Is so awesome!
Man, wake up, get a honey-butter chicken biscuit, and then play aces high.... That's great.
-
bastard, trying not to eat fast food but you had to post this. Of all the post on the forum this was the first thing i saw, thanks.

Mmmm WhataBurger... Yummy!!! :rock

They're alright. Not that great tho.

I'll take cheesecake over honey-butter chicken biscuits any day.

doublemeat whataburger is hard to beat....

For some reason this reminds me of Dick's Burgets in Seattle. And our bus full of concert choir kids screaming "I LOVE DICK'S!!"

doublemeat whataburger is hard to beat....
...unless you add bacon, double cheese, and jalapenos.
I'd say triple meat, but I eat lite. :D

as good as whatabuger is, it is NOT a Krystal & therefore will NOT improve your AH flying ability. The Krystal may be insterted whole into one's mouth without undue effect on gameplay; other than you can't use VOX for a few moments...... :lol

In-N-Out.
End of Discussion.
-
always has been one of my favorites.Just put a couple in birmingham
-
I have had In-N-Out. I like Whataburger better.
But then again, I got to eat from the first Whataburger opened and that pretty much set my preferences in motion.
My second favorite was the A&W drive ins. Frosted glass mugs full of fresh A&W root beer. And those burgers. I dunno. Maybe I am waxing nostalgic, but that was some good stuff.

Heathen.
Probably. Toss in some miscreant as well. Maybe a pinch of hoodlum. Some creton for measure and a toss of savage, and there ya go.
I still like Whataburger better. :)
I'd rather not be a sophisticated carnivore, if it means I have to give up Whataburger,...or prefer In-n-out. Shudder.
-
Having lived in both Texas and now California , I love both In n out and Whataburger , however its got to be Tommy's out here on the coast . Chili Cheese Burger is outta this world , but not good for the heart I'm sure , but you only live once . And Skuzzy is right A & W kicks the tar out of all of them as I recall don't even know if they are still around .

Whataburger can't hold a candle to That'saburger...
-
Never tried using a Whataburger as a candle holder,..so you could be right. Then again, I never thought to measure the quality of a burger by how well it held a candle. :)
-
Ok, there is blasphemy going on in this thread, and things MUST be set RIGHT.
1) In-n-Out is king.
2) In-n-Outs in Texas sucks. I don't know why, but I'm guessing the employees and the quality of their food ingredients suck out there. In-n-Out was born in So-Cal, it is where it's supply and distribution network and employee training is the strognest.
3) Have you had animal style fries at In-n-Out?
Yeah it's not on the menu, and no you're not seeign things, the best stuff at In-n-Out is not on the menu... rookies. It's fries topped with cheese, grilled onions, and a glob of secret-sauce. 4) The best stuff at In-n-Out is not on the menu... rookies. Get a 4x4 w/ grilled onions and an animal style fries and thank me later.
5) Tommy' makes a decent chili cheese burger/hotdog/fries, but I've had better... still can't beat Tommy's though for those 4am chilli-cheese fry runs though.

Somebody used to work at In-And-Out....

Real men eat a 4x4 animal style with large animal style fries.
Makes me wanna fly to LA just for thaat...

Corpus Christi, Texas.
Bablonian, are the fries so bad, you have to cover them with grilled onions? That's just nasty. If I want everything to taste like an onion, I'd eat at my mother-in-laws house.

I have a What-A-Burger 1 block from my house....

Or
Breakfast on a Bun...Sausage , Egg and Cheese with the lil hashbrowns....
or
Honey Butter chicken Busquit.... :rock

Oh, she concurs.
You know what? It really goes to different tastes. Some folks like onions all over everything and think that is just peachy and the way things are supposed to be eaten. I suppose one cannot ding another person for that.
If you like onions all over fries, you will not like Whataburger fries. Pretty straightforward.
I guess the question is, to those who have had In-n-out and Whataburger, why is it you prefer one over the other? I grew up with Whataburger, and have tried really hard to emulate them at home, without success I might add. Never been quite able to get that spice combination just right.

I love whataburger. I also love the fact that the ketchup comes in a little dip cup instead of a POS packet. Whataburger appreciates the fact that I have to hold my double double w/ jalapenos, dip my fries in ketchup, talk on my phone and drive with my knee while merging onto the highway.

