I am just about 72 hours away from surgery right now. I've been waiting and anticipating it for about 4 months. :O Last February I had a biopsy done due to a minor change in my PSA blood test and some symptoms of prostate issues. The biopsy came back positive and the doc called me to pass the news while we were on the road to go see grand kids. The doc says it's very early and the surgery should take care of the entire situation, but until he gets inside and stomps around a bit he won't know for sure.
For those who have a family history of cancer (my Mothers side of the family) and especially if there is ANY history of prostate cancer, go get checked. This includes men who are as young as 35. Get a PSA blood test annually and the physical check done. If you are over 50 this should be a routine matter. The incidence of prostate cancer is higher than breast cancer in women yet few folks really hear about it. Certainly nothing like the information we are bombarded with about breast cancer. Not that I am complaining about the breast cancer issue as my Mother and Wife both had it. My wife has been clear for over 10 years now.
Guys, go get checked. It's not difficult and it can save your life. This is an easy cancer to miss and ignore. Don't do that. It's also easy to cure completely if caught early.

If you had seen what my father went thru with prostate cancer before he passed away, you'd be glad for just a "finger up the fundament".
Think along the lines of multiple major surgeries, castration, bladder removed, internal plumbing re-routed to pee out your side into a bag, permanent, everlasting ED, etc.
In light of all that, a finger up the rear once a year is a small price to pay for early detection and prevention, I'd think. I don't like it at all either, but I gladly go thru it to prevent going thru what my father did.
Maverick, best of luck to you and I hope your surgery goes well!

Best to ya Mav.

Quoted for the truth it contains.
The rectal exam is over and done with in less than 10 seconds. If you can't man up to that little discomfort how the heck do you think you'll tolerate the surgery, chemo, radiation and loss of other life functions like simple little bladder control? The rectal exam is less painful than a simple flu shot and unlike a shot, goes away right away.
If you need to do so, have a little humor about it. Bring a couple candles a flower and a champagne glass when you go for your physical. Tell the doc you are now engaged when he she's done. Sing moon river when they tell you to bend over. Have a laugh about it.
This is not a big deal to go through guys, get over the infantile fear that no news is good news and that your butt is sacred territory. You won't like the consequences if you insist on remaining a "virgin" and get the cancer. The disease is far worse than the exam, trust me on this. Oh and BTW a colonoscopy goes through the same route and those are normal procedures once you hit the half century mark. They will even give you pictures of your insides to take home and put on the wall after they are done. Colon cancer is also another major cause of death. Cancer is far far more inconvenient and uncomfortable than the exams.

I just opened the bag that had the latest prescription package. It is one of "those" jugs with the special powder in it. You know the one you drink to empty out all the plumbing before the colonoscopy. Them bastages didn't even put in the frikken flavor packs on this one. I mean the flavor packs really don't cover all the taste but they DO help . Friken bastages!!!!!!!!!!! :furious
I gotta drink 3/4 of it starting at 3:00 PM local time. Oh boy, only 2 hours to go. I can hardly wait....... :cry

Good Luck Mav! Praying for ya.

My mother was 47 when she almost died of Diverticulosis (1990). Four months before my son was born, I had appendicitis (May 2001) and had a colonoscopy not just because of the Appendectomy. But also because that Dr. knows my family's history of Colon Cancer.
Now fast forward to today. On Monday I'll be meeting with the Urologist about having a Vasectomy.
-
Sorry to hear it Mav, hope that it all works out well for you.

I just got back the results of my prostate biopsy last Friday. They showed cancerous tissue. I had it checked because of an annual PSA and DRE. PSA went up 2 points in 6 months so the doctor did the biopsy. The ultrasound they do along with the biopsy showed nothing. I had a CT scan and bone scan yesterday and am meeting the doctor tomorrow to see what my options are. I just turned 58 last week. It looks like he's going to recommend prostate removal. Hopefully we caught it before it had a chance to spread. My grandfather wasn't so fortunate. His had spread before they found it 37 years ago. He's been gone for 36 years now.
Good luck Maverick.

Karaya, have you and your wife looked into Implanon?
It's a stick (similar size to a regular match-stick) that releases hormones over a 3 year period.
It's one of the most effective birth-control methods out there.... is not affected by dietary or digestive changes and isn't affected by most medications (obviously....check that with your doc, though).
The stick is replaced once every three years and just involves a big needle that injects the stick under the skin (in the inner upper-arm area). I believe it's always done with a local anesthetic anyway, so it's not a big deal.
Compared to a vasectomy, it's a much less permanent option with, if I am not mistaken, the same sort of protection (99.9% or something).
There are side effects, like irregular bleeding or frequent spotting, plus most of the other side-effects of the contraceptive pill.... but these certainly don't appear in every person and should they prove to a problem, your wife can just have it out and that's the end of it.
Look into it, mate, the missus and I use that as our sole method of contraception and have done for about a year now (maybe longer than a year). It has been great.
Might be worth a look before going the ol' snip snip?
I'm not a doctor but my missus is a nurse in a women's health clinic and we researched the issue thoroughly. We're young, want sex but are not in a financial position to start a family yet (both still studying). Implanon = all the sex we want, no other forms of protection, no pill to remember every day and most of all, the safest non-permanent method out there.

Hey Band,
Later on if you want to ask questions about the surgery and what it's like afterwards feel free. Scary damn situation isn't it? Now my surgery is less than 10 hours away. :O I hope they got some real good drugs for me......

The big "V" was one of the best moves I could have made .. did it about 10 years ago (40 at the time).
It allowed the wife to get off the pill as the hormones were making her (and I ) crazy. Much better now.
Got the blood work results yesterday - PSA normal.
Got scoped about 4 years ago - it was a piece of cake - great drugs - the pain was the pile of pills they made me take to clean out my system - boy did they work. I heard the jug is worse than the pills.
Good luck Mav - best of luck Band

Good luck Maverick - we'll be praying for a good outcome! Let us know when you get back.

GL Mav.
On the brink of 35 here (this Friday).
Started getting the checks, early. Grandfather had problems, so I figured why wait if it can be found early.
I only had one thing that I told the doc after he put on the latex gloves..............
"There had better be only ONE hand on my shoulder when you do what you are about to do!"

I'm back "home" now in our RV. I can't stay at the computer chair very long but otherwise getting better. Little pain but kind of uncomfortable due to a couple hoses sticking out of me. One will be there for a couple weeks. It's a catheter and kind of sensitive. The other drain at the surgical site will come out Monday. It's just awkward to deal with.
I'll write more wen it's more comfy to sit at the computer. The staples at the incision just itch like mad when I sit up in the chair. Reclining is more comfy..
-
Good to hear. Heal up and we talk at ya soon.
:aok,

Put Nancy back on.....just kidding, glad to hear you are doing alright. :aok

Best of luck and prayers sent.
For all those bothered by the rectal exam just make sure the doc does not have both of his hands on your shoulders and you will be fine.

:salute MAV wtg sir.......WTG :aok

Get well soon mate.

Just got back from the doc's office. The drain is out so one thing hanging off of me is gone. I won't miss that little bastage. The pathology report is in too. There was more cancer in the prostate than anticipated as it was on both sides. It was fully encapsulated so there was no spread. I should be fully cured at this time. No chemo or radiation needed. That's a load off of my mind there. Next Tuesday the 29th the catheter and I believe staples all come out. :x
Right now I have so many staples in me that I'd drive the airport metal detector to drink. :D
