Iowa class battleship would be nice for CV escorts.
Agreed :aok
-
When they add the B-29 with a reduced atom bomb, then okay, let the Iowa BB be made for AH.

-
That's a whole lot more 5 inch proxy rounds to deal with guys.
Think they mounted 20 of them in twin turrets.

yes, but it would look more like this: :D

I doubt they had a helicopter landing platform back in the 40s :D

That there's a runway for scout planes, pal.

Didn't it have 14" instead of 8" guns :pray

They should add the Yamamoto, bizmark and Tirpitz

Also would be nice for ANTI-CV escorts :aok

Armament (Main Battery): Nine 16"/50 guns in three triple turrets
Armament (Secondary Battery): Twenty 5"/38 guns in ten twin mountings (ten guns on each side of the ship).
What town?

Two thumbs Up! :aok :aok
-
WWII era battleships had 9 16' guns. The WWI era Dreadnots had 12 12'inchers. (Nevada, Arizona, etc)

There was a lot more variation than that. Also Nevada and Arizona had 14" guns, not 12" inch. Dreadnought, built in 1906, had twn 12" guns.
-
What was the range on the 16" guns found on the Iowa Class?
-
I seemed to recall them being accurate to around 20 miles, but I found two sources that said max range was 23 and 26, respectively. Regardless, quite a distance.
-
It's amazing the junk that sticks in your mind for years. I remembered
reading that USS Alaska BC-1 mounted 12 inch guns during WW2.
Found a neat photo from Norfolk with it tied up alongside an Iowa
class BB.

Yea the battle cruisers were generally less heavily armed and armored, but much faster and more maneuverable than their battle ship brethren. The Guam was an upgrade of the Alaska BC, which came out a bit later. Good looking pic...anyone recognize what kind of flat-top is in the lower left there?

Independence class CVL? Too big to be a CVE, and the bow's not right for an
Essex.
-
The bow doesn't look right for a CVL either. (USS Independence Completed '43)

It could have been the USS Langley (AV3), but the photo is a year after the Langley was sunk by the Japanese.....

Then again, I'm sure there were other CV to AV conversions during the war.
-
Yea I think it must be some sort of conversion...doesn't look at first glance like any of the line-produced CV or CVL's. Those tugs are going to town on it :)
-
USS Croatan (CVE-25)
(there's a big 25 on the flight deck)

What was the range on the 16" guns found on the Iowa Class?
Well over 40,000 yards. And the thing is the Iowa class BBs had such superb radar and fire control that she could hit at incredable distances, far farther then any other BB. The Yank AP shells were also the best in the war and were excellent penetrators from long distance.
While the Yamato had larger guns, 18" mains, they really didnt help her much compared to the Yank 16"s. The 18" guns wore their barrels down a lot faster and didnt yield any advantage at the typical long ranges BB vs BB fights started at. Also the Jap shells were far inferior to the Yank ones. The Iowa armor belt was superb. The Iowas were faster, had better AA gunnery, and Yank damage control was without equal.
Add my :aok It would be fun to have Iowas to gun from. Control their numbers but it would be a fun addition.

You know how much of a pain in the bellybutton it would be to sink one of these things. With all the anti-buff dweebs crying over the B-29, imagine someone bouncing around the MA with this puppy.
"Are you a F#%kin' ass? Silly typhy, your weapons cannot harm me. Don't you know who the F%@k I am? I'm the Missouri, B%!$h!"
hope someone knows where that came from....
-
Just to add fuel to the fire why don't we add pcoket battleships like the Graf Spee/Admiral Scheer so we can have CV hunter killer groups????? :devil
