Its a modification of the Yak-9D series. The modification consisted of replacing the rear cockpit with a bay that could house 4 bomb bays, placed in pairs. One behind the other. In each could be suspended four FAB-100 (220lb) bombs. Alternatively four clusters of PTAB 2kg anti tank bombs could be carried. The gun armament was the same as the Yak 9D. A series of production batches of around 109 aircraft where built and delivered to the 130th Fighter Division command by F Shinkarenko. Operational trials where to prove unsatisfactory due to the lack of a special bomb site and bad handling qualities when loaded with bombs.

This from 'Yakovlev Aircraft' by Bill Gunston and Yefim Gordon.
Yak-9B. Known to the Yakovlev OKB as the Yak-9L, the prototype of this fighter bomber was modified Yak-9D No.14-20. The only change was to equip the space behind the seat with either 4 tubes for FAB-100 bombs' carried nose-up at an angle of 75deg, or 4 cannisters each for 32PTAB-2.5-1.5(1.5kg) bomblets. Normal load was 2 bombs or containers only. Bombs were loaded by putting the tailwheel on a trestle, removing the detachable rear canopy fairing and attaching a portable winch. Only very experienced pilots were permitted to carry the maximum load. The prototype was converted by 20 March 1944, but service trials did not begin until 18 December 1944. Eventually production was limited to 109 aircraft, partly because of lack of accurate sighting (though in a 45deg dive an error within 50m was usual) and because of tricky handling with maximum load and full tanks.

Found this on another forum and thought I would share with yall. Enjoy!

Or how about the Yak 9-UT. Essentially the same airframe and engine as the 9-U but with 2 cowl mounted 20mm cannon and either a 23mm or 37mm hub mounted cannon.

Only around 280 were built and probably less than 1/2 saw service.   Although if implemented this would have to be a 5.0 perk ride.   It was the 37mm hub, 2 20mm configuration.

But I think you might be confusing the UT with the Yak-9TK experiments.

So you want a Yak 4?
+1 for any new plane besides the F-22.

Because on 282 were ever produced, and that includes Post-war a/c.  The number that made it to frontline service  by war end was about 114 (adjust for Soviet BS to obtain real numbers please as production did not start until 1945).  This thing is neat but even more rare than the F4u-1c & -4, both of which make some ppl scream in the forums.

"Operational trials where to prove unsatisfactory due to the lack of a special bomb site and bad handling qualities when loaded with bombs."

Not too surprising considering that the a/c had, even in fighter configuration, a tendency to tighter a turn by itself and it needed to be "pushed" out of turn with the control column. I guess the designers had some spare time and booze to invent such a "vodkavention".  :rolleyes:

no the 9-UT

Yak-3P would be the dream imo. . . but we are probably going to get some lesser version.

Before we expand the Yak line-up; how about adding the MiG-3?  I'm not asking for the 1942 model with 2x20mm or even the model 1941 variant with 1xUBS + 2xShKAS + 2xUBK; just the model 1941 with 1xUBS + 2xShKAS would be great:  'cause all MiG-3 could carry 6 x RS-82 or 2 * FAB-100 or 4 * FAB-25.

<end hijack>

S!

 Do not ask for Mig-3U, 12 produced ever. VERY short time of use in some trials. Yak-3 would be a menace, German orders told to engage it above 5km where the engine of it began rapidly to lose power. Yak-1b would be a nice addition :)