This sentence really weakens your overall argument. It demonstrates that you don't have the functional knowledge of the subject matter to hold up your end. There are no In-N-Outs in Texas.
http://www.in-n-out.com/locations.asp?view=all
Born in Texas, spent many formative years in So-Cal, I prefer In-N-Out by a large margin. However, here in DFW we have Burger Street, which I feel is about the equal to In-N-Out.

NB introduced me to my 1st Whataburger at the last con ... had to admit is was quite tastly !!!
A&W !!! ... did the car hops have roller skates on ? ... our local A&W, when I was a kid, had the roller-skating car hops and your food was delivered on trays that hung off the windows. Their root beer was the best I have ever had ... bar none.

Yep, that was the A&W of old. Never met anyone who would not agree that root beer was the best stuff on the planet. Shame they closed it all down. That was good stuff!

Whataburger is my all time favorite burger joint. I usually get the No. 2 w/ grilled onions, jalapeño, cheese & all the fixins.
I too have been to the Whataburger in Corpus Christi. They have the best service. The Texas Surf Museum is near there as well as the Lexington.
Skuzz, if I come to the Con this year, we’re dragging all the foreigners (Non Texans) to a Whataburger :D

Oh, now you're just insulting innocent vegetables!
During my most epic late-night ventures to In-n-out (typically after flying some multi-hour bombing mission over Rookland, during the later half of which I run out of beer, thus enabling me to sober up in time to land and think about grabbing a burger), I get an order of regular fries and animal style fries with that 4x4. They're best consumed fresh while enjoying them plain, so I consume half of the regular order of fries on the drive home. I then utilize the remaining half to help mop up the excess cheese, grilled onions and secret sauce left over after consuming the animal style fries. It is somewhere around this time that I find myself staring down a 4x4, wishing I had instead gone with two double-doubles (one to save for breakfast tomorrow :rock ).
Edit: Onions are best eaten raw, like an apple!

Oh, she concurs.

Because Whataburger is so good....
Favorite thing to do is, 3 AM trips to Whataburger in Georgetown after fishing... And either getting 2 Honeybutter chicken biscuits, or the double meat. :rock

OK, I found more time to write and put some input on this topic today. So Cal suffers from a lack of competitive high-quality fast food chain choices.
We have In-n-Out, open 'til 2am, all their food is made from quality ingredients, with as much prep that can be done on-site being done. Then there's Tommys, open 24-7-365, but I'd rate their food at a lower quality than In-n-Out... but when it's bathed in chili and covered by a blanket of cheese, does that really matter?
Other than the almighty holy grail that is In-n-Out out here, there really isn't much else in terms of quality local (easy to go to) mega-chains. You just need to take a gander at what our staple fast food places are out here to see why we think so highly of our double-doubles with grilled onions and freshly made fries drowning in cheese, grilled onions, and secret sauce.
Is ____ (choose one below) better than In-n-Out?
Burger King
Carls Jr.
Del Taco
Jack in the Box
McDonalds
Taco Bell
Wendys
They're all almost the same in terms of quality and getting your money's worth. It is why we are so very fond of our In-n-Outs.
Now ,there's some very good non-mega-chain and independent cafes, diners, and other various restaurants open until 2-am or are 24-hours out here (there's nothing like a 3am thai-food craving and hoofing it over the hill to Thai Town for some KILLER thai food), but how convenient they are for a late-night munchie-attack is all dependent on where you live and if you want to go and sit somewhere to eat. The closest late-night cafe worth my money is a 25-minute freeway drive from where I live (late-night, no traffic... but I think in a couple months they're opening one up that's only a 10-minute drive), but my favorite one is just another minute further down the road (mmm Corals in Burbank).
In closing, the fast food chains that are good enough to consider spending your money at are few and far between out here. But there is plenty of good food to be had out here for your money at any time of the day or night if you know where to go to.
I'm thinking Hawaiian BBQ today for lunch today. :D What about you guys/gals?
-
There's a new (Well, it opened like 3 months ago...) place called Freddy's Frozen Custard...
Since I can't get an In-N-Out 4x4 because I'm in Texas (Whhhyyy????!!!) I have to settle on Freddy's 4-patty Steak burger....
<drool>

I am going to have to bust into a WB soon cause all this. :furious
Is diarrhea better than?
Burger King -Yes
Carls Jr. - Yes
Del Taco -Yes, and the diarrhea you get here is worse than reg. diarrhea
Jack in the Box - Yes
McDonald's - Hell yes.
Taco Bell - Yes, see Del Taco
Wendy's - Yes
I'm not against all Tex Mex Fast food. I'll chow on some Taco Bueno. But they can be hit and miss.

