Guys,
I'm going on a Royal Carribbean cruise on the 9th of July for 9 days. If I order my laptop tonight it should be here before then, but I was wondering if I should just wait on the ordering of it and what not. Is it safe to bring a laptop on board without it getting stolen? Studio 15 laptop, so it's not all that small. I believe I'm on the Explorer of the Seas if that helps.

hey spikes, im typing to you on my studio laptop :)
I got my laptop in about 5 buisness days (im in houston)
and as for it being safe on the ship I can safely say AS long as its inside of your room or your with it at all times outside of the room it should not get stolen.
-
You should be safe in ordering it now.

Right now I'm on a Studio 17 that my dad was working on.
I've looked up some cruise line educate and stuff like that, security. I doubt I'll be carrying it with me everywhere I go, so I'll probably just leave it in my room or bring it out on the deck, etc. The Studio 15 and 17 also say they feature a security lock thing that you can put a cbale through...where the heck is it? I want to order it now...Flipper...also...Was that 5 Biz days when you ordered it or once it shipped?
-
I took mine.
We were on Freedom of the Seas. Much more fun than I expected to have. :aok

Did you run into any problems having it onboard? My main concern would be the maids that clean the rooms...but I'm sure tucking it away would be good enough...also how big is the laptop you have? If I had my netbook I'd take that but I won't be getting that until after I get back.

placed the order on May 30 got the laptop June 5th
As you commented about the maids, just think of it this way...if they would steal it...where would they run?
I had my other laptop with me along with my moms cannon camera and we just left them in the suitcases...7 day cruise no problems with us.

Took me about 5 days to get my 15" studio from the day i ordered and mine had to go through customs from Ireland. I bet american dells are made in america.

First cruise? Leave it along with the cell phone at home. Get a go phone for emergencies and leave the electronic leashes behind man. There's so much to do that when you get back to the room you'll wonder why you brought it. Especially if you are going to the islands. Even sitting on a deck chair watching the waves beats looking at a pc screen especially while drinking smoothies. The cabin maids won't really mess with it most likely though. Just food for thouht. Have fun on your trip either way! Cruises are awsome.

You've got a point...I think I'll order it today and leave it home...that way before the cruise I can see if it works and whatnot, and if it doesn't I can send it back.

AMEN.
When my wife and I went on our honeymoon http://www.psvresort.com/ (http://www.psvresort.com/) we brought the laptop, but that was it. Cell phones got buried at the bottom of the suitcase for an emergency.
Since we own a DJ business, all of our music is on the laptop(s). Once on the island, I set up a playlist, put the speakers on a shelf, closed the laptop (after setting it to do nothing when the lid was closed) and covered the damn thing with a towel. Basically, it spent 5 days being a very expensive jukebox.
If you can't find something to do aboard ship to entertain you and occupy your time w/o needing the computer, then you don't need a vacation that badly, yet. :D

Spikes,
Just an FYI, if it does get stolen your homeowners insurance will cover the cost to replace it ( less your policy deductible ) On most homeowner policies a persons "personal property" is covered no matter where it or you are. Personal property is covered for 16 named perils, of which theft is one. This goes for the policy holders children also. Im a property adjuster and see this all the time. Ive paid for quite a few laptops that were stolen out of dorm rooms.

I agree. I took cruise on that very ship, took the laptop and didn't use it much because there was so much to do and so little time. If you start with internet withdrawals you can visit their computer room and get online from there. If you're taking a camera and are afraid you'll fill the memory card so you want the computer store the picture files that also is not a problem because on board they have a place that will take your memory card and burn a CD for you. Leave the 'puter at home, take the camera, shoot lots of pictures and post them here (especially the picts of babes in bikinis!). Have a great time.

Like most things internet use is something extra you have to pay for...to be honest, although I brought mine I hardly touched it....it is a little Sony Vio. No worries about it being stolen or anything.

Yeah you guys pretty much made my decision..I'll leave it home.
Wayout...I'd assume computers cost money to hop online..how much is it? Just for you I'll snap a bunch of teh babes :)

Yeah I figured it was pay for internet. Now that I've talked to people it seems it wouldn't get stolen or anything, but I won't even take the chance at all and just not bring it.

Keep in mind there's 24 hours of food. Weigh yourself before and after the trip. Keep an eye on what you are charging to your stateroom. You take your card to the registrar desk and let them know what room you have. Then you go to the pool deck and start with a bahama mamma. One leads to 10 pretty quick over time. Eat on the boat and sleep on the boat. No need to get a hotel room if the ship is right there while visiting an sland overnight if you are. Watch what you drink in the different places you are going. Bottled only is a good rule. No need to have the trip end at the bathroom. Packing, keep it simple. Bathing suit, flipflops, a set of nice clothes for picture night, t-shirts and shorts. Oh!!!! everything at the ships stores can be charged to your room usually as well. This means the watches and jewelery that look good in the glass case under lights. Beginning of the cruise everything is kind of expensive in there. Towards the end prices drop a bit. There's usually a crewman who works on the ship who wants to make money for HIS portcall. He will pull out his 12 gauge and offer skeet shooting off the stern for a couple bucks a round. That pays for some fun for his day off on one of the islands during the cruise. It's not a scam, he just wants to get some beer money together to party with his shipmates. Above all else normal rules of gut feeling apply when at the different places you go. Everywhere has a bad neighborhood no matter the country or color the water is be careful and but have a blast. the pictures with the captain are worth keeping later on. Especially for the first timer cruisy.

That is so cool that I can get money if my children befall one of the 16 perils!
