar images, and then finally a photos from an unmanned vehicle.

She's not one of the women on my last flight to Chicago who looked at the cloud shadows on Lake Michigan and asked with a totally straight face "Are those whales?" is she?

You know I use the term "LoL" rather liberally but I rarely actually laugh out loud.  This is on of those rare instances. :lol

Just watched the Donkey film, the internets made me lol twice in 15 minutes.  Pretty good day except that I was eating while watching the film, and long after Donkey was down Russheim busted out one last "mayday" and I almost choked while laughing.

Did you mention that there aren't any whales in the Great Lakes, and that those things she saw were "Nessie's" and "Champ's" kin on migration?

If you happen to live in central Florida near Titusville or are visiting the Kennedy Space Center, there is the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum, http://www.vacwarbirds.org/ (http://www.vacwarbirds.org/). (http://www.vacwarbirds.org/images/map.gif)
They have a wildcat that was pulled from Lake Michigan a number of years ago.  The raising was documented on WTTW, Chicago's PBS station, by one of the former host of the show "Wild Chicago" Will Klinger.  I don't remember all the details but I know after they finished restoration they found the pilot that crashed it during takeoff from one of the carriers and got him to sit in it for a photo op.  I believe he lost power during takeoff and belly flopped into the water right in front of carrier.  They used the pictures they took of the plane and more specifically the interior of the cockpit when they found it still underwater to exonerate the pilot from accusations of pilot error.  I am not sure if it is currently air worthy but I believe it was their goal to make it air worthy.

I had seen the episode way back when it was first run then promptly forgot about it until about 6 years ago when I was in Florida for a vacation and happened to come across it while visiting the museum on the way to the space center.  (I spent 6 hours at the museum and about 2 at the space center.  :P)

Here are some photos off of their website.

"Picture of Restoration of the Gruman Wildcat that was at the bottom of Lake Michigan for 50 years. Restoration is by the "Grumman Gremlins". Wildcat Coordinator Harold Larkin and the men are Grumman Retirees that worked on the aircraft during WWII. The project got started in 2000."

And here is a photo of me standing next to it in 2003 on that trip.
