OK, in the new plane thing in the wishlist forum we kinda got on to good looking planes, well fighters mostly but same thing.
I want you to say what you think are the three best looking planes for fighters and bombers. Tell which ones you think look the best and why they look good.
Mine are the P47 because it looks powerful, rugged, dangerous, and to be honest...when I fly it, it looks just plain sexy.
The next one would be the P51 as it looks, sleek, fast, maneuverable, and is a high alt greyhound.
The next plane is the F4U-D(I think I have the right plane ma by I have the wrong one though), and I don't know why it looks good to me, it just kinda looks powerful, and strong, and kinda...well hot I guess is what you would call it.
Bombers would be the B26 because it looks fast (for a bomber), it looks well armed, and I just like it's curves; While the B25 for some reason just looks....ugly, not from a military stand point but for looks.
My next bomber would be the B24 because the silver makes it look sleek, fast, it looks powerful.
The next bomber would be the B17; it looks rugged, mean, tough, and it looks like if you try to mess with it, it will send you to the next world.

Spitfire mk XIV
It looks like it's going Mach 3 when siting on the ground.
Fast streamline airframe, flushed rivets, and a huge powerful griffon engine\
Just today I was thinking about making this tread...you beat me to it lol
-
p38 just beautiful.
corsairs. dunno something about them.
109s and 190s. German iron just looks sinister
-
I have to say, after I saw one last weekend, I've developed a new appreciation for the bubble canopied Griffon Spitfire. Sexy aircraft, and sounds amazing.
Sexiest bomber? No contest.
-
Any non-clipped wing Spitfire. One of the most beautiful airframes ever.
P-38. Just some thing about it.
Pony is nice looking, Jug is good looking if you like barrel-chested bruisers, Corsair is nice looking in a "that is so strange looking that I like it" kind of way.
And I agree, the 109 and 190 have a quality about them that just says... well...... "it's business time."
-
1)P38
she has that "don't screw with me, or i'll ruin your day" look to her, both in the air, and on the ground.
2)P51
she has to be one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built. her lines are smooth, and flow into one another.
3)F6F hellcat.
she looks like you can kick the poop out of her, and then she'll mess up your day.
bombers
1)B17
rugged, absolutely beautiful, flowing lines, and could fly through almost anything.
2)avro lancaster
very tough looking, looks like she flys with an attitude.
3)B25 Mitchell
mean, and tough looking.
-
p38 just beautiful.
In my opinion, there is no plane that is as beautiful as the P-38. It's like that really hot chick that lives next door that you know is just a wildcat in bed.

WW1? WW2? Korea? Vietnam? Gulf War? Present day? I could name a few. :)
I'll agree with the 38 as the sexiest american plane, followed by the Black Widow and F4U-1D.
D-9 hands down for the Luftwaffe.
Yak-9/Yak-3 or TU-8 for the VVS.
Spit Vb or Spit IX for the Brits.
and the J2M/Ki-84/Ki-61 for the Japanese.
-
P-38 for sure has my #1 locked...
I've always been partial to f4u/p47 too!

-
I would have to say the P-38 is probably my favorite when it comes to "best looking." It has that look the reminds you of a combination of speed and power.
Closely behind the 38 would be the 109s (except for the E models). They, along with the Spitfire, have the "fighter" look to them.

That bubble-top XIV looks downright mean. :t

2)P51

I agree with you on both of these. And I'm sorry but the Mitchell only looks good from an,I"ll mess you up if you f@&$ with me" stand point; past that she is kinda homely.
And I'm sorry but the Spit dosen't look like a fighter unless you have flown her for a while. Hey, I calls em' as I sees em'.

Spitfire XII will always be my favorite for best looking of the Spits. Great combo of sleek and tough.

The 109E4/7 with the pointed spinner would be my 4th pick for best looking bird.

I have to agree with you on the XII. Definately my favorite-faster than a typh down low, clipped wings, and sexy looks combine to make one heck of an aircraft. :aok IX ain't far behind though.

There's an adage that "if it looks right, it is right". If there was ever an aircraft that disproved this, it would have to be the Mig 3. Gorgeous looking aircraft, but an absolute dog of a fighter.

-
bah!
you made it into 3rd page without mentioning the Mosquito. It was twice the Spitfire the Spitfire was!
There are rare occasions in history when a functional machine becomes a work of art. Unbelievably, the brits of all people pulled it off twice - once with the spitfire and then topped themselves with the Mosquito.
-
My fav planes are the following, but not in order
FW190
BF109s
Mosquitos
Tempests

What a beauty. Too bad some of the specific cues are wrong on the AH model: The intake shape (ours looks more like a D9 rather than a ~K4 shape), and the tail... The tail is supposed to have those straight lines. The tail section is a slightly rounded rectangle, not an ovoid, and is a straight profile, not a curved slope like e.g. the Mossie.
Not vaguely rounded like ours. All it would take is moving a couple of vertices around.... No change in performance budget.

She's big, she's blue, and you can't deny just how slick the gull-wings look. Especially get one that's been sitting out in the sun, is dinged, battered, and oil-streaked. I can't think of any other aircraft that just LOOKS more like a battle-hardened, grizzled Marine.

Too me the F4U-1 birdcage is the best looking corsair of the bunch.

The 109 is also a beautiful plane.
Like Corky, I think the early P38's are quite sexy
(http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff266/Radcam/lockheed-p-38-lightning-2.jpg)
For modern planes I would have to go with the F-14

My criteria for best looking plane are pretty simple. When I step out on the TARMAC, where are the HANSOME beast,
that with out a word say come and "Fly Me"!
The B-25 is beautiful and rugid.
The Warhawk is just flatout HANSOME.

I get you swareiam, I really do know what you mean. But what I'm wondering is how the spitfire looks deadly unless you know what it's packing? I mean the Jug looks just plaind mean in addition to looking powerfull and buxsom. The Mustang looks fast, sleek, and deadly, and the german planes look like real brusiers. The spit on the other hand, looks kinda docile and harmless.

I honestly think that the P-51-B is pretty nice.

WWII Fighters
P-38 - It's big, but it's sleek & powerful looking.
F4U - What's not to like about the bent wings and that HUGE prop?
FW-190 - Damn nicest looking radial engined airplane ever. It's got fabulous lines
WWII Bombers
A-26 - It's a clean looking airplane. It doesn't look bit and bulky like a normal buff.
FW-200 Condor - Looks like a cleaned up big brother of the C-47
PBY - Mostly not a bomber, but it did do some bombing. It's so ugly that it's beautiful!
Modern day

So many great looking planes in this thread.. awesome!
German planes, as someone mentioned, look sinister... deadly. Very cool.
Mossie... spit(some models).. great looking birds!
38 beautiful. A big plane that still somehow looks like it is nimble and responsive
47 also beautiful in it's unabashed display of brute force. You can almost feel the throb of that big motor just looking at a pic.
51D. Elegant and graceful lines. Like a game thoroughbred, it just looks like it's ready to leap into the sky for some walled throttle antics.
My favorite though: It's big, it's blue, it's an F4U! Somehow, at least to me, this plane pulls off the brute force of the jug while looking like it could corner on rails. And the view looking at the front, the big double wasp and the gull wings give it that sinister look on a par with the German 109 and FW radial models. Fierce!

P-38 (any). Hands down. Just something about a formation of 38's that builds enough wood to create a forest of joy(sticks). :aok

Fighter/Attack planes:
Spit IX or Spit V, the classic Spitfires.
FW190 any varient. They just look like business.
D3A. Mean looking EW attack fighter.
Bomber/Attack planes:
Lancaster. Another classic.
Boston. Mean and fast.