Whataburger is good in florida (though their fries leaves much to be desired!). Big and tasty. In fact it reminds me of burger king about 3 years ago when they had the absolute best burgers (they cheapened and lowered the quality now :( ).
But, for 'fast' food here in my town the best place is not a burger joint but a mongolian bbq place.
There is no drive through but its damn fast.
Their system is unique too. They only have three choices for you: 1 bowl, unlimited or bowl+soup.
1 bowl .. they give you one bowl and you head to the buffet style area (more on this later)
unlimited..they give you a different colored bowl and as the name says it, its all you can eat.
bowl+soup is 1 bowl with unlimited soup...so they give you 1 bowl and the smaller soup bowl.
When you have your bowl, you go to the buffet area. They have it in five sections: Meats, Veggies, Pasta and the Salad&soup area on the side. The fifth section is the SAUCES section.
You just go to each area and fill your bowl with the RAW meat/veggies/pasta they have there. Then you go to the Sauce section and fill up as many little cups of sauce you want (ranging from sweet to spicy, teriyaki, etc..you name it they got it).
You take your bowl+sauces to the main grill area. They have a HUGE circular grill where they have 3 staff members that come in ,take your bowl and sauce, cook it in front of you (takes less than 2 minutes) and give you a clean bowl matching your bowl color with your food in it.
If you want to take it home you tell the guy and they pack it in large chinese-food-style boxes.
Its delicious and when I go to pick up food to take home it takes me less than 5 minutes from the time i park my car outside to the time i get back in the car with my food. Its even faster than many fast food joint drive throughs here. cheaper and more food than them too!.
mmmm :)

Having lived in California for 4 years and Texas for a lot longer, I would have to say that In-n-Out is by far the better fast food burger than Whataburger. The one and not insignificant advantage that Whataburger has is the jalapenos. Now it's been a long time since I've had an In-n-Out burger, so it's possible that their quality has slid since then but I've never heard that.

If there's one thing I'm jealous of Texas for, it's the sheer amount (and quality) of American BBQ. I have yet to find a contender or anything that comes close within LA County lines.

Oh yeah, we got Mongolian BBQ here too, and lots of them. Best thing is they charge per bowl you create. When I was a teenager me and my friends would joke "do you know how to pack your bowl" when we would go to one. Of course it was a bad joke, but we seriously had a system down. You take a napkin and with the palm of your hand, pack down the meat and other goodies you fill your bowl with as hard and dense as you can (before they cook the stuff up). You know you did it right by two indicators: 1) the look on the chefs face when he dumps the contents of your single bowl onto the grill, spreads it out, and it takes up 1/4-1/2 of the grill and 2) when your one little precooked bowl would result in two styrofoam to-go boxes filled with the cooked results.

There is a believer amongst the heathens! Hallelujah!
As I said, the food quality is still good and tasty here in California, and In-n-Out is well loved and liked out here ever since it opened its doors. The reports from Texas of it being otherwise is disturbing and concerning to me though. If anyone from Texas comes out here to Cali and has a chance to hit up an In-n-Out, please do. I'd love to hear your comparison.

I thought that's only if you're entering Oklahoma from Texas.

Babalonian is correct , we have lots of quality food choices out here on the west coast , and as for BBQ Texas is the spot . Mexican food is an even split , I have found it good thru all four border states. But I do miss Razoo's in the DFW area it is the bomb and for cajun style it does the trick . Taco Bueno is good or I thought so anyway .

Whataburger is good, don't get me wrong....
But In-N-Out is the Holy Grail of fast food...
(I'm from Texas, was in Cali 2 years as USMC and I ate more In-N-Out during my time in Cali than I ever ate Whataburger back home)
A 4x4 is heaven on hamburger buns...

To each his own.

