So I was wondering how many of the guys here in AHII smoke tobacco pipes?
**Disclaimer: I do not want any reference to the illegal substance or paraphernalia mentioned in the thread. Thank you.**
I would like to hear/see what pipes, tobacco, pipe stands, pipe tools, books on pipes, pipe shapes, favorite websites on the subject. etc.
I have only been smoking tobacco pipes for 7 months now and I cannot see why anyone would want to smoke cigarettes.
I have three pipes in my rotation as of now.
Stanwell: Featherweight Sandblasted (239), Shape: Brandy

Peterson: Donegal Rocky (69) Fishtail, Shape: Bent Billiard
Randy Wiley: Partiall Rusticated Cherrywood (55), Shape: Poker

The pipe tobacco I smoke is Captain Black

I smoke a clay tavern pipe (like the two shown below) when I'm in 18th Century reenactor mode, whatever generic mild smelling blend I can find. I'm normally a cigar smoker, but they hadn't been invented yet, so I go with the pipe when I'm in old-school mode.

WOW! Those are awesome!!
Clays burn hot, but with that long stem/shank it must be a really cool smoke to enjoy.
:aok :salute
-
As long as I don't smoke it too fast it stays cool, but the bowl and far end of the stem can get REALLY hot. I've actually seen wisps of smoke coming from the far end of the stem at times.

I'm sure there was one innovative person back then. That thought to use glass has a pipe. :D
I'm sorry I'll stop just to easy. :noid

I do reenactment too. I am doing western frontier. What do u do?

Revolutionary War. Used to do the Civil War too, but I don't have time for it anymore.

Favorites:
Peterson Sherlock Holmes Professor (Its one of the finest smoking pipes Ive ever owned!)
Dunhill Shell Group 4 Rhodesian(yes I am a member of the Fellowship of the Whitespot)
Peterson System Rustic #307
Viking Crown
Savinelli Hercules #316
Several Eric Nording Freehands
I also have a Peterson that is a tall deep bend much like the Hungarians. I cant remember the model of this pipe, but it has a very deep bowl and it is without a doubt my favorite pipe.
The Nording Pipes in my collection are very unique in that no two are identical. Maybe very similar, but not exact copies. The "Freehands" can be testing pipes......some dont smoke as well as they should.
I spent a number of years working in a local shop selling both pipes and cigars. I have two blends that are my own recipes, one of which is sold in the shop. The other is more expensive to blend than it is worth, but it is sooo good!
I do enjoy Dunhill Mixture 965 on occasion but have a blend called Mariners Delight that I use for a "working" bowl. This blend is heavy on the cavendish and very tasty!
-
I liked pipe tobacco so much that I immediately stopped the beginning of smoking.
My dad had a Dunhill and smoked a blend called "Sweet Dublin". It smells very good.
(being in a non-smoking home, I would invite a pipe smoker inside to smoke just one in the living room!)
Other brands that I grew up with were Half and Half and Raleigh, both nice. Sweet Dublin was my fav though.

I would like to do some Rev war and F&I war. If i can get over there.

I used to smoke a pipe occassionally about 25 years ago. I had a couple meerschaum lined full bents, not the sherlock holmes style. I also used small disposable corn cob pipes when on active duty. I bought the little corn cob full bents in the convenience store as they would fit in a fatigue shirt pocket. I used to smoke Borkam Rift (sp??) and some mild mixtures from a tobacco shop near where I lived. My Father used to smoke Sir Walter Raleigh. I get a strong memory of him on the odd occasions I smell it.
It's a good thing that the taste isn't the same as the aroma or I'd be like a chimney all the time. I really like the aroma of some good pipe tobaccos.

I actually like the taste of the generic cherry blend I get by the pound at Wal-Mart (a pound lasts me a full season and then some) for a few bucks. "Top Value All Natural Cherry". Good stuff, mild scent and flavor, but very tarry.

