is it true it went to 30k in 6 minutes?
doesnt seem possible
-
S/L climb was only about 3500 fpm with Combat Power (water injection) and it dropped off slightly with altitude. 20k in 6 minutes is closer to reality.
-
Well Zig, starting from 5k at max speed P47M can prolly zoom to ozone layer.
-
Sounds like that story about Bearcat pilots getting the "bends" from their planes rapid climb rate.
Uh huh.
Never heard the Me 163B pilots mention their blood boiling, and it went up fluff'n quick -
standing start to 40,000ft in 3.45 minutes, oh yeah! They did get "gas" though. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

I don't know anything about P47 climbing rates, but that sounds tad too fast?
At least P-47M was fast at level.. 470mph (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Why isn't it possible? Because the "C" and "D" models were climbing pigs?
Here,
"P-47M performance was as follows:
Max speed: 470-480 mph @ 28,500 ft. Climb, at max. gross weight (including three 75 gallon drop tanks): 4.9 minutes to 15,000 feet at 2,600 rpm (1700 hp). Reportedly, the "M" could reach 20,000 feet in 5.7 minutes at military power (2,100 hp @ 2,800 rpm). 20,000 feet in 4.75 minutes in WEP (2,800 hp @
2,800 rpm). This is with full internal fuel and ammo. No external stores or
drop tanks. In other words, normal load, clean configuration."

Westy you just showed why it isnt possible. To make the 30k/6min mark it would have to get from 20k to 30k in 1.25 minutes (8000fpm).
-
I didn't do the math but wasn't sure if it could reach 30k in 6 minutes. I knew there was no way a C or D could and that if the M could. I figured it was because the prior versions were such dogs at climbing that folks were sure the M could not possibly climb good at all.

If it maintained the average climb rate of @ 4210 fpm (the rate at WEP to 20k) it would take a hair over 7 minutes to reach 30k.
only a 1 minute exaggeration. Still ain't to shabby considering how heavy it it.
