I logged in this morning and found some squaddies in Blue arena. We took some P51s up and ran around at high speeds trying to shoot people down. Eventualy we pushed all the 20k+ cons down and circled off their base picking off anyone brave enough to fight us, although we missed most of our shots from laughing at some really disgracefull jokes. Finally we got overrun by spits and an la7s and had to high tail it home. I just thought to myself, man....If something in this game doesnt change soon I'm... just going to...play for as long as possible. Redtop has the most jokes but i think i capped the offensive jokes table today. 1 up to shameless joke from batfink, oh yes. (im not posting that film or half the squad would get banned). I ran a few mossie sweeps deffending a base from CV attack after which turned out to be quite fruitfull!
Then later i met up with BnZs in the DA and we decided to test The 190A5s performance with 4x20 copared to 2x20mm. We fought over the ocean at 10,000ft for an hour or so trying all the combinations of ammo loaded or ammo dumped aside from fighting with no ammo at all. He proved his point i think that above 6k or so the 4 gun A5 performs well enough to beat the 2 gun A5. The difference is so marginal but clearly still there and most noticable on the deck where there is no room to dive or regain lost energy. He shot me down a load of times in a 2x20mm only and dump the MGs fight although some of the fights lasted 10 mins or more.
Just today, nothing major. But it gets under my skin, the fun in this game these days. Anyone else having too much fun and just need to get it off their chest? Its so annoying being able to dogfight 90 odd WW2 planes against real people all over the world 24 hours a day 365 days a year, isnt it?

Yea i have had alot of fun aslo. I like how you are concentrating on the good not the bad. Its good to be an optimist. :aok

daaaamn, youre fast dude :O

Using furballers to take bases so i can hear them complain. :lol
A friendly attitude toward other players
Tries to not talk smack even if they deserve it... A rule I hold everywhere but in the DA
Help others in any way you can
Give Salute or some other form of congrats on a GOOD fight that's either won, or lost.....I forget to do this sometimes
Don't run from 1v1's
Don't fly at 20k looking to pick then once engauged run to deck for ack or cover.
Try to fight till dead, ...out of ammo, ...fuel or just damaged so bad it makes no sense to continue. I got a good score and don't work hard to get it. I hardly ever land proving that running from fights won't increase your skill or score.

Desire the kill so badly you can taste it, so badly that you put in the study and the time in practice until the flying and shooting is as natural and breathing, 'till the maneuvers become so concise and simple that those lacking eyes to see will say "So what?" because they can't see the blood, sweat, and tears that went into being a master of yourself and your environment in momentous milliseconds that decide all.
You don't have to give the other guy an even chance to survive or kill you, indeed it is better if you do not, the combat isn't truly pure unless all are trying to both kill (kill another manned machine that is) *and* survive. But strategy not JUST about winning using any means available, it is also about finding a way to survive and even win when no means are apparent.
Forget not your dignity as a predator though. You are a lion on the hill, a hawk in the sun, a wolf in the pack, a viper in the grass, not a buzzard fighting twenty other buzzards for a carcass.

Yeah I have so much fun from the highs that the lows do get under my skin. Especially given that they could be raised to beyond tolerable if only some players made a tiny effort. The way I dull that frustration is with token "kumbaya" relativism. It's sure to make a difference.

After getting hit in the turret of your T34 five times without taking damage, and hitting your opponent's once or twice to smoke his...three engagements in a row...and then taking him to the TA to show him how you did it.

Good gameplay means a furball where it's even odds, or to my disadvantage. I like it when both sides can climb out, not one side playing helicopter over the field. I guess good gameplay is where I'm getting shot at, as much as I'm shooting at them.

Well there's a lot more to talk about in defining bad game play opposed to good.
More people are quickly inclined to complain and ridicule than compliment or make any positive statements.
In general, it's going to be a short subject thread. Chances are it'll barely make it past the 1st page...... who wants to hear about good game play? :O
Heard a phrase on the news about truth, lies and gossip. Gossip and lie's can travel 1/2 way across the world before the truth decides to even put it's shoes on.

