If you could purchase, and fly, one and only one WW-ll aircraft which one would you buy?
Use the same criteria as AH. "Seen combat/squadron strength".
-
There are so many...
Probably a Mosquito.
-
Funny that this question should be asked as I'm currently looking for someone to offer me an "indecent proposal" for Mensa to raise the $4.5 million needed to purchase a P-38 that recently came on the market.
ack-ack
-
Well, you know I can never make up my mined between the 2:
F4U-4 or Spitfire mk XIV
^that is if I have the money :pray
-
109K4.
-
all of them.
but I'd start with an F4U. then a 38, some LW birds. I'm rich biotches!
-
Probably a PBY Catalina.
Hey, whaddya I need to be zipping around at 400+ MPH for? You try fitting a tent, a grill, the dog, a cooler, a keg, and half-a-dozen fishing rods into your P-51s, Corsairs, or 109s when you want to go on vacation though...
-
Would fit fine in me Mossie! :)
Might be hard to find a good spot to land though...
-
Well, besides the P-51D Mustang, I would choose the P-39D Airacobra.
Both are fun plane to fly. :aok

Oddly, I started to post that aircraft just after Die Hard did, but work took priority and I didn't get back to it.
PBY-5 indeed.
-
The B-29 hands down.
-
C47
Useful. Can take a bunch of friends anywhere you want to go. Haul stuff if you want. Easier to fly then the fighters. Easier to get parts for repairs. Plenty of room for a nice bed... You know, mile high club and all that. :D
-
A-26K
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/08/A-26K_609SOS_near_NKP_1969.jpg)
I want to reintroduce it in the COIN role in the current near east theater.
-
I'd probably have to go with the P-38.
It just looks so beautiful sitting there. So deadly and beautiful.
-
:aok bf 109 g2
-
For sheer joy in flying, A6m or a D3a Val.
Otherwise I have to agree with BnZ. For fishing, camping, going to con, hooking up with squad mates and friends.
PBY or similar Amphib would be perfect. Load up the grill, kayaks, tent, etc and go wherever you want.
-
I would have to go with a bomber. I don't fit in a fighter cockpit :lol
So... Do 217 for me

that reminds me of Jay Leno for some reason ...
-
PBY or A-26.
-
(http://tbn0.google.com/hosted/images/c?q=6b53906536092eb5_landing)
Lower operating/maintenance cost then most of those all ready listed, and can carry a ton of stuff with plenty of room for a few friends.
Just can't land on water like the PBY or J2F.
-
HellCat hands down! I can hear the engine purring now...
-
Ta 152. I'd gut all the ballast.
-
that reminds me of Jay Leno for some reason ...
Its been retired and replaced with a gigantic and much funnier Irish-American?
Or the chin?
-
Hellcat would be my 2nd choice. That or a Jug. :aok
The first cleared the sky of the sneaky Japs. The 2nd gave what for to the bloody Hun.
Both were work horses. Both were heros. Both are among the most successful fighter designs ever.
If no 38s,Cats, or Jugs were on the shelf I'd make do with a Mossie.
What a fabulous airplane the Mossie. What a fabulous history.
-
I'd get a PT boat too. get a bigass trolling motor up front. rod holders. get a torch after the torpedo tubes and make them into a couple of smokers, livewell, and bait bucket. ammo storage for coolers. sigh.
-
Probably a PBY Catalina.

Good point.. id take the pby too.

You should have been fishing with us about 15 years ago- got passed in NYs Barge Canal by a PT Boat on Memorial Day weekend in 1994. And, of course, the batteries in the camera were dead.
I don't remember its hull number, but it was zebra-striped. Full crew by the looks of it too- about a dozen old guys lounging in lawn chairs on the deck while one "drove".
-
one of the jugs.
-
I'd probably go for a B-17
But with formations :D
Or a Spitfire, so I can wreck it
-
F4U-4 or the 1A
:salute

i'd find a way to convince the Air Force to sell me the P38 that's at McGuire AFB, get a full restoration(keeping everything authentic looking inside too), and get her back in the air again.
-
F4U-1A
-
I read some where their is only one flying a6m in the world. That might be a good buy.
-
I read some where their is only one flying a6m in the world. That might be a good buy.
Yeah, that way you can sell it for twice the cost to one of us :D
-
I just couldn't say no to a Spitfire.
If i couldn't get a Spitfire, i would like a Mosquito.
-
I read some where their is only one flying a6m in the world. That might be a good buy.
i think there's 3.
-
Any of the 109s , but preferable a 109f.
-
Probably a PBY Catalina.

