play it back before the explosion, it looks like something falls out of the sky and hits the road- a mortar perhaps?

It's not a mortar, you see it again at around 9 or 10 seconds.   It appears that it is on the windshield.

Plus from what I've seen and heard of mortars, they're not going to penetrate the ground deep enough to cause the soil and road to, "bubble up."
