Design and development
The Tu-2 was tailored to meet a requirement for a high speed bomber or dive-bomber, with a large internal bombload, and speed similar to that of a single seat fighter. Designed to challenge the German Junkers Ju 88, the Tu-2 proved comparable, and was produced in torpedo, interceptor, and reconnaissance versions.
Designed as "Samolyet (aircraft) 103", development took place under prison conditions. The first prototype was completed at factory N156, and made its first test flight 29 January 1941, piloted by Mikhail Nukhtinov. The AM-37 engine was abandoned to concentrate efforts on the AM-38F for Il-2. So Tupolev had to redesign aircraft for an available engine. Modifications of this bomber took ANT-58 through ANT-69 designation slots. A total of 2,257 Tu-2s were built.
Operational service
Built from 1941 to 1948. The Tu-2 was the USSR's second important twin-engined bomber (the first being the Pe-2), the design brought Andrei Tupolev back into favour after a period of detention. It was highly effective, being faster, and more nimble, as well as having a greater bomb load and range than virtually all medium bombers in service during the war with any army.
The Tu-2 remained in service until 1950. Some Chinese Tu-2s were encountered by British and American airman during the Korean War. In the 1958-1962 counter-riot actions in Qinghai-Tibet Platean covering Qinghai, Tibet, south of Gansu, west of Sichuan, Chinese PLAAF Tu-2s took on the roles of ground-attack, reconnaissance and liaison. The Chinese Tu-2s retired at the end of 1970s.

After reading up on this aircraft and and seeing how many were produced and the capabilities of this plane its a great canidate for AH. Its one amazing airplane, and its russian we could always use one :)

Kinda cute...look at those little LA5 heads attached to the wings :)

Yea, we do need to add "Russian" bombers.

A well presented post. :aok

It's definitely time to start adding to the list of the Italian, Japanese, and Russian planes. The Russians were one of the prominent forces during the war and yet it is only partially represented in this game.

Personally, I would like to see planes flown by other countries than the "Big 6". Would be nice to have some Dutch, French and Polish planes for the Early War set. Heck, even include planes like the Lancer that flew with the Nationalist Chinese too and the IAR-80 for the Romanians.

I definitely don't object to the idea of adding them, I always enjoyed using the less-popular aircraft to amaze some people. However, since HTC seems to be busy working on updates, it would seem to be worth their valuable time if they added more popular choices which meets the taste of the majority of their current customers who will tell their friends about this amazing WWII aviation simulator.

having NO Russian level bombers at all is pretty tragic.
This TU-2 was a great plane, it can easily match the ju88/ki67/b26 for quick hard hitting bomber runs, even has 2 x 20mm in the nose for getting some kills. MASS produced and contributed in making life hell for the germans. It needs to be done asap!

How about the "Fire Hedgehog" option?

Considering that the 2 Soviet bombers that would perfectly round out their bomber fleet are ... well.... dive bombers?
Level bombing with the Soviets wasn't a priority much.
Pe-2, and Tu-2, though, are a priority for me!

HOLY COW. Did they really use that in the war? That is a lot of fire power.
-
Looks more like a plane transporting arms for troops.

They "tested" it.
Like many setups in the war, it wasn't used much (impractical I guess)
