Title: So I started flying again...
Post by: frank3 on May 27, 2009, 04:48:37 AM
...and it was sheer terror!

I've got one of those dreadful twisty sticks, and can't seem to calibrate it so the rudder won't affect X and Y inputs.
This means I can't accurately aim (not that I am that accurate anyway!)
Defending bombers is practically impossible, due to rudder inputs.
Can't put the aircraft on auto-level/climb, since it keeps sending joystick-inputs.

All in all it was terrible, but felt good to be flying again! Created an account called frank3, so I'll be enjoying my 2 weeks free trial again yay!
I might even be tempted to subscribe, if I can tame the joystick...

EDIT: It could also have been the rustiness after a 5 year break!

If your stick is poor quality and sends unwanted inputs (especially ones affecting alt-x etc.) increase your deadzone in stick settings in AH presets.

Maybe because you posted saying you are getting a second free trial?

Frank, what time are you on? I'm sure he meant his first trial was over 5 years ago, surely HiTech gives another trial with that much of a time difference? especially if he said he was going to subscribe

The Saitek X-52 has a rudder lock on it so you can't twist the stick.  Not 100% perfect but pretty good.

I could be wrong, I was just taking a shot in the dark.

Thank you Scotch.

I think Estes is right and I'm not allowed to have a second free trial. No biggy really, but it's a shame I'm denying the others lots of kills on me :D
My first free trial was actually around 2000, I only figured out I could go online after the first week!
After that never changed the account.

Fraaaaank!

As far as twisty-sticks go, you can adjust the scaling and deadband a lot to help you out, but in the end you have to live with cross-input. Not because of the stick, but because of human ergonomics while USING the stick!

Get a cheap, old, used, whatever, pair of rudder pedals if you can. I have 10-year-old CH gameport pedals and while nothing like the slider-pedals nowadays, are waaaay better than twisty ever was for me.

Welcome back!

Frank, I returned as well and its hard to get the dust out. I use the Saitek 290 twisty-stick. Problem with it while I'm turning and burning, my hand irrevocably will twist the stick. For the rudder just increase the deadband and dampening so that you won't get the same problem I got.

Deadband helped alot, I can now move the gunpositions without affecting rudder, but have enough input left to make fine adjustments. It's really great to be flying again, even menaged to score some 25k hits with a lancaster! (remember, 5 years no flying!)

I'll see if I can get my hands on a credit card soon, or are there other ways to subscribe? (too lazy to read the instructions...)

You can pay in differing ways. You can even pre-pay for several months.

Frank they gave me the 2 week`er, I too was away for about 5-6 years. If you can cope with CH products prices I recommend them.  Or if the wallet is tight try picking up a used MS Sidewinder FF Pro2, a great twisty.

Welcome back. :aok