It was fun...Just about everytime I log in I have fun...the times I don't is because I wasn't really in the mood to play anyway. I logged in this morning to find 1 squaddie on and we defended a base til we couldn't anymore. We had a blast.
Good game play , Bad game play...it really all comes down to yourself. If ya don't like whats happening change places....don't like the land grab...don't play it...don't like furballing...find a base take and get busy. Don't feel like flying drive something. Do some gunning. Bomb the crap out of nothing. It's all in what each person puts in to it.
Having the great squaddies Ihave to fly with makes thinsg that much better. Not flying everyday and staying frustrated helps as well.

Sounds like you should be playing command and conquer, not a flight Sim.

Says you. Fighter and bomber tactics have always been about teamwork. The loose duece, finger four, close formation, all of it done in teams.

Defining good gameplay is like defining good dogfighting skills. Where do you start, how many different examples do you have to give before you have a bullet proof definition? Good gameplay has all actors having fun. It's directly corelated to fair odds, with a richness of tactical options, usually to good sportsmanship but also to benignly getting a raise out of the opponents and friendlies, to novelty... Etc.

I admit it, every time I up, I have fun - whether the fight is equal numbers or unequal it dont matter.
Sure, I whine at times, everyone does, but I have fun in my own little way.
Fun for me is to do what I want to do, when I want to do it - my ultimate favourite is defending against a cv attack, either in planes or in a gv, its all good.

I like it when you go off the beaten path and you get some good 1v1's out there away from the giant horde furball.
-
Flying with people you thoroughly enjoy (not like that silat) so that the horrible game play can be made light of.
-
I try to never whine, and never talk trash. The talking trash is something I'm really averse to.. burning bridges is a bad thing.. especially when one flies special events on a regular basis, and your enemy one week is your wingman the next..

Putting together a fighter sweep in the MA, and flying in a way that leaves you with little chance of death, no matter how organized or planned out just sounds lame to me. Maby not ever getting shot at is fun for you, but it's not for me. The only tactic that matters IMO is how do i get my nose behind your tail.
Typically the ones who find the most success in this game, are the ones who don't need to rely on others, and can get themselves out of any situation.
-
As long as you're having fun right =)
-
For me good gameplay is...
Flying together with squadies and helping each other out.
We (Loose Deuce) tend to fly together alot and its really nice to take off together and actually fly together to a combat area not just fight in the same area but actualy fight together. RTB as a group and do a fighting escape is great. Tow and roll in tow and roll in as you escape from combat is great.
Helping each other out creates a nice sence of purpouse to the fight.
For me its good gameplay to fly with Loose Deuce.
I dont know how we are as an experience to fight against and how our gameplay is experienced on the other side of the gun but I hope we are a pita because of our teamwork and no other reason. Because good gamplay in a mmo always has to mean good gameplay for both your self and your opponent. This is why I like the fact that we rotate sides.

Well he's from the muppets, not a very team oriented type squad. They can be found flying in 2-3 diff countries cannibalizing each other across the map. They normally just fly for themselves as far as I can tell... a loner squad I guess you could say. They're not really here to help anyone or try and improve game play but when they do hook up they can be devastating. At those times you'll normally find them on ch 200 posting insults and taunting remarks. Not exactly a good game play type squad hence the "you ought to be playing command and Conquer' statement. It's obvious he's got his own ideas of how it should be done and your right, it is a lonely way to play but he is good.
After making these statements, which i believe to be true, you can expect more Muppets to enter and the bashing will start. It's one of the few times you'll see them really come together.... here on the boards.
-
LOL What a great tactical move by A8TOOL. A totally inaccurate description from biased anecdotic evidence all wrapped up in self-excusing prediction that any following comments from said squad would be to bash him.
-
Muppets...They're not really here to help anyone
This is libelous crap. Muppets are continuously trying to help others and never turn down requests for help. Muppets are frequently contacted with training requests and spend much time in the DA/TA instructing people who want to learn. Agent has posted films for instructional purposes. So has moot and others. All of us frequently get ride along requests and we always oblige, patiently explaining things and answering questions.
For myself, I often get PM's as well, asking for advice/tips on flying the 51. I answer them all and explain as thoroughly as I am able. I lurk on the boards and offer my advise whenever I can.
You are way out of line, Tool.

