Need advise on the best TV for under $800.......

best is subjective
at that price point you'll be looking at 32" or smaller......... in that size theres quite a few good companies...... sony, toshiba, sharp are probably the tops out there in that size although samsung and panasonic arent bad either....I personally never liked those 2 brands.. just my opinion though alot do....... dunno how much you know about tvs and resolutions etc..... but theres alot of techno jargon just like any other product........ 99% of the crap on the label wont mean anything or be important for that matter unless you need certain inputs etc...... the main numbers are gonna be the resolution 1080p/1080i/720p........ p is better than i and higher is better

I may be wrong, but I've been told unless your daughter has blue-ray player/recorder or is planning to get one, very little is currently broadcast at 1080. You may be able to afford a bigger screen at 720.

you are correct that until now very few things have been 1080p...... most notably blueray and psp3........
however this is because until the past few years everyone was still using analog crts
its a digital world now and moving fast......... having a 720p today is already like owning a P4 and 2 years from now itll be like a PIII etc
why waste money today on day before yesterdays technology..... its outdated when it hits the shelf

If this is a "2nd room TV" a 720p is ALL you need. If it's a Primary, then MAYBE you're points would enter the realm of thinking.

yes its all you need if youre hooking a vcr or old dvd player to it........ it would work great for that pong setup or even a coleco........... to move from a 32" decent brand 1080 to a 37" crap brand 720 would be an absolute waste

I work at Sam's Club to make some money while at college. When I have nothing to do, I watch the movie that can be seen on the TVs and by far imo samsung's seem to have the best picture. The top selling TVs at Sam's as what it seems as I constantly help load them are the Samsung's being #1, Sony's #2, and Vizio #3. Panasonic and Phillip's are 4th and 5th. Samsung's do run a little more but probably worth it from what Ive seen as I have never seen a Samsung returned.

There are some valid poitns for 720p but if she intends on gaming on it then stick with the 1080p.
Esp if it's going to be 32" or over.
Don't read the hype, look with your eyes at various stores if you have the time.
An overall great pick is the vizio from costco. 2 year labor/parts warranty and 90 day return policy...cant be beat.
The picture quality is good and if not a main living room tv will be the best bang for the buck.
Personally anything less than 42" is a lcd for me... 42-50" is plasma still..., until someone can show me they are willing to put forth the effort to create a reliable and range performing tv at the 40 and up range with lcds..
I'm so glad I waited and didn't buy a thing. I don't plan on buying either for another year or so. I would have been disappoitned with anything in the living room sized tvs. Would be nice to see my football games in hd this season but I might get something smaller for the bedroom for that temporarily until next fall (2010) when the UBER great tvs are released! :)
