Title: does anyone know about this plane?
Post by: mrfish on January 12, 2001, 10:46:00 AM
i came across this plane in my readings, but there isn't much about it

The FW-187

i understand it was a very limited late war plane but might make an interesting perk??? - would be nice to have a decent agessive tank busting twin (other than the p38) besides just looks cool  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Fw-187 Falke (Falcon). It out-performed the Bf-109B and 109C easily, and Bf-110 crews thought it was magic. RLM didn't think so highly of it and it was dropped from consideration. Armament was 4x 7.92mm MG-17 and 2x MG 151/20 cannons. Ammo load I don't know. Rumor (urban legend?) has it that some defended the Focke-Wulf factory. I don't know, and info about it is scarce. Most of the above details I picked up from a half-dozen sites with very limited info.

heh westy hope some day they model both and we'll do a head-to-head and find out (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) .....thanks for the info all....yeah i had a picture and little paragraph about this bird in a LW book i had and found a few sites but they all say the same: limited run, used in protecting FW factory at bremmen, few went to norway...

i was hoping there was more but it is just a 'one off'  and i dont think the situation let them build very many - oh well, once the big stars are out of they way and they are searchin for obscure planes to perk i will start my marketing campaign for the falke - 1.10 maybe??

The FW-187 was one of the firsts designs where Kurt Tank was the main designer. It was designed to carry two DB600 engines, but lack of them forced Tank to fit it with much less powerful engines.

This plane with 2 700hp engines did really perform very good compared with both Bf109E and Me110C, both of them with DB601 engines (1200 hp aprox). Go figure how it would have performed with the engines it was designed to carry.

The RLM (much to Milch's displeasure) was very happy with the Me110 and Bf109. The Fw187 was never given clearance for production, the RLM wanted the 110 and future 210.

Another stupid decision by the German burocracy...imagine this same plane with DB605D engines!! (DROOL)

[edit] BTW it was an early war plane, and indeed the Fw187 A-0s actually built were kept for factory protecting duties. Some may have seen actual combat but I'm not sure of that.

Scanner still not working  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif) if not I'd post here the info I have on this amazing plane

[edit again]

Checking my sources, I found out that the Fw187V6 actually received two DB600 engines, rated at 1000hp each. THe friggin plane achieved 396mph at level flight.

That was in 14-May-1938. SO, excuse me...but the Mosquito and Beaufighters WERE 187 wanabees     (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

BTW this plane actually saw combat service, with 13/Jg77 in 1940 (norway). It then served in Bremen for factory protection duties on the FW factory there. Finally they were adapted (and used) for night fighting.

So, saw real combat    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) for an early war planeset...would be nice!!!!

It looks VERY similar to the Westland Whirlwind.

2 Peregrines at 800hp
4 Hispano 20mm cannon with 60rpg.
Max speed of 370

It served in 1940 during the Battle of Britain.

Would have been fun to see how it would have done with Merlins instead of Peregrines.

It would be interesting to do a Whirlwind vs. Fw187 fight.
