Two days ago I fired up my machine and when I opened Firefox it would only display blank pages. It would load but when it was done it would just display a blank page. I opened Explorer and it did the same thing! I tried and tried to get it running to no avail. I did a system restore to the middle of last month. Then Explorer would only open in safe mode with no add-ons. I was able to get to windows update and reinstall explorer but when I went to install Firefox the download kept getting interrupted! I went to add/remove programs to completely un-install Firefox and although it showed up in the list of programs I couldn't un-install it! Now, today, Explorer is doing the same thing! I tried the restore trick but this time it didn't work! Now, I have no internet access from my desktop (using my daughter's netbook to type this). Everything else works great, It's just web browsers that I'm having a problem with.
WHAT THE HELL AM I GOING TO DO!!!

By a porn mag to replace your online porn addiction, at least until you get your browser fixed. :D

just a quick test slug..
if you go to start->run and type 'CMD'
does it open the black dos command screen or does it not?
if it does then ignore this. if it doesnt then you got a virus thats real pissy to get rid of.

Same problem kind of. Since the last windows "update" yesterday. IE and Firefox will not connect to the Internet. Seems to be timing out. I figured it was my dying computer in general but I used to reset the modem and router and it would fix it.
Opera still works.
And, CMD does give me the dos command screen.
Guess I'll try to system restore again. Didn't work last time I tried.

Sounds like a virus.
Might want to clean your PC.

Go back a few restore points. The last 1 or 2 might have the bug in with them. You need a good av to start with.

Many viruses, if they choose to infect a restore point, they will infect ALL restore points.

I completely unistalled IE, did a restore to the middle of last month, then installed FF from a jump drive. So far, so good...

I'd love to do that too. I wanted to do that a month or two ago. I've been looking for my OS disk that long.
Won't restore at all. Norton won't connect to check for update.
Started after rebooting after the last windows update.

Well, FF wanted to do a security update, which I allowed, and now I'm right back where I started. The page loads but will not display. None of the other puters I work on are having problems. I can't beieve I picked up a virus (though not out of the question). Google earth will not work either...

Firefox wanted to perform a security update?!
Since when did Firefox perform security updates?
Get yourself the free trial of NOD32 antivirus (http://www.eset.com/download/free_trial_download_eav.php). You will also want to use the following utilities to try to sniff out and remove your bug:
Ad-Aware Free (http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php)
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button)
Spybot Search & Destroy (http://download.cnet.com/Spybot-Search-amp-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html?tag=mncol)
AVG Anti-Rootkit Free (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AVG-Anti-Rootkit.shtml)
Only scan using one utility at a time.

Since when did Firefox perform security updates?
Umm since it went public? My Firefox autoupdates itself regularly.

I know about Firefox updating itself. But I don't know about Firefox asking to perform a security update. That just sounds fishy.
