Title: Astrophotography: Solar Hydrogen Alpha
Post by: CptTrips on May 22, 2009, 11:46:08 AM
I've been so busy the last few months I haven't had time to touch my telescopes.  I almost forgot which end you look in!  :rofl

I finally got time to set up my scope yesterday and try some imaging again. At least the Sun is starting to show a little activity.  For those that don't follow it, the Sun has been locked in an especially long, dull part of its activity cycle for about a year I guess.

This is the Sun filter to look at a very narrow band of the spectrum called Hydrogen alpha.  Its the light emmited by ionized Hydrogen and originates in the upper layers of the Sun's surface:

A wide view of the Sun exposed to show surface detail.  Note the dark filiment snaking across the surface:

A close look at that filiment:

This is an section of the edge and is a composite of 2 images (one exposed for the flares, one exposed to show the surface detail):

Nice pics Wab!  Time to get my little 90mm mak/cass out and do a little moon and planet viewing.

Thanks for the encouragement all.

WildCrd,

You should simply do what I do: Spend the money you can't afford and take the time you can't spare.  ;)
It works for me.  :rofl

Wab

Cool pics, I liked pic 1 of 4 the best, even though you didn't link that one.
