For the evil Spit 16 crowd. Just to clarify the point. Can you ID what types of Spits these are?

beats me, but I want to know how many perkies i have to pay for the beer keg load option in pic #2.
-
Number 3 is a Spit 14......the 5 bladed prop is a good giveaway.
-
No. 2 is delivering beer to the front!!
-
Are they all MK16s?
:noid
-
2nd and 6th look like MkXIII, high altitude wings, the clipped or a little harder because from MK V on up could have the clipped wings. the color picture is probably a MK XVI
-
they are all very unusual because they are alone
-
2nd one is a mkIX flown by johnnie johnson
-
There are 2 16s in the mix. So far no one has ID'd one. Johnnie Johnson's bird is not one pictured. There is no XIV in the pictures either.

1st: Spit IX
2nd: Spit IX
3rd: Spit XVI
4th: Spit XII
5th: Spit IX
6th: Spit IX
7th: Spit IX
8th: Spit IX
Last pic: Spit XVI
I would have figured they would all be Spit XIIs ;)

Close but you missed on one. Look closer :)
-
I'm expecting a good guide on proper identification when someone gets it all right!
-
Mk 262
-
Spit Bernard?
Suppose you could tell which is which by gun placement and wings clipped or not.
#4 looks odd though.

Brits were running low on high-octane fuel, and modified spitfires to fly on beer (which is just as well, since their beer tastes awfull)
-
Quick glance, I'll look closer later - after work ;)
1) LF IX
2) LF IXe
3) XVI
4) XII
5) LF IXe (Russians got mainly V,s and LF IX)
6) IXe
7) XVI
8) VIII
9) XVI (e wing and hardpoints give it away)
Bit hard to pick up wing bulges etc on some pics.
-
the colour pic is the BBMF's IX. how many of the IXs were clipped?
-
I have no idea, but I like the keg option! :aok

Spitfire LFIXe. Only difference from an LFXVIe would be the small rudder on this one. Same wing and hard points. Merlin 66
(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s199/guppy35/PT961.jpg)
Full span wing Spitfire LFIXe. Again identical to the LFXVIe but with a Rolls Royce Merlin 66 instead of a Packard Merlin 266
(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s199/guppy35/Spitfire1.jpg)
Ahh the evil Spitfire LFXVIe with clipped wings, Merlin 266 but identical to a Spitfire LFIXe
(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s199/guppy35/Spitfire2.jpg)
Spitfire XII, just cause it's my favorite
(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s199/guppy35/EBB1.jpg)
Spitfire LFIXe supplied to the Russians. Identical to the LFXVIe outside of the engine maker
(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s199/guppy35/Spitfire3.jpg)
Full span wing Spitfire LFIXe with the same hardpoints etc of the XVIe and identical performance
(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s199/guppy35/Spitfire4.jpg)
Clipped wing Spitfire LFIXe of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. She's a D-Day vet
(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s199/guppy35/spitcliped.jpg)
Put this one in for Kev. Spitfire LFVIIIc with clipped wings. Merlin 66 vs the 266 of the LFXVIe
(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s199/guppy35/onemore.jpg)
And an exampe of some of the few Spitfire LFXVIe that had full span wings.
Bottom line is the Spitfire LFXVIe and the Spitfire LFIXe are identical with only the location of the engine production giving them a different designation as the engine performance was the same.

i dunno, but from the looks of the beer kegs on the second pic, that dude needs serious help with his problem. :rofl
-
nevermind :rofl

8 out of 9, not bad for a quick glance.
XII nearly had me fooled until I noticed the retractible tailwheel and asymetric coolers under the wings :)
.
VIII was tricky also being clipped.
-
holy spitfires :O
I nearly jizzed my pants! great Pics Dan :aok

#8 is a Mk VIII

#8 is a Mk VIII
I can hardly tell one Spit from another. I researched them all based on Serial Numbers or Squadron Codes. Should have known it was a Mk VIII from the bigger Vertical Stabilizer.

No, the tail wheel doors showing that it had a retractable tail wheel. Mk IX and XVIs didn't have that feature and it lacked the Griffon engine bulges of the Mk XII and Mk XIV, or five bladed prop of the Mk XIV. It is very unlikely to find a Mk VII with clipped wings as it was for high altitude.

See? I can't tell.

Aileron length is also a clue.

the one third from bottom is clearly a Spit21V MK356

VIII and XVI were fitted with the broad chord rudder (bigger vertical stabiliser) from the start, the later LF IXs were also fitted with it.
So it's not a definate pointer to it only being a Mk VIII.
Only the VIII, XII and XIV had retractible tailwheels.
So had to be one of them.
Wasn't a XIV - didn't have 5 blade prop.
Wasn't an XII - Only home units flew the XII.
Had to be a very unusually clipped VIII.
