Title: need new video card?
Post by: flatiron1 on May 10, 2009, 04:55:06 PM
Skuzzy says my NVIDIA GeForce 8300 GS is not sufficient to run 1024 textures which I had mine set at. He said I should run the minimum 256 textures with my current card and running max textures could be part of my disco problem.

One thing that I will say if I am around a lot of flames(burning fuel refinery) things do not work very well.

Best Buy has a PNY Verto GeForce 9600GT 512 MB and GDDR3. on sale for 75.00 regular 150.00. Price seems right but is this what I really need. Keep in mind not a computer genius here.

Here is what I have now

From what you posted I'm not sure what you have but you will need a PCIe x16 slot for the video card.

As long as you have that then post your power supply watts and how many amps it has on the 12V rail(s) (should be listed on a sticker on the PSU).  You may have to upgrade that too to power the card.

I just picked up the MSI 1 gig 4830, the top card on the list, I am seeing FR's of 226, at the FSO, when we all took off FR was 180, Titanic Tuesday is when I had the most Pauses, now its sweet, none at all, plus this card draws very low amounts of power and is supposedly an overclockin beast, mine is not though. not a bad price at all, it comes in a deal with memory, 2 sticks of 2 gig, thats how I picked it up :D

ok the box for the card says i need minimum, 400 watt power supply with minimum 12 volt current rating of 26amps. So its either get new power supply or lesser video card. Anything I need to know about power supplies?

I'd go with an upgradeable ps like the PC Power and Cooling Quad 750 watt.

The thing to think about here is what would possibly be your next computer assuming you would build. Other than that I might go with a 500 watt PC power and cooling PS.

One thing that crossed my mind was what if you go with an I core 7 or a higher end video card. I'm not sure about the PS requirements there.

Buy a power supply that exceeds the minimum recommendations by a fair amount (20% or more).  You can add the 12V voltages across rails if it's a multi-rail PSU.  Make sure it's 80+ certified and tested for 100,000+ hours.  This will at least get you into the range of better quality PSU's.

When you've chosen a few that you're considering do a reality check to see if the numbers are being fudged or are reasonable.  V x A x efficiency = W.  None will be perfect but those that come closer are likely better.

Also look at the power connectors to make sure there are the right ones for your current and future needs (floppy, SATA, molex and especially 6 pin, 8 pin or 6 + 2 pin GPU connectors and 20, 24 0r 20 + 4 pin main power connectors).

Better brand names include PC Power & Cooling, OCZ and Seasonic among others.

Remember, especially with PSU's, you get what you pay for.

If you want to go to a lesser video card check the 9500 GT's at newegg.  Get a GDDR3, 512 Mb with the fastest memory clock you can find.  It'll run the game fine but may still require a PSU upgrade.

If you try to run one of these cards with what you have you'll likely burn up either the card or the PSU.

One final note:  Dell, at least in the past, has liked using proprietary power connectors for their PSUs.  Make absolutely sure that you have a generic PSU connection at the motherboard before buying a new PSU.  If you don't I know that PC Power and Cooling makes a 500W PSU specifically for Dell machines.

well I am having a problem finding the system requirements for these online purchased video cards. (the stuff they put on the box). In particular the required power supply.

I would go with the assumption that they require 400 Watts of power with at least 20 Amps on the 12+ V Rail.

If you're shopping at newegg on the lower left side of the product page click manufacturer info then click product information page or just go to the manufacturer's web-site and look up the product number.

I have that same computer from dell.  The dell forums claim you can use any ATX power supply.  Just make sure it has at least 4 SATA connectors.  I'm looking at the OCZ modular ps, I think it is the 600W at Newegg.  I'm considering a 9800GTX+ video card, which has been used successfully in an Inspiron 530, according to the forum.  Good luck and post what you wind up with.  I'm a few months out from an upgrade, so I'll be interested in seeing what you get.