My brother has been to cali a few times in the last year and didn't get what was so great about In-N-Out. He does however put Five Guys in front of Whataburger.
-
I have a theory.
Those that prefer mayonnaise on their burger like In-n-out better. Those that prefer mustard on their burger like Whataburger better.
Just a wild guess.
I tried Five Guys, and was not impressed with it. Too greasy and the meat tasted like plain ole hamburger.

doublemeat whataburger is hard to beat....
Well depending on where you live, In-N-Out Burger makes whataburger look like Mikky D's. The double double animal style is about as good as a hamburger gets from a fast food chain.

The "secret sauce (mayonnaise + thousand island dressing)" on/in the In-n-outs is about as Mickey D's as it gets, if you want to go that route. Oh wait, the secret sauce is the same thing between In-n-out and Mickey D's.
I have wondered why a good burger would need a gimmicky cover-up in order to make it good. I blame the Mickey-D's generation for that one.
Now, I'll say it again. To each his own.
Whataburger does use some spices on the patties. They are pretty much like any standard beef rub, although I have yet to make an exact copy of them. Getting close.
I just think putting any type of mayo or mayo-based spread on a burger is blasphemy.

Everyone at Whataburger on I-10 in Baytown knows me by my first name. :aok

There is no gimmick regarding secret sauce as far as in-n-out burger goes. The term "secret sauce" was a Jack in the box term used in the early 70's. In-N-Out's gimmick is that everything is fresh, no freezers , microwaves. The fries are hand sliced from potatoes daily , not purchased potato puree formed into a fry. All lettuce is hand leafed and tomatoes and onions sliced daily. They do put thousand island on their burgers if you want and they will grill your onions on demand (thousand island and grilled onions is called animal style). You can also order extra patties,.
In-n-Out is a family owned business, there are no franchises to be bought. The people that work there are generally there for keeps. In-n-Out pays their employees very well considering their a burger joint and also provide health care for every employee. I believe a store manager makes somewhere in the 60,000-70,000 range.
You will not find rude, unkept, or kids filling a Summer job working at In-n-Out either. Every person that I have come across working there seem to have their life together. Generally In-n-Out's have 2 drive throughs as well as walk up ordering. I have also never been to a In-n-out that doesn't have both drive ups backed up down the street and the walk up billing out the door and this is true even at midnight. I have eaten a Whataburger in Arizona and though it's a decent burger however it's still the same old burger chain with kids taking orders and cooking with dirty bathrooms. In-n-Out is a spotless place, white and red tile everywhere. There is always 2 people on trash duty so you will never see trash on the ground of tables or a trash can over loaded. I guess what I am trying to say is that In-n-out is a very well oiled machine that offers the public with extreemly fresh burgers and fries in a fast and efficent manner in a place that is clean second to non.

I do not think anyone has said In-n-outs are bad burgers. I have tried them. They are decent. I made the mistake of letting them put the sauce on them (everyone kept telling me to the the "animal"), which definitely tainted my experiences with them.
I prefer Whataburger over them. You want mayo, you have to ask for it. Mustard is the default condiment, as it should be.
A lady at the Whatburger I go to does not wait for me to get to the head of the line before placing my order for me. I notice she does that with regulars.
Whataburgers (http://www.whataburger.com/our_story.php) are also family owned, not a franchise.
-
I understand what your saying about tastes regarding hamburgers. Tastes are different from state to state in regards to all food not just hamburgers. I think other then Mickey D's I can't think of one burger chain that even puts mustard on hamburgers here in California. Some just put catsup and some just mayonnaise and others the combo and still others with thousand island only. There is another burger chain here that I like the burgers at and that's Fatburger. I think Fatburger has mustard and catsup along with relish on their burgers, so I guess that's 2 that I know of that use mustard on their hambergers.
Does Whataburger have their own delivery trucks or mobile hamburgers trucks? You can have In-n-out cater an outdoor event if you would like. They have big trucks with a kitchen incorperated with it that have fountain drink stations and the works.
-
My upbringing taught me catsup/ketchup is wrong to put on a burger. Dad's comment would have been, "Is it that bad you have to cover it up?".
As far as I know Whataburger does not cater. I am 100% certain they do not have any custom trucks with a kitchen in them.
I agree that different areas of the country all have their own idea of what a burger should have on it. From that basis derives a number of opinions on what is best. None of the opinions are wrong, as far as I am concerned. It is interesting to see what people think is best though.
-
When I was a little kid and enjoyed the sticky wall crawler toy in a happy meal more than the meal itself, I used to wonder what the heck a Waterburger was. Sounded gross to me.
I don't know when the Eureka moment came for me that it was What a Burger. Maybe it was when my shortbus passed by one on the way to school. :D
At that age I also was grossed out that a Braum's would sell a burger. Did it have ice creamon it? yuk. Then after a swim practice I ate one, and i gotta admit. It was guuud. Braum's burgers aint bad.
It's funny how a kids mind works.