Sunfan's comment may have been out of line, but to take his post (opinion) and lay it across the total "Muppet" squad, or any squad for that matter, was way off base.
Muppets as a "whole" are a fine squad and a fine bunch of guys.
-
I hardly ever see anything like this in the MA, in fact if you don't want anyone to join a mission just post one labeled "fighter sweep" mission sans ords, goons, or other aspects of land-grabbery. Most of the group efforts are about bombing/smash grabbing the surprised into oblivion, not controlling the airspace.

Being this thread is about good game play, I would have alot more fun if the collective skill level went up. The only way to get better is by getting shot at, You wont get shot at as much during a sweep, simple.

Even if we did fly the way your describing,(couldn't be farther from the truth) you can't argue that what we do has made us better that you will ever be at this game, so quit bashing success.
-
I like the multifaceted aspects of this game....when I quit having fun I log off and do something else...I like the fact that the creators of this game allow human nature to shape different scenarios every night even if the maps etc dont change. I like being ganged in a 3-4 v 1 because it feels so good to survive it.
I really like hunting the ch 200 mouths who perch up high and pad their k/d's while taunting others...that is my only guilty pleasure that is not helping my development as a human being :t

Just playing devil's advocate here.. These are all examples, not a definition. What is gameplay, and what makes it good rather than bad?
I think AH people generally fall into two categories: those who view it as a sport, and those who view it as a simulation. I fall into the first group, and so, for me, very personally, good game play is good sportsmanship rather than good simulation. Consequently I value pleasant conversation, balanced fights, and fair play in general. (I occasionally stumble, usually when the simulators have incensed me, which is hard to do.)
Those from the simulation camp will correctly note that these values do not accuratly portray WWII aerial combat. I respond that this is so, but combat for pleasure, P-51 v P-51 fights, take-an-airfield-with-10-soldiers captures, and war-without-death are hardly accurate, either.
- oldman
-
Would you believe me if I told you I take the sim part as a sport?
-
I've looked at it as: Those who play for score and rank, and those who play for sport and fun. Those who play for score/rank..........well you figure it out, they will do anything to get the kill right away it seems, you know immediately who's who @ first merge.
For the most part I've really never had a GOOD fight versus someone who, from all indications is playing for score. On the other hand, I've had what I would consider to be, some of my best flying against those who are willing to put some effort into it, get on your 6 and shoot ya down.
Overall I would say about 30-40 % of the time I find the good fights, the rest I just take with a grain of salt and move on.
-

That is not another USAAF P-51 I'm fighting....its a Me-209/Secret German prototype, etc...
It works if you squint your eyes and believe hard enough.
-
Liked your post Jdog. I see the 'grains of salt' as people i can vulch, ho, ram and cherry pick without remorse and do so accordingly. It's so much fun.
Honour in a dogfight is something i recognise when it is there. When the sentiment of the hour is purely my death or yours by any means, I'm adapting to it and getting on top of it before they give me a chance to have something to feel annoyed about.

You know, I normally refrain from that even when faced with it but... Yesterday I upped an Emil for fun at furball island and ended up on the deck with a 51D and a 1A, two planes that completely outclass me, and I ended up taking a HO from the Hog. I upped my little Emil again and the only thing better than watching that Hog spiral to the ground after I shot him in the face was getting the PM that said "Nice HO". :)

Aside from tools attempt to hijack this thread............
Ganked from wiki.......Gameplay includes all player experiences during the interaction with game systems, especially formal games.
As for what makes gameplay good....I would say players interacting in the game as intended by the developers without exploitation and in a fashion that allows for fair gameplay and a reasonable chance for all parties to succeed. Apart from playing within the boundaries, good gameplay should also include a sense of sportsmanship, enjoyable atmosphere between players, and a willingness between competing players to actively participate within the game as intended.
What I enjoy in AH....good fights, small or large, with friends. everything else is a far far second place.

