Title: "Seat of the Pants" feedback & Wingtip Contrails
Post by: Trukk on May 31, 2009, 06:00:06 PM
1. It'd sure be nice to have some sort of indicator like a small triangle that would slide up and down the side of the screen as G loading was applied.  Basically to simulate the "seat of the pants" feedback a real pilot would have.

2. One thing I liked in WWIIOL was the wingtip contrails that would appear when a aircraft was really pulling G's.

Most planes in game have an acclerometer/g-meter.

Yes, you have the G-meter, AND the onset of blackout as a guide, plus the stall horn as a sort of audible AoA indicator. Having these three things act as replacements for the tactile sensations you can't get sitting in front of a computer is one of the most brilliant things about AHII.

As for the wingtip vortices, they won't necessarily always be visible. The standard way to tell if the opponent is reefing around in a really hard turn is to look at the enemy airplane and see if he's reefing it around in a really hard turn. It works tolerably well. :aok

Now that we have buffet, we could do away with the stall horn for planes that didn't have it.

There is quite a bit of gap there Moot, between the time when the horn first becomes audible and when you get into the buffet

I know.. The benefit I'm thinking of is players learning the envelope without any aids. So that they "know" the planes. Not fly them with computer aids.

Yes there's the G meter, but you have to look at it instead of keeping your eyes out of the cockpit.  The triangle thing you would be aware of with your periphal vision (simulating the seat of the pants feedback).

Yes there's blackout and stalling, but unless you're really hamfisted or a beginner pilot, there's more to G management than that!

I realize the tip trails wouldn't always appear in real life, but they often would and it's a cool effect to see someone realize they're being bounced and the contrails appears as they reef it around.
