Title: Good single player ww2 flight sim?
Post by: jdbecks on May 09, 2009, 04:10:48 AM
Hey everyone,

dont worry Im not going to stop playing Aces High2, but I was  just wondering what  good single player WW2 flight sims there are that have a good campaign mode? I have looked at Battle of Brittan 2 wings of victory, that looks like it might have an intresting campaign mode?

cheers

Jon

Il-2 is pretty impressive. Aren't they about to publish a BoB version?

Il2 will disappoint you some... AHII does so many things better than I have no doubt that the HTC team could produce a superior stand alone game....but Il2 is worth the 20 bucks or whatever I paid for the last version.

Falcon 4.0 had a pretty big following.

I got the latest copy of IL2 1946,but it seems to not like Vista 64 or any 64 bit OS.
Apperently my copy has copywrite protection on it,all non US versions do and I cant get it to load past startup screen.

IL2's solution, use some pirated software to work around it,mind you they dont publicly tell you this on their forum,no instead they pm you this imformation and even direct you to sites that have said software.

I'd of returned the game if I could but no returns on open software..... Ubisoft.... what a piece of work.

It would be simple to post a fix for this but nooooo, force them to use pirated software, why pay a company to supply copywrite protection and the tell a customer to use pirated SW to make it work!

Ubisoft needs a name change, maybe "theybsoftinthehead" would be more appropiate

Il-2 is pretty. It has a great damage model. I like the complex engine management. That's about it.

Sound effects suck. Overall flight model sucks. Aircraft modeling is VERY generic (EVERY plane has the exact same four flap positions: Up, Combat, Takeoff, Landing). Engine overheats are overdone. Feeling of speed and even ALTITUDE is non-existent. It took them FOREVER to fix the overdone recoil of the US .50cal that would yaw the plane all over the place. The PTO campaign is half-assed at BEST. Ubisoft had to throw in all these bizarre Russian and German superplanes that didn't even make it off the DRAWING BOARD historically and about a hundred Bf-109 variants, but specifically refused to add the F4U-4 despite a LOT of posts requesting it.

Engine overheats are overdone.

Thus is revealed the problem of "realistic" engine modeling. Realistically, you probably ain't gonna blow a new P&W R-2800 even if you run it at WEP for the average half hour or so it takes to play some, land/get shot down, got get a coke, and get your "new" engine. Effectively, players would have unlimited WEP in many planes if the engine modeling *was* realistic. Il2 solves this problem by making the engines fail on an absurdly shortened timescale. AHII solves this problem by forcing you stay within published limits for WEP usage, and IMO this is the better solution.

Yep.  PS3 and Xbox 360 release only with two types of flight model, arcade and 'realistic'.

Guess AH2 really doesn't have much competition anymore, other than mod's made for Il2 then, eh?

If you don't mind crappy graphics (by today's standards) and a mildly less than realistic flight model......European Air War from Microprose.  I think it's abandonware but I could be wrong.

Aces of the Pacific is still the best WWII air combat sim ever.

EAW was a really cool game.  There are some mods out there that do improve the graphics some but yeah, they are really outdated.

Well I got IL2 1946 and I did not really like it that much, the sound effects suck especialy when using the guns and thats quite a big thing for me lol, I dont really like the whole feel to the game, Im no expert with flight models Im still a noob to flight sims but AH2 feels so good, its probley because ive only played online games but I found the AI far to easy.

I got battle of Brittan 2 and its fantastic, the graphics are good and the game feels good.

Last post on the Oleg Maddux thread was December 31, 2008.

Personally, I'm wondering if BoB isn't just going to turn into Vaporware.
