March 1945; With a significant portion of one of its wings and a section of its fuselage shot away by anti-aircraft fire, this Navy torpedo plane remained in the air for more than 100 miles after it was damaged near Chichi Jima.
The tail section eventually fell off and the Avenger ditched into the sea, after which a Navy destroyer rescued the crew.

So, how does the AH Avenger fare in similar circumstances? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
-
Grumman, as part of the dreaded secret "Allied conspiracy", secretly "overmodeled" the Avenger, much to the dismay of Japanese AA crews.

Umm what about the guy in the back seat? Classic commercial for Snickers, not going anywhere for awhile?

Has no one noticed that the EP-3 Orion that collided with the Chinese F-8 lost a sizable portion of one of its wings, and still was able to land?
See the common thread.... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) AH Chog, Real life TBF, Real life EP-3 ? Its a US NAVY conspiracy I tell you, a NAVY CONSPIRACY!!!!
I seem to remember once seeing a picture of a B17 that lost one of its horizontal stabilizers and made it home to land. Try that in AH will yah (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) Not even close, in any plane type. Its impossible.
I will have to try and find it.

I'm surprised at how little the opposite aileron is deflected and still compensating.
Hmmm.
Great pic <S>

Anyone notice that this is the same unit as the TBM modeled in AH?
Nice pic JB.

Sizable damage??!!
The leading edge is dinged up and deformed outboard of #1 engine. That's not serious damage by any standard, especially the Navy's standards. I've seen aircraft trap aboard ship with considerably greater structural damage, including an A-6E that
lost its radome as well. I've crewed a C-1A that flew 200+ miles with its belly torn open to such an extent that you could crawl out through the hole. What really proved to be the most serious problem with the EP-3 was the loss of two engines (it a very heavy aircraft), with #1 not able to feather. A windmilling prop creates a great deal of drag. Had the aircraft not suffered damage to more than one engine, the crew could have flown back to Japan without serious risk. It would have been very loud in the cockpit, and the missing radome would cause some stout buffeting, but the aircraft would have been flyable.
My regards,

Yes, it can FLY, but could it fight?
How many wingless chogs and n1ks do you see looping, turning and shooting others down?