You need a Sunderland. :)
-
Tough choise,
190 (best looking plane ever imo) or the KI-84 (there is only one left). . .
I would not get a 109 because its bound to crash on landing. . .and that would break the bank
-

If you even got it up in the first place :D
-
Undoubtedly a Spitfire but I'd have a hard time choosing between a V or a IX. I guess I'd take the IX.
-
Bf 109F-4
-
If you even got it up in the first place :D
take off is a lot easier then landing (not that I would know. . .since I fly gliders irl, not prop planes) but with the wheel base that close. . .its no wonder more 109s were lost on landing then in combat!

p-38l OR A p51,...CANT DECIDE!!
-
a C47 so I can pwn noobs like in the latest james bond :D

A-26; & a P-63 for the wife!
-
ya know, as long as it had working forward firing guns, I'd take any of them. I'd spend saturdays doin pork runs on the mall parking lots.
-

I'd be strafing speedboats and jet skis on Oneida Lake myself.
-
Well if it still has the bomb sight, guns and everything then the B29, the guns don't even have to work, I want them for display and I will replace them with real-looking paintball guns to scare the crap out of the neighbors :D! The bombsight however would have to work as I REALLY want to try droping something, anything, it could even be an old car, it would still be fun. and besides if you loaded the bombay with paint balls you could open the doors and at 40,000ft you will be LONG gone by the time they get anything that flys even in the air so they have no proof.
If it dosen't have the bombsight or the guns then I would have to pick the P47N. Sorry but the best combonation of firepower, ord load, speed, manuverability,.....well lets just face it, it looks cool :aok. You know what, screw it. I would use the plane to put on airshows and rob bill gates (put a bomb in his house in the middle of the night and due to a technicality that is in what no one can prove is a falsified document I happen to be his next of kin and get all his cash.

FM2, Corsair, a Dauntless, Mig-3, or a LaGG-3. Nothing ugly about them. Besides, chicks dig gullwings.
-
(http://www.btinternet.com/~lee_mail/PBY-7.jpg)
Outfitted with sattelite TV, latest Nav, a Scuba recharging station, and a small skiffboat.
The ULTIMATE WW2 a/c to own. You can cross the atlantic, land anywhere, fish off of it, SCUBA off of it, the world is your oyster. Hell yes.
-
Right on Rebel!
Imagine fishing lakes that see 1 or 2 fishermen a year instead of thousands.
Or scuba based off some remote key or cay where there are no people to be seen for miles.
I'd think it would be easy to slip a pair of 9' kayaks aboard that girl also. Explore, kayak during the day, come back to your plane/base camp at night. Simply too many possibilities to think about.
Now I just have to win the lottery first!
-
PBY is nice, but a Duck is small enough that you can land it on ponds, rivers and canals, not just lakes. That much more area opened up to you. Plus its a biplane. :aok
-
Yeah, Treize, but what's the range? Just how big *is* that thing?
PBY's are friggin ginormous. :D
-
I think im a sad little piggy, but the one plane I have always wanted to fly, and would definetly buy before even a Spitfire, is a JU87B. I looks evil, It dives like nothing on earth and it can drop a heck of a bomb onto that annoying little old granny down the road! What more do you want! And as was said, the girls just dig those gull wings! :D
-
I have to agree with Treize's pick. I used too love the idea of flying around in a PBY but then I found out you have to have a crew to fly it because the engine management controls are not within reach of the pilot or copilot. There was a separate control panel that required a flight engineer to operate.
The J2F has enough room for 2 plus gear. The range is defiantly much shorter <800 miles compared to >3,000 miles for the Cat. You could add a fuel tank to increase the distance but it still wouldn't come close to the Cat's range. But being forced to fly with a crew really turns me off to the PBY.
The engineer's panel is located in the top of the plane where the wing attaches to the fuselage.

