Title: North Korea
Post by: Nilsen on May 28, 2009, 10:47:21 AM
I know some of you are stationed there and maybe some even live there.

Hopefully the events of the last few days is just Kim Very Ill trying to sement his position and making sure his brilliant som gets to take over but in any case... hoping for the best and crossing fingers.

NK is China's puppet, so I don't think China is going to do much there. I get this feeling (and it seems to be so at the perfect timing that I'll be enlisting sometime this year) That we are going to go back to NK.

China doesn't want a war anymore than the rest of us do. They've realized how much power they have economically, to screw that up. They do realize they have a wack job with a nuke that can screw all that up, so don't be surprised to wake up one morning hearing that NK has a new leader becuase he died in his sleep.

just been announcedm that N. Korea renounced the truce.  The North also accused the U.S. of preparing to attack the isolated communist country in the wake of its second nuclear bomb test, and warned it would retaliate to any hostility with "merciless" and dangerous ferocity.

They always do that.  Some people brush their teeth before going to bed, NK leaders remind the world that they hate everything and everyone and any discussion on any topic is a declaration of war that invalidates the armistice agreement.  It pretty much defines the NK leadership.

They're also utterly bankrupt.

They'll rattle their swords a bit then negotaite new aid packages to fund the Glorious Leader's Ferrari collection in return for ramping down their nuclear program. Then, in a couple of months, we'll start the whole dance again.

What a bunch of toolbox.  They might as well invade SK and get over it so the rest of the world can move on.

They do it because they enjoy it! What other amusement do they get there?
Threaten the world, see them crawling to you, eat UN cookies while "negotiating", extort some foreign aid, then make a big BOOM and go HAHAHA in everyone's faces. Damn that is fun.

<turns to the camera> It's good to be the king!

What's the problem, we have it on good authority that there is no problem.

""I don't think that anybody in the (Obama) administration thinks there is a crisis," Gates told reporters aboard his military jet."

We all just need to learn to concerve our carbon credits instead.

Actually they need aid because 80% of their budget goes to the military/leaders instead of doing something for the people.

The DPRK (North Korea for those historically impaired) is China's buffer..  China makes sure to keep all the communities on the Yalu River which borders with the DPRK as poor as possible..
This way, people from the DPRK wouldn't want to "immigrate" to China..  China underestimated how poor the DPRK was because the poorest of the poor in China are far better off
than just about anyone from the DPRK that isn't one of Kim's privileged underlings....  North Koreans still cross the Yalu on a daily basis much like Mexicans crossing the Rio Grande with the
notion that "anything is better than this"....

China is in no way a puppet of the DPRK (as someone mentioned)..  China holds all the cards in this situation..  They need the DPRK as a buffer..
China will never compromise it's position on this....  It would be akin to shooting itself in the foot..
Notice how China's rhetoric is harsh at the start but quickly cools and opposes sanctions or any other useless resolution the UN tries to throw at it..

It is not in China's self interest to have yet another westernized country right on it's doorstep...

The DPRK will be the DPRK as long as China exists in it's current state...