Yep, that was the A&W of old. Never met anyone who would not agree that root beer was the best stuff on the planet. Shame they closed it all down. That was good stuff!
Still have 2 A&W's locally, still owned by the same people who owned the original two (Roller Skates Mandatory), rootbeer never changes, hamburgers have a little, but still great.
Skuzzy, if you come to Reno for the Air Races in September, I would be pleased to buy you a mug....Oh, wait, I forgot, you don't accept food from strangers (followed by how strange you thought I was) :rofl
-
You have drive-in A&W's in Reno? Well, that just gave me reason to drop by Reno next time I am in Vegas then.
-
A&W's, but not drive in's. Offer still stands. One a few blocks from the airport, one in Sparks. Phil and Paula Glover own them.
I would think having the opportunity to meet me would be reason enough for a visit. :rofl
They also do the vendor thing at the air races.
September.
Bring shorts, t shirts, snow boots and a parka. Have worn all throughout the years.

If they come with 'mayonnaise' they are bad burgers! :D
hmmm, hmmm...
"Jimmy: I'm gonna keep the coke and the fries but I'm gonna send this burger back. And if you put any mayonnaise on it, I'm gonna come over to your house, I'll chop your legs off, set fire to your house, and watch as you drag your bloody stumps out the door. "
"Jimmy: Every red-blooded American knows that the only condiment that you are ever supposed to put on a hamburger is KETCHUP! Or MAYBE some of that SPECIAL SAUCE you like so much here in Canada; which I think has a little bit of mayonnaise in it too! But I swear to God when they start slapping that mayonnaise on there I could kill somebody. "

:rofl :aok
-
Arkansas has a Whattaburger---I know folks who will drive 2 hours just to get one.\
I'll have to settle for Sonic---Northern states--eat your hearts out.
-
HB, we have a few of the A&W restaurants, but the food and drinks are nowhere near what the old drive-ins used to be.

Sonic has the best breakfast burritos I've ever tasted!
BUT, whataburger has the best breakfasts. :D

I have been to that A&W and the Sonic burger in Reno. I have been attending the Reno Air Races every year for over 15 years as a vendor, stop by the booth, I'll buy you a beer. . Yes Scuzzy I'll by you one as well if you attend the races even after banning me from the forums countless times. I'll buy you a rule #4 beer, their the best. Serious if you have never been to the Reno air races it's a must see. I'm kinda surprised that AH doesn't have a booth with computers set up for future customers, playstation has been there as well as a couple of companies that manufacture gaming sets for flight sim games.
P.S if your really into A$W they have a booth there as well.
-
The whataburger food quality and service, got so bad here in Kingman, AZ that no one would eat their anymore ....... So corporate shut doors .
A&W rootbeer stands were the best when I was a kid ....
-
That sucks, ever whataburger I go to in Texas always have the same taste and good service. I didn't even know they had any out of state.
We had an A&W about 1/4 mile from our house and we couldn't wait to go when it opened, huge let down. Didn't taste anything like the ones we went to up north, closed maybe a year later.
-
Ok... gonna take you back a-ways... but I remember the ENTIRE Whataburger song back from when Mel Tillis used to do their commercials:
WHAAAT-a-burger...
Whataburger...
Just What a Burger Should Be!
The Unbeatable...
Unbelievable...
Bigger, Better Burger Whataburger!
Unfortunately... I cant find the actual song anywhere online. But, I did find this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGLcNR1sWIc
Yeah... I grew up in Oklahoma... so I KNOW Whataburger from when I was a little kid, and even a drunken college student going to Whataburger at 2am after the bars closed.
Its not just a HAMburger... Its a WHATABurger!
-
To each his own.
Heathen :D
So, what would In-N-Out make Mikky D's look like? Dog food?
Well... yes... though Jack in the Box's parent company is the same one for Purena dog foods. :noid
<snip>blasphemy</snip>
Whataburger does use some spices on the patties. They are pretty much like any standard beef rub, although I have yet to make an exact copy of them. Getting close.
<snip>ranting of a non-believer</snip>
Hmm, they spice up their patties... ok, you've peaked my curiosity now. If there's one thing I got against almost all fast food hamburger joints is that their meat patties are as plain as you can get. It's jsut one of those basic things that makes home-made BBQed hamburgers the best of them all (now, lets see who disagrees with that statement).
Also, In-n-Out has been family owned and managed since it was openend (my uncle went to school with one of the original generation's sons, and also got his first job working at an In-n-Out). They still agressively hold their seats of power against all comers. They say it's so that they maintain direct quality control of their product and employee training.