I would beyond all doubt buy, fly and love to own a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk...

Now, that's a HANSOME bird...

Bah. Move it to the cockpit roof. Done. :D
Or....revamp and give it a moern engine control system, with everything in the cockpit (you've got room, man.)
Then outfit it with a killer sound system and throw a microwave in that kitchen, and a big screen tv.... :x :x
-
Conformal fuel tanks are feasible today. I don't see why you guys are limiting your dream planes to their historical wartime range.
-
Yeah, Treize, but what's the range? Just how big *is* that thing?
PBY's are friggin ginormous. :D
I'm not too worried about range, I can reach all my favorite fishing spots and nice quiet Adirondack lakes with it, and its not so friggen big that I have to worry about not having enough room to take off- most of the lakes I'd land on are surrounded by mountains. Plus it would be a lot easier to park at normal boat dock than a PBY.
-
If you can afford a PBY you can afford a crew that says "Yes Sir!" to your every command.
-

A crew who will of course all been featured in Playboy's "The Women of Aviation" spread. :aok

I always really liked the seaplane in Commando, Lake Buccaneer I think. their mil version the Seawolf would be a great toy for a trip to the wilderness - seats 4/6 and luggage plus its got hardpoints :D
doubles as a jetboat too :rock

P-61... I'd hollow the thing out, put in a little galley, head(latrine), 2 person jacuzzi, bunkbeds, and a theater system with drop down screens like they have in all the mini-vans now..

No Question:

Well, I can't fit in your tiny little(although fun) fighters, so I would take a B-24.Go just about anywhere with a decent runway along with 8 thousand pounds of fat friends. :lol
-
B-29.... but really who could afford gas and spare parts after they got what they want?
-
Imagine fishing lakes that see 1 or 2 fishermen a year instead of thousands.
Man after my own heart! I just spent my annual two weeks fishing in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, it was great! But hitting even more remote lakes would be a dream come true... Somewhere there is a 5 foot long Musky with my name on it! :D
-
Would be a p-39, altho i would have a high alt supercharger added, maby some wing Dts in place of the wing .50's just so i can make it to your house. "Whoever you are "
-

on that criteria i would take an H8K Emily
because its pretty
or a Blohm & Voss BV 222 because it was huge and had 6 engines
it was more of a flying yacht than a flying boat
-
Rebel, what is the source of that photo? Do you have a year on it?
Tks
-
If you even got it up in the first place :D
you just let the auto take off do the work :D

BV238
go big or stay home!!
-
all of them.
but I'd start with an F4U. then a 38, some LW birds. I'm rich biotches!
Care to share the wealth?
-
F-7F Tigercat
The Kalamazoo Airzoo has their F-7F Tigercat for sale. It is flyable, restored and comes with a price tag around $2-2.5 million.
-
FM2 would be it for me.
-
For me it would be the 262. After training of course.
-
B-29, 262, or Spit,

Why u need half dozen poles its just you
-
a Yak as my first choice, PBY if I wanted an "outdoors" plane, and the SBD for so me and my bud/wife could anywhere we wanted (I've always had an unhealthy obsession with the SBD).
-
You know what, I'd pick the PBY for an outdoors plane two. And I'd pick the TMB so I can load a whole bunch of stuff into the bomb bay. I'd fly it to the store, load my stuff in there and take off. It may be big enough to hold the tent, the grill, the keg, the cooler, the fishing rod, the tackle box, and the food into the bomb bay. I'd keep the dog in the bombadire position. After I removed the controls of course. Wouldn't want him dropping my beer on the way to the campsight :noid.

twin engine is the way to go, way safer.

Figured that I'd give the ole crop dusters down here in La a run for their money in one of these hurricanes. :salute

Hmm...id like to say the 190a5 (my favorite plane in game) but I think the P47D40 jug looks sexier....
-
A P38... saw one at an airshow in Sonoma county, Ca recently, along with a couple P51's, some Yaks, an A26, a P40, and a Sea Fury, and the 38 dominated the tarmac. I don't think there was a better looking or more graceful plane (both on the ground and in the sky) north of Chino. ;) Everything about it is smooth and sleek. Looking at it head-on, though, it was menacing.
However, a very good case is being made for the PBY by a few of you. :lol
