Title: Border Patrol
Post by: helbent on May 25, 2009, 09:03:34 AM
I have applied to the border patrol.  This week I must see a doctor, perform a fitness test and travel to Atlanta GA for an oral interview.

I have been hearing some horror stories about the border patrol as more and more of my friends learn that I have applied.

Is anyone a current or former agent that can shed some light on the job.  Or do you know anyone that is or was an agent.

Hopefully someone can put my worries to rest.

Thx HB

I haven't heard much. Probably many horror stories as there is in any law enforcement agency.

Atlanta for the Border Patrol?? That says a lot right there...... they keeping fish from the atlantic from coming in?

Actually on the southern border as long as you can look the other way and keep your hands in your pockets you might get the job. Their hands are pretty much tied as to doing anything in regards to their job.

No offense to the men and women on that force, they have no say in it.

For most agents I talked to, it's a pretty kick back job. If you start to be higher in the chain of command you might get frustarted if you are actually trying to get the job done. Horror stories happen.

I personaly couldn't apply, but a fellow pilot from Utah jsut got hire with very few flying hours, and not even a conceal licence. Now is the time to get in I guess!

I have worked with BP before. I like all the agents they say it is a lay back job. Last week I had two illegal's, that said they were here for 10yrs illegally. I called BP and they said they couldn't do anything, and for me to just let them go. Almost everytime I call I end up letting the suspects go I don't know if it is b/c the agents are lazy or if b/c they can't do anything. From what I understand you have to spend at least a year on the border when you first get hired, but it could be a lie not sure.

The southwest border is where you will have issues.  If you speak Spanish it is a plus but if not, you may find it difficult dealing with the immigrants.  And if you dont mind being shot at, they try to pay you lots of money to let drugs get in and seeing a dead person that may have been in the sun 3-4 days.  Other than that, you better have a clean record going back 7-10 years.

He wont be dealing with any immigrants..... just illegals. Big Big difference. We have terms we use for them down here that are not allowed on these boards.

If you speak Spanish

That's not a job requirement?

Be prepared to be re-located.  You might get lucky if they post you at an airport.  But since I don't know any more "active"  BP agents, this is considered old news.

I am not a BP just a regular cop. I have heard that you have to spend at least one year on the border then you have the option to move into the states or stay on the border.

Sorry LCCajun, when I said "you", I didn't mean you personally, I meant "you" as in any Border Patrol Officer.  I was ignorant of all the Border Patrol does and just assumed that if you are in the Border Patrol, you would, naturally, be on the border.  I went to the official Border Patrol website and learned that that is not always the case.

"The Border Patrol’s mission has increased over the years. Today, the Border Patrol must also operate within the interior of United States — monitoring roads and even some airports where illegal aliens concentrate. In addition, other government agencies have granted the United States Border Patrol certain additional powers to help them protect our borders."

The gov. has pretty much tied thier hands the last few months. My brother [I.C.E. agent] told me they can't even raid plants or construction sights anymore. They ONLY round up the ones who commit crimes. Of course I said they commited a crime in just being here.
