He did Saving Ryan's Privates and I thought that was pretty good.
check out that play on words on youtube.

The only Steven Spielberg films I've seen were his Jurassic Park series and one more film I can't recall. In my opinion, all of them lacked in appeal.
I might watch the film, however past experiences of the director's work is pushing me away.

go see "band of brothers" and "save privet Ryan". only spielberg can make a war movie realistic.
Trax1, not sure where i got the info that it will be Sept 09. you could be right.

for me, it has alot to live up to after saving private ryan, but the most realistic film in terms of sceneray and explosions etc is black hawk down but I can relate to that alot easier, its just a shame the story is not 100% accurate in the film, but thats holywood

What do you prefer? Realistic SFX? Or a realistic/accurate storyline? I vote number 2.

Idiotwood loves to take a true story and throw in something to make it better.

To those that might have misunderstood: "The Pacific" is not a movie, but a mini series. Basically "Band of Brothers - Pacific". HBO.
-
There were rumours that they were going to use footage not used in Flags of our Fathers. Any thruth in that?

For the record, if there's one thing that Spielberg can do it's push money around. And that's what he's done here. He's a producer, not a director on this project.

isn't this the movie you were in ?
Ps : you have already been paid you won't have a cent more :p

Yeah like sikboy said, Spielberg has the same role in this that he had in Band of Brothers, him & Tom Hanks are just producing it.
There are several different directors for this, you can see the info here.

Was just reading an interview with Hanks, he said it's coming out in March 2010, so almost another year until it comes out.

This is a subjective thing, but IMO Spielberg is the Beatles of contemporary cinema. Whatever you can think of to do he's done it already but better. Director, producer, whatever. If he's not directing it he's funding and producing so the "appeal" gets made. Some of his highlights:
ET - "ET phone home!"
All Indiana Jones - "I hate snakes!" "Doctor Jones! Doctor Jones!"
Back To The Future - McFlyyyyy!! Anybody home????
Jurrasic Park - CGI has arrived!
Jaws - Dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun ahhhhh!!!!!
Close and Counters - Famous musical melody
The Goonies - If you grew up in the 80s you've seen this at least 10 times
Men In Black - Nothing specific I can think of, but a huge cultural hit
Shrek - single most successful cartoon of all time
Schindler's List - Destruction to classical piano music!
Poltergeist - "They're heeeyerrrr"
Saving Private Ryan - "Earn this..." followed by grown men weeping like little girls in movie theaters across the world
Personally, the first 30 minutes of Saving Private Ryan is the most compelling, riveting, and anxious I've ever spent in a movie theater. I had to see it 3 times in the theater just to keep experiencing it.

misquote deleted, sowy

Take a look at that list. I'm not sure you can give Spielberg credit for all of those -- most of which were probably the decisions of the directors, composers, or writers. (Or some combo therein) That being said, I think he'll do a good job as the producer for The Pacific, just as he did with BoB. I very much look forward to the series.
-
No, I don't know why it quoted below. Sorry about that.
Like I said in my post, if he isn't directing it he sees genius and funds it. On what projects he decides to spend his money and resources speaks just as much volume as his directing. The man just knows what makes movies successful.
I'm looking forward to The Pacific too weeeee can't wait.

As far as I'm aware, Mr. Spielberg had nothing to do with the 1964 production of the Battle of Britain. I'm pretty sure you were thinking of some other film. ;)

You didn't catch Band of Brothers? It was very well done.

Just a little uncertain here --
Trailer said it was about "the battle that saved Australia"? But it has US Marines? Are they talking about the battles along the Kokoda trail (Aussie work <S>), or along the southern tail of New Guinea? Or about Guad? (And if its Guadalcanal, why are they showing both early LVTs and landing under fire with F6Fs swooping by?) Or is it going to be Bloody Tarawa (shiver), or a bunch of invasions...but then hard to justify the tag line.
Thought Band of Brothers was truly excellent in every way. They captured the essence of airborne, they let us feel what it might have been like to live through the Ardennes and see so many lost. Band of Brothers stayed historically accurrate to a high degree while remaining entertaining, even riveting.
Just hope the same standards of accuracy, narrative, writing and acting hold true for this project as well.
-
Is Ben Affleck in it??

Well the main reason that in the trailer it says, "The battle that saved Australia" is because that promo only aired in Australia, I don't think it has much to do with any battle that specifically saved Australia, but the general battle in the Pacific that stop the Japanese from advancing into Australia.

LOL, I was there. They filmed a lot though, some scrap was used in Letters from Iwo Jima, but there was very much more. And this is expensive stuff!
I particularly recall the Higgins boats and LVT's cruising to beach while being "shelled". Kabooms and columns of seawater, no computer graphics, just dynamite. And lots of boats, many more than those used in SPR. A special Helicopter doing the filming for about 2 days or so. And nothing used.
And there was very much more....

That's what you call lazy editing.
"Hey guys, we're on a deadline, cut anything!"

Ahhhh. No, I didn't see that movie either.
It's a mini series and its the best mini series on war ever made.
it's also the best war movie ever made.

Some of the best stuff ever made for TV :aok

Band of Brothers is something else. You have to check it out.
On another note, Spielberg also directed Empire of the Sun, and if you play this cartoon airplane game, you're somewhat compelled to watch it once :)