<sorry. Fat Fingers>

BigPlay,
Yuppers, Paula is usually running the A & W show at the races.
As far as vendors, Air Warrior came one year as well.
A free beer you say? PM me, or post the information I need to find you. If I sampled 1 at every beer vendor out there, I'd never find anything but a ride to jail, and I look forward to seeing you.

Wife wanted to eat Whataburger last night, so I had the Triple burger.....
Long story short, guess who woke up an hour ago vomiting?
<--- This guy... :frown:
-
Have you ever tried to eat a pound of Beluga caviar? My guess is, you would suffer the same thing.

Oh, so you never have had a Whataburger? Yes, they use a proprietary blend of spices on thier patties. I am still trying to duplicate those spices at home. I am close, but missing something.

From eating 1 burger?
Puh-Leeze.
Anyway, after puking a few times and whining at my wife (She laughed at me the whole time...) I've come to the conclusion that you, Skuzzy, did this to me with your evil black magic....
Yup.

sure do miss the ol A&w.That frosty mug was so good.

might be MSG, try adding that . :lol

No MSG.
It might be garlic, but it is subtle, whatever it is I am missing.

Lay it on him, DJ.
Skuzzy has those broad shouders from so many years of this type of blame. j/k :D
Evil Black Magic.... I love it :salute

Thanks RATTFINK for putting that song in my head now.

When you have hollow legs and grew up in a city that only had McDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King, and Sonic, you think any burger not rfrom the afore mention places is delicious. I like my burgers with mayo and mustard. The closest thing we have around here to a Whataburger/In n Out is called Chubbys. The Jr. burger is as round as a CD, and you can order whatever you want on it. Chili, cheese, onions, eggs, fries, you name it. Plus they have REAL malts, just like what you old timers had at the soda fountain at the turn of the century. Unfortunatly, Chubby's in downtown, and I live up north, and I have yet to try out Nick & Jake's. You people are so lucky.

LOL!!!!!!! Someone got the cheesy reference from a wannabe singer lmao!!!!!!!

Being born and raised in So. Cal and moving to Texas in my twenties, I'm still partial to In & Out over Whataburger. The mustard and the bun are the reason. Not a big fan of mustard and the buns that In & Out use go along with what I think a burger bun should be (they become a sticky mess near the end of the burger from soaking up all the juices of the vegetables and burger). That being said, a local buddy turned me onto MooYah Burgers (http://www.mooyah.com/the-story/). You order the burger with just what you want on it. Good tasting burgers and In & Out style buns, fresh cut fries (and goobs of them) with simple fry seasoning.
Besides the basic burger though, Whataburger tops In & Out for the simple reason of the 2 sausage taquitos w/salsa, a med fry and large soda at 3 in the morning after a night of partying. That's heaven!

Raptor,
You ought to check out: http://www.burgerstreet.com/

Been to both the Euless and Addison locations a few times. Not bad but I prefer the MooYah now....
Now that I'm thinking more about burgers (I'm hungry!!) Kincaid's out in Fort Worth was a great place but I think it has since shut down. We tried the Southlake location a week or two after it opened but they had not figured things out there yet. Burnt burgers, greasy fries (not the good way).
A buddy sent this to me... this may be my next road trip Heart Attack Grill (http://www.webegeek.net/video/heartattackgrill.html)

Very good idea, I will check out the Little Elm location as soon as I get a job lol.
