Title: Sky Crawlers
Post by: Die Hard on June 02, 2009, 07:22:00 PM
Awesome air combat themed anime movie! Very Crimson Skies inspired.

The first scene in this clip is the opening scene of the movie:

Don't watch the whole thing if you plan on getting this or you might spoil it. Suffice it to say it was totally awesome in HD!

It is beautiful. Some planes look like a wierd J7W and the other looked like a Mustang/Mig-3/ fired like a....something! Gonna get/see this at the movies.

You can tell that it was done by the same studio as IGPX (great series) and Ghost in the Shell (have yet to see it). Just look at the animation of the planes! So surreal yet realistic at the same time!

Nice Shinden <sorta> vrs Franken-Dora-Pony-109-F4U with contra-rotating props.
I do have to wonder why it takes them so long to look more than 20 degrees either side of 12 oclock tho  :D

I've always wondered what setups like that (including Crimson Skies) have with contra-rotating props. EVERYTHING seems to have them.

I think it's done to make the aircraft seem more modern or futuristic. Rather than just a straight up prop job.

More I see, less impressed I am. every fight has the Top Gun "I'm gonna slam on the brakes" move, every plane seems to be able to go from standing still to climbing straight up in 20 seconds or less, and WTF is with that "death spiral" move at the end of the scene Beefcake posted?

That freaky 109/190/Corsair hybrid thing is called the "Skyly J-2"

The XP-55 Ascender lookalike is the "Sanko Mark B"

Apparently the 'war' is a neverending pseudo-conflict between two corporations, fought with genetically engineered clone pilots, for the sheer purpose of entertainment.

Yup.

In the movie they called it the J-Zwei which should leave no doubt in anyone's mind that yeah, that's the bad guy. ;)

Make no mistake: This is a cartoon movie with cartoon planes doing cartoon moves. Damned good looking though!

The plot sounds a bit like the war in 1984. One thing that made me chuckle- every time you see the close up of the cat's head on the badguy plane, I hear "THUNDERCATS! HOOOOOO!". Anyone else?

Yeah  :lol

The plot is a bit deeper than what Treize69 said, and very Japanese (read: moralizing). Basically these genetically engineered adolescent clones fight an endless pseudo-war to prevent humanity from having a real one. The premise is that unless we are constantly reminded of the horrors of war by watching people die in battle we will forget, and repeat history.

As for the planes... This story takes place in the future and I don't think the aircraft are designed as real war machines (jets and missiles). Similar to the gladiator armor and weapons of ancient Rome I think the aircraft are purpose built dueling machines, designed within a set of game rules. They probably have several thousand horsepowers which is why they need contra-rotating props and can do a lot more than WWII fighters, like climb vertically. Just a thought.

I hope this isn't considered a hijack...

Not Sky Crawlers but a true anime-masterpiece movie featuring semi-fictional float planes. The setting is Adriatic Sea in the early 30's. Air-pirates, semi-historical armed Schneider Trophy racers, nice technical details in the planes, engines, etc...

Porco Rosso trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zibFwVWgICc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zibFwVWgICc)

Not for everyone but I highly recommend it. :)

Look like a non-Disney version of "Tale Spin".

Yes, because we all know it would never fly.

Found a trailer. It's in Japanese, but it should give you an impression of what's in between the combat scenes.