My great uncle smoked a pipe and drank beer till the day he dropped off his perch at 93
-
SIM, does the pipe store you work(ed) for have a website?
Have any of you tried Samuel Gawith Pipe Tobacco? I have some Full Virginia Flake.
Mav, I also have "Borkum Riff" cherry & whiskey.
I love Captain Black - white most of all thus far but I plan on venturing out to a pipe shop soon to try out new blends and talk their heads off.

did he do that while snoking his pipe and drink beer?

Pipe smoker since 82, shortly after that I had to move back home for a bit.
2nd day dad comes up to me and says that his pipe and my pipe are argueing and are giving mom fits.
Either I'm going to have to switch tobacco, quit smoking, or move out.
He hands me a can of Velvet, and I've been smoking it ever since.
Being a poor farmboy I don't have any fancy pipes.
Favorites are a Dr Grabow with a slight cuve to the stem and not too big a bowl.
I have half a dozen but mostly rotate between 3 of my favorites.
At one point I did have someone give me a couple of fancy freeform pipes.
I suspect they might have been worth a few dollars. But they didn't smoke worth a tinkers !@#$ in my opinion.
So I gave them to someone else who was starting, and seemed like he'd care more about impressing people.
I suspect thats what they were best at, impressing people.
-
Awesome Ghosth, I had no idea you were a fellow pipe smoker <<S>>
I was actually thinking of getting a filter pipe. I like the "Big Pipe - Smooth" by Dr. Grabow.
I'll have to try the Velvet, I am using Captain Black -white but I am looking for something else.

If you ever come across some of the cigar catalogs, like Thompson and Cigars International, they often carry pipes and pipe tobacco too. Some interesting blends.
-
I'll take a gander, thank you.
I read this online magazine http://pipesmagazine.com/ & I just registered yesterday I began to like it so much.

They used to have a site up, but for some reason I cant get it to pull up now.
If you decide to contact them, try Mariners Delight. It really is a nice blend.
They have a very good selection of pipe tobaccos and pipes. David, the owner, has been a good friend for many years and he has a really good knack for matchng people with good blends of tobacco.
A pipe doesnt have to cost a lot nor have a "big" name to be a good smoking pipe. Its entirely up to individual choice. I started out smoking Kaywoodie and Dr Grabows years ago. They werent bad pipes by any means! But, my time in the shop taught me a lot about pipes and cigars. It also gave me the chance to purchase pipes that struck me as being simply beautiful.
I really enjoy my Peterson and Dunhill pipes! They provide the perfect bowl for me each and every time. But to find out the flavor of a "new" tobacco I smoke a clay pipe. Thats the ONLY way you get the unadulterated/untarnished flavor of a new blend.
-
I found that a meerschaum lined pipe was a far cooler smoke than plain burl. I also was pleasantly surprised how well corn cob pipes smoked. They won't last long but they are also very inexpensive. A good pipe to try a new tobacco with too. All of my pipes were inexpensive as it was always a part time thing for me.

I have no intention of starting to smoke again.. but my dad was a pipe smoker. I remember one of his quests when we visited family on England was to get a Peterson Pipe. He also scoured the globe for Four Seasons Tobacco. Captain Black was his second choice.
:salute

I agree about the corn cob pipes, I've had several over the years, some given to me, some made by myself.
In a pinch, a milkweed stem and a corncob from a cornfield will get you your fix if you lose a pipe.
All tend to smoke very nice and cool. I had a meerschaum once that was very good as long as I didn't smoke it more than once a day. But at the time that was a royal pain so it went into the discard pile.
While we are on the subject, favorite lighters and why?
Standard zippo here, although I'm also trying the zippo pipe lighter.
I have a couple of ronson butane jobs that just are not dependable enough to suit me.
Although I like the clean taste and the jet torch flame for lighting when its halfway down the bowl.
-
I have your standard zippo as well. I am thinking of getting a Peterson pipe lighter though.
-
I used the standard cheapo butane lighter that you got at the convenience store.
-
Good old fashioned wooden match. Don't taste butane or lighter fluid that way.
Same with my cigars.
