Title: GV Supplies Should Refuel Planes
Post by: shotgunneeley on May 05, 2009, 04:15:29 PM
If it works for a GV, why not for a ditched bird?

quite a few times I'll be coming in from a long bombing run on fumes with the base just within sight. Just when I think I'm going to make the last drops of fuel in the tank run dry and I come up short of the runway by 200 feet. Its a sinking feeling when all you need is that little bit of concrete to land your 3+ kills and bring your drones home, but instead you have to settle for a "ditch"

Why not make it possible for a friendly GV to meet you out at the edge of the base with a tank of gas (GV supply) for your stranded buff? I dint think running out of fuel in a GV is ever a problem but it sure is in planes.

No, thank you.

Logistics.

Pilots aren't mechanics.  Even aircraft that made emergency landings in occupied Europe returning to England were left while the pilot was flown back to their base.

Aircraft that were serviced were a low priority, taking hours if not days to get them back on their way.

I dont think you'd see much utilization of such a feature.

I know how the discussion on my squad VOX would go.   :D

"[expletive], guys, someone give me a [expletive] round of supplies over here?"

"Where?"

"A123."

"Whats the [expletive] problem?

"I ran out of gas and Im like... [expletive] feet short of the runway."

"...you bothered to land?"
"DWEEB!"
"HAHAHAHA!"
"Up another plane [expletive]."
"[expletive] dweeb!  HAHAHA!"
"What the [expletive] dude..."

"Thanks, guys."

Does the rearm pad already refill the tanks on the planes?

Yes, but you have to make it there mom.  The op is talking about not making it to the field at all.  What we call a ditch.

Only if you can taxi to it.  :D

Such a system might be handy for guys flying CAP over GV bases. Some guys might be able to take back off. It would be interesting to watch.  :devil

Considering most planes could land without runways, provided it wasnt rough or hills could be repaired by a sall ground crew.

Then again, i don't think people would want to sit and wait 3 1/2 hours to get 15 gallons into a tank to fly home on.

From a historical standpoint, you'd be hard pressed to find aviation-grade 100LL on a tank base. Tanks didn't run on 100LL, even the radial powered Shermans and Stuarts ran on 93 octane.

If you've ever flown and landed a real aircraft, finding some smooth grassy place to set down isn't usually high on the list of priorities, especially in a WW2 era fighter with 85mph+ stall speeds.

We've all come up 4 feet short of the runway. I don't necessarily like the 'pavement rule', but that's the way it is. Personally, I think coming down within the base boundaries should be classified as a landing...after all, any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

It's really too uncommon of a scenario, falling short of the runway on your last drop of fuel, that is. At least once you start paying attention to fuel more. There's no real harm in falling short of the runway, sure it may be annoying when you have some kills to land and want the attention, but 5 seconds after your ditch you will probably forget all about it, up a new plane and vow to watch your fuel settings a little closer. I don't see how letting a few fuel deprived score junkies here and there get their name in lights fix would improve gameplay, and if something doesn't improve gameplay I wouldn't want to see it implemented.

I'm certain a jeep couldn't carry enough fuel to refuel a P-51, not to mention the difference between aviation fuel and tank fuel...

It's a video game, it's not like you just crashed a multi-million dollar jet in real life... Re-up and move on..

First of all, GV, stands for GROUND VEHICLE, your so called "ditched bird" is an A/C, and A/C stands for AIRCRAFT. See the difference?

You want to get your name in lights?

Then take enough fuel. Fly in a way to make it home, undamaged. Get OUT of the fight when you can no longer CONTINUE fighting (too many quake-playing spittards that buzz around until they're out of gas then glide after that point, spraying at everything they see).

The point of having landings ONLY count when you're on the runway was specifically decided by HTC to make it WORTH landing. If you can have a safe landing anywhere, if you can get "supplies" to a downed plane anywhere, then landing itself has no purpose and no meaning.

I quite like feeling like I *earned* my landings, thank you very much. Even if I have no kills, but am shot to hell, 1 wing gone, no oil, missing an elevator or flaps, I take quite a lot of joy in setting a plane down and ending flight safely on the runway.

"no thank you" to plane supplies/repairs.
