Plus good exercise getting up and down the hill.
Lepus europaeus :) Tastes like beef, I mince the leg meat, fry or grill the back steaks :)

1/10th of the fat of beef is very little. And a pure lean beef muscle holds 20% of high quality protein. I guess the 10c is for the ammo.....

There’s a hair on your hare in the second pic.
Otherwise that is some good looking meat.

Nah... .22 rounds are far less than a dime a piece.
Decent tasting meat, lot better than squirrel. Easier to clean too. Not near as good as a wild porker though, and those things are numerous enough to be a menace where I live anyway.

Twice the protein? Hmm. I never noticed that. That's a lot.
We sold a little bit of it at our butcher shop...

Err US 5cents for the ammo, but I use the good stuff :)
Title: Meat from hares, low cholesterol.
Personal Authors: Sportelli, G. F.
Author Affiliation: Dipartimento di Produzione Animale, Università di Bari, Bari, Italy.
Editors: No editors
Document Title: Rivista di Coniglicoltura
Abstract:
Meat composition was compared in lambs, kids, wild boar, hares, broiler chickens, turkeys and pheasants, with reference to protein, fat and saturated and unsaturated fatty acid content. The results confirmed the relatively low fat (2.37%) and high protein (24.75%) content of hare meat, which is comparable to pheasant meat with 1.60% fat and 24.00% protein content. Hare meat is also relatively low in saturated fatty acids.
(OK not double the protein, but I used a little artistic license to round it up :D )

Apparently game meat is a good source of omega-3's too.
As for the hair on the hare, well the meat was washed then boned, the leg meat gets minced. The back steaks get marinated and fried.
The funny thing is NZ has a real problem with hare and rabbits as pests. And most NZ'ers turn their nose up at rabbit or hare meat. Yet it turns out to be one of the healthiest meats around.

Fine looking table fare you have there. I'm going to have to get a few myself this summer.
Until then i'll have to "get by" with some of this though:

Meat Calories Fat (g) Cholesterol (mg) Protein
Elk 146 1.9 73 30.2
Chicken, no skin 190 7.4 89 28.9
Turkey, no skin 170 5.0 76 29.3

Bad thing about elk is you only get to hunt them here in the states for a short period of time

No fat content in the meat. Though there is a little underneath the hide. Anyway, that is why you also shoot the pig, have some grease to cook your rabbits in.

68valu venison is on my target list too. Had a wee crack at some late last year. Just a warm up. Waiting for the roar to end then I'll be out again (I'm after meat not trophies).
-
Ya Ive been a-shootin critters, gutting them, and eating them since I was a little kid. Good stuff.
-
Yeah used too til I was about 18, then my location, lack of shooting spots, weapon costs, and gun licensing put me off for a bit. But I needed to get fit, and gym's don't motivate me, whereas chasing small furry animals and killing them does. So a friend set me up with some farmers near where I live. I have to hike over a 900 foot hill to get to my happy hunting ground, then it's all hilly as well - so I get a fairly decent workout. I was pretty proud late last year, I did a 14km hike into a hunting spot with 20kg of gear. Went from totally unfit to that in six months :)

You don't starve, but rather there's nothing to dissolve the protein into and it begins to poison you.