Sorry Steve, It's was an observation and was commenting only on Sunfans quote giving my best guess/opinion as to why he might say that.
When I said "They're not really here to help anyone " I was referring to base takes, strategic jabo/fighter sweeps and group type efforts ect. There is no doubt a few of you are very willing to help in the way of training and many appreciate that... some greatly.
These are things that do improve game play and I wish I would have struck that part of the sentence and rephrased the rest.
Furballers, Dog Fighters and Cherry Pickers are words used in your avatar's to describe who you are as a group. It's no secret that the muppets could care less about base taking or flying together as a group. As I said though, when you do get together your devastating.
:salute
Edit: The rest stays... heheh
-
. It's no secret that the muppets could care less about base taking or flying together as a group.
Well this is largely correct. We do some stuff that is team play as a biproduct of the way we like to play, though. Often we fly into the hordes and this means a lot of base defense. I only sometimes up from a capped base but the other muppets do it with frequency. Sure, our motivation is to get in fights but it does amount to base defense and thereby, team play. Of course, mission busting is always fun!
Consider this: While we may not be running buffs and goons, we still do our small part to help the team by flying into the biggest concentration of bad guys we can find(yes, with questionable results lol)
Sure we have our warts: some of us, including me, blow smoke on 200 too much sometimes. I don't blow smoke on 200 for some noble purpose like others, I whine. Hey, I'm flawed. What can I say? :D
You may not believe this but: I do run supplies now and then.... once in a rare while when I happen to be down and the call comes. Shawk would vouch for me were he to read this. Also, I love to go after bombers. Technically, isn't this team play? :salute
As I said though, when you do get together your devastating.
Thank you. :aok

I was bish at tank town last night and I was witness to lots of crappy game play. There was much ganging, hoing, picking, and running.
But there were a couple bright spots in the wee hours of the morning...
At one point in time TT suddenly turned into a ghost town, it was just Scotch and myself on bish and Strong10 on the rooks and we got to get a couple good 1v1's in.
Then a bunch of bish upped and headed over to the rook field and a bunch of rooks upped to defend and it turned into a big cluster you know what, then the rooks moved over our field in force. I figured since I was going to get gangbanged by spixteens that I might as well try and earn some perks for my frustration and upped an Emil and grabbed out to the north. I tried skirting the fight to lure just one guy out away from the pack and a Spit8 came my way, went a couple turns, then dove back into the fray and I stayed high. I noticed a con coming in from the extreme north on radar and went to check it out, it was someone in a Jug coming to pork our field and he just went on past so I followed him back to the field. By this time the rook herd was getting kinda thin and I managed to get a Spit16 isolated and down him. By the time he was down there was only one spit left and my bro 8spade was on him. DMACE was moving in to jump on the Spit but Spade called him off and he obliged, and in a few seconds the Spit was down and our airspace was clear. Even though I was out of cannon I wasn't satisfied with just one kill and had about 1800 little bb's left so I started grabbing toward the middle of the island. Dead center of the island I found a Mossie more or less co-alt and he engaged me. I quickly got him saddled when DMACE called that he was coming to help. I don't use vox so when I saw a brief opening I typed "I got him" on range and ACE acknowledged my call off. Spade repeated over range vox for others to stay out and the Mossie and I spiraled down to the deck while I was sandblasting his paint off with my MG's. Once we got to the deck the Mossie was out of alt and options so he headed straight for his V-Base ack. Spade called out "Oh man now he's gonna ack drag you". I was committed to the kill one way or another so I followed him in. Now here's the highlight of my evening, one of the other guys, either DMACE or Slayya said "I'll take care of that". And while I followed the Mossie around in his ack spraying bb's wildly across the sky they dove in and deacked the field so I could finish him in peace!
-
An intangible feeling of suspense. A rush of adrenaline from a good fight.
The example in mind was a series of three or four 1v1s in quick succession just off a friendly field. I was in a Spit VIII. Dano, of Army of Muppets, was in a 109G-14.
I went in thinking that the Spit was obviously superior. Dano schooled me in low speed scissors, killing me two or three times. I finally prevailed on my nth attempt, probably after he was out of cannon.
Salute to Dano for hanging around, and for his high level of proficiency in the 109G-14.
Honorable mention to a new player and new squad mate, Arson, for complying with my request to stay out of the fight in his P-51.
-
I HATE suspense. I love the smug calm certainty of "the poor gomer never stood a chance". Only reason my incredibly lazy self practices as much as I do is to make the outcome more certain in more situations.
-
I love suspense ina good fight but if I can avoid it and just kill them quickly I will do. Talking furballs or horde fights i mean.

Afight where i am shaking like a virgin on a troop train . That's good game play .
